May, 2003, UNEP Report wrote:Heavy metals-Bjelasnica
In both samples from this site (NUC-02-035-001 and -002), a high contamination of copper
(in the range of 2 000 mg/kg), zinc (~460-1 650 mg/kg) and lead (~290-600 mg/kg) could
be measured. The situation is similar to the one mentioned above for the Kalinovik Ammunition
Destruction Site (7.14). However, what is alarming in the results for this site - in
addition to the lead contamination - is the very high copper concentration in the samples
taken (for more information see Appendix K).
Bjelasnica - High plateau with pine forest cover.
Investigated surface area: 300 m x 600 m
Town/Population: The population is limited to three houses located approximately
2 km below the plateau. Civilians leave the area during the
winter season.
Other information: Altitude 1 220 m.
The site is unguarded, but not easy of access,
and is situated at some distance from any large population.
A number of craters have been formed due to explosions, and
others have been filled in. Ammunition destruction was stopped
a few weeks before the UNEP investigation as villagers
below the hillside began to complain about poor water quality
and health problems. They linked this to the ammunition
destruction activities.
