BERLIN, April 10 (Reuters) - More than one in five people living in Germany were at risk of poverty or social exclusion last year, according to official data released on Wednesday showing the scale of hardship in Europe's largest economy.
This applied to 17.7 million people in 2023, or 21.2% of the population, the federal statistics office reported.
The percentage of German considered at risk of poverty was 14.3% in 2023, a slight improvement on the 14.8% reported in 2022

Although Germany has a strong economy, it ranks 19th on the list of poverty rates for OECD countries, with a poverty rate of 11.6 percent. Furthermore, the number of senior citizens who are at risk of living in poverty has sharply increased over the past decade. In 2011, around 13 percent of pensioners were in danger of living in poverty, but by 2022, this figure had risen to almost 17.5 percent. This development is a reflection of inflation and shows that people who are relying on savings and their pensions are especially at risk of being unable to cope with the cost of living.
