Those unfamiliar with fado--that exquisitely mournful strain of balladry that is to Portugal what tango is to Argentina and flamenco is to Spain--will probably want to acquaint themselves more intimately with the genre after hearing Mariza's gorgeous album Fado Curvo. Following up on her 2001 debut, Fado em Mim, which catapulted the young singer from Lisbon to a pinnacle of worldwide critical and popular acclaim, Fado Curvo will delight fado aficionados and novices alike. The album showcases Mariza's startling vocal agility—almost operatic in its power and range on songs like "O Silencio de Guitarra" and "Calaleiro Monge," and yet playful on the title song and starkly expressive on "Retrato." The music, like Mariza's debut, is gorgeous-the chiming 12-string Portuguese guitar and acoustic guitar are enough to transport the listener to a smoke-filled Lisbon tavern. But the real joy of Fado Curvo is that it's a more personal and distinctive album than its predecessor. The production, this time by Carlos Maria Trindade, breathes more organically, with surprising touches like the muted trumpet on "O Deserto" and the stark cello and piano accompaniment of "Retrato." Meanwhile, Mariza herself, singing a collection of beautiful Portuguese poetry, sounds even more as if she is baring her own soul on songs like "Vielas de Alfama" and "Primavera," making this forward-thinking album both an excellent document of modern fado and a sign that bodes well for the world's next great fadista.

Madredeus have an intuitive style that is both very folky and yet highly adventurous. The simplicity of the Portuguese ensemble's studio recordings belies the complexity of the arrangements, which are full of subtle twists and turns on classic folk styles and surprising harmonic beauty. This two-CD set was recorded live in April 1998 and gives the band the best possible platform for what it does. Much of the program is centered around the superb voice of Teresa Salgueiro and songs written by the ensemble's other members. With two acoustic guitars, an upright bass, and a synthesizer, they performed a set of songs that received no remixing or rerecording, a rarity these days for so-called live albums. The interplay between the musicians and singer is never better felt than in this live setting. The CD is lush in tone yet sublimely bare in presentation.

Joana Amendoeira (1982) is one of the youngest female singers in nowadays fados' circuit. At the age of twelve she had already participated at Lisbon's Grande Noite do Fado Amador, the most popular contest of amateur singers in the country, where she was highly acclaimed by the present press critics. In 1995 she competed again in the same event, that time in Oporto, where she obtained the first place in the women's voice category. A new "fadista" was born.
Invitations from in and outside the country began to pour in and since then Joana has been performed all over Europe, South America and Japan. After two albums, respectively Olhos garotos (1998) and Aquela rua (2000) her fame was definitively established.
She's also a resident singer in an famous fado house in Lisbon where she performs daily.

Madredeus & A Banda Cósmica - Metafonia (2008)

In more ways than one, Metafonia clearly signals a new beginning for Portuguese ensemble Madredeus. After having established themselves as one of the more prominent names in the ethnic/ambient music universe, and turning singer Teresa Salgueiro into a world music diva in the process, the band virtually disintegrated in 2007. Salgueiro quit to pursue a solo career, and with her also went Fernando Judice and José Peixoto. True, Madredeus went through several lineup changes in the past, but none were as traumatic as losing its singer, by far the most recognizable element of the band's sound and image. Even so, Pedro Ayres Magalhães, the only remaining founding member and main composer, decided to reshuffle and move on, instead of calling it quits. Metafonia is billed as a Madredeus & a Banda Cósmica album, since an entire band was asked to join for this project. To Madredeus stalwarts Pedro Ayres (classical guitar) and Carlos Maria Trindade (synthesizers), Ana Isabel Dias (harp), Sérgio Zurawski (electric guitarra), Gustavo Roriz (bass), Ruca Rebordão (percussion), Babi Bergamini (drums) and Jorge Varrecoso (violin) were added. Most critically, Salgado's place was split between vocalists Mariana Abrunheiro and Rita Damásio, who do the job well, but do not do it better. So the question critics and audiences have been debating since the release of Metafonia is, how appropriate it is to still call this band Madredeus, as it is clearly something else? The list of new instruments alone, most notably electric guitar, bass, and drums, hints at a music deemed unthinkable for the original Madredeus, a band that chased the purity of the acoustic sound (often using period instruments) with almost religious zeal. All this make it quite hard to objectively judge Metafonia. Let something be made absolutely clear, however: this is by no means a bad album. In fact, it is often quite beautiful -- but it is not like previous Madredeus albums. If Madredeus was often criticized for making the same record over and over again, that certainly does not apply to Metafonia. This album is as tastefully crafted as ever, but the music this time is less original, or perhaps one should say, less Portuguese. On the other hand, the influences of Brazilian, Caribbean, and African music, or even good old-fashioned pop/rock music, come to the fore with unprecedented force. Instead of the hypnotic lullabies of the past, the new Madredeus makes songs, some of which would not be out of place in the records of say, Bebel Gilberto or Césaria Évora. Aware that comparisons were inevitable, Ayres had the courage to confront the matter head on. Indeed, while the first disc of this double album features all new compositions, the entire second disc consists of Madredeus classics redone in the new style. The ultimate verdict is mixed. While Metafonia is probably no match for the haunting beauty of the early Madredeus, it is still an exquisite lounge/world music album. Yes, a huge chunk of the magic is undeniably gone with Salgueiro, but it is also true that the band had lost the quality of being mesmerizing and were instead, merely repetitive. Metafonia, on the other hand, is a bold new step. Only time will tell what will happen with Madredeus in the future, but with Metafonia at least they are showing a new sense of adventure, as well as their customary superlative craft. -- AMG
