Misia seemed destined from birth for a career in the arts. The need for creative expression is in her blood, inherited from her grandmother, a former music-hall entertainer, and her mother, a ballerina. Born in Oporto, Portugal, Misia experimented with different musical forms early on, but it was the allure of the fado, a Portuguese word meaning "fate", which captured her heart. A combination of a dramatic visual style, a mournful voice, and lyrics composed by some of today's most renowned Portuguese poets, including Nobel laureate Jose Saramago has made Misia one of Portugal's most respected artists.

Standing out amid a very strong crop of young new fado singers, Mozambique-born Mariza returns with Transparente, her third album. While her second, Fado Curvo, announced her as a great new voice on the scene, this one reaffirms that flowering promise while expanding the depth of her range. She gets help from great Brazilian cellist, arranger and producer Jacques Morelenbaum, who adds a lush orchestral backdrop to this folksy torch song form, extending the bittersweet melodies even though it does file away some of the edges. No matter, the singer's phrasing and timing are calibrated for drama, and her voice soars with happiness or quivers with passion. Highlights include a panoramic version of the fado traditional "O Silencio da Guitarra" and a small group rendering of "Recusa." Her moving away from the tradition may trouble purist, but this album endears itself easily if given a listen.

Another first rate Madredeus album full of beautiful guitarwork and stunning vocals from Teresa Salgueiro. This is up there with some of their best and certainly more consistent than some of their recent efforts.
If you are unfamiliar with this group, they are a traditional Portuguese group who play fado music with a modern slant. It is essentially a mix of folk and opera. The tone is often quite melancholy but in a good way and all the musicians are very accomplished, in particular Teresa, whose voice is simply one of the finest female voices in the world.

Joana Amendoeira (1982) is one of the youngest female singers in nowadays fados' circuit. At the age of twelve she had already participated at Lisbon's Grande Noite do Fado Amador, the most popular contest of amateur singers in the country, where she was highly acclaimed by the present press critics. In 1995 she competed again in the same event, that time in Oporto, where she obtained the first place in the women's voice category. A new "fadista" was born.
Invitations from in and outside the country began to pour in and since then Joana has been performed all over Europe, South America and Japan. After two albums, respectively Olhos garotos (1998) and Aquela rua (2000) her fame was definitively established.
She's also a resident singer in an famous fado house in Lisbon where she performs daily.

The band's founding members were Pedro Ayres Magalhães (Classical guitar), Rodrigo Leão (keyboard synthesizer), Francisco Ribeiro (cello), Gabriel Gomes (accordion) and Teresa Salgueiro (vocals). Magalhães and Leão formed the band in 1985, Ribeiro and Gomes joined in 1986. They'd been searching for a female singer, and found Teresa Salgueiro in one of Lisbon's night clubs. Teresa liked their music and agreed to join, so in 1987 Madredeus recorded their first album, Os dias da Madredeus.
The first album was recorded in their rehearsal space, a disused abbey in Lisbon. The recording was especially strenuous due to deafening interruptions every 5 minutes from Lisbon's tram service, which ran directly above. In honour of this unavoidable presence in their every performance, they named themselves after the line's nearby terminus, Madre de Deus (Mother of God), shortened to the vernacular Madredeus.

Deolinda is a project from Lisbon inspired by fado and its traditional roots in order to create original songs based on portuguese traditional and popular music. It came to life in 2006, by the hands of 4 young musicians with diverse musical backgrounds and experiences (such as classical music, jazz, ethnical and traditional music), searching to recreate a sound rooted in popular music through the crossing of different musical languages and musical research serving as a base for the group’s original compositions.

Joana Amendoeira (1982) is one of the youngest female singers in nowadays fados' circuit. At the age of twelve she had already participated at Lisbon's Grande Noite do Fado Amador, the most popular contest of amateur singers in the country, where she was highly acclaimed by the present press critics. In 1995 she competed again in the same event, that time in Oporto, where she obtained the first place in the women's voice category. A new "fadista" was born.
Invitations from in and outside the country began to pour in and since then Joana has been performed all over Europe, South America and Japan. After two albums, respectively Olhos garotos (1998) and Aquela rua (2000) her fame was definitively established.
She's also a resident singer in an famous fado house in Lisbon where she performs daily.
