#1 Photographic Cultural Project in Sarajevo 2026

Post by youngyoung »

Good morning guys, my name is Paolo, I live in Rome, I'm 39 years old and I'm a freelance journalist who has been studying the wars in the Balkans for 20 years. I apologize for writing in English, but I have never managed to learn your language.
I am carrying out a very large and complex cultural project in Sarajevo which consists of tracing the people - or their families - portrayed in historical photos of the siege. I would therefore like to ask if, by publishing photographs taken during that period here, it is possible to be supported in the search for these people, who I would like to interview for the project I am talking about. I am available for any clarification, thank you very much.

good evening, Paolo

based on your goal to identify the people and/or their families in photos, i can suggest you the Sniper Alley Project, founded by Džemil Hodžić, who has a professional media background.

the project aims to archive photos, and search for people in them. it has an extensive archive of those photos taken by various international photojournalists at that time, and it has a significant following among Sarajevans. id recommend reaching out to Džemil directly.

another helpful site i would recommend is https://famacollection.org , a multimedia archive with several photos, videos, and even oral histories. might be helpful for background research and location data. good luck with the project!

Thanks so much, friend. I'm already in touch with both of them, but unfortunately they have a lot of work to do, and I'm trying to work as independently as possible. In any case, great suggestions!

There is a photograph of a man in a white car. I can't find it, but it is posted many times, he was killed shortly after that picture was taken, and I am a good friend of his son... I know he has that photograph printed in really big format at his home.
