When Daniel Levy found out that Liverpool were hijacking a move for Luis Diaz he threatened to report LFC’s recruitment staff to John Henry and Mike Gordon. The key flaw in that plan being that Henry and Gordon were delighted with the strategy pursued.

Liverpool’s recruitment team asked that they could be informed of any negotiations between Porto and Spurs. They told the players’ representatives they would take any Spurs deal for Diaz to Fenway for consideration.

Once a deal was agreed with Spurs, Liverpool were given sight of the deal. Ward and Edwards, working closely with Dave Fallows, the head of recruitment, moved quickly. FSG agreed to pay the fee.

Diaz and his representatives told Porto that Liverpool were the preferred destination. A transfer agreement was in place by the end of Thursday.
