According to open sources, the pre-war manpower of GRU brigades was around 10K personnel. Even based on our incomplete data, which exclude those missing in action and the wounded, the GRU’s elite forces have lost over 20% of their pre-war strength.

Among them were also 4 chiefs of staff and 1 unit commander.
A total of 718 served in various reconnaissance roles.

The heaviest losses were in the 10th and 22nd Spetsnaz bgades of the Southern Mill District — 350 and 333 dead, respectively. Separate Spetsnaz companies of the Grnd Forces lost 151 personnel.
The highest regional losses correspond to the deployment locations of these units:

111 dead from Novosibirsk Oblast (24th Separate Spetsnaz Brigade),
108 from Krasnodar Krai (Molkin Spetsnaz base, 10th Brigade),
91 from Khabarovsk Krai (14th Brigade).

8/The heaviest losses occurred in the first months of the invasion. Afterward, Russia reorganized its Spetsnaz forces, refraining from using them as frontline infantry. From August 2022 to May 2024, monthly reported losses did not exceed 43.

However, starting in May 2024,

launched large-scale offensives toward Pokrovsk and Vovchansk, and by August, was forced into defensive battles in the Kursk region. GRU special forces were once again deployed as assault infantry.

Their losses in the eight months of 2024 exceeded the combined losses of 2022 and 2023.
