PSYCHOBILLY music is based on ROCKABILLY, but with a thrashier, heavier playing style.
The term may be a shortened version of "Psychopathic Rockabilly", if thats any help.
The style as we know it first appeared in England in the early 1980's and was originally pioneered by THE METEORS, although some say the CRAMPS had a head start in the USA by mixing 50's rock and roll with horror imagery.
For years, the entire scene revolved around ONE venue, The "KLUB FOOT" which was based in the upstairs room at the CLARENDON pub in Hammersmith, West London. Such was the popularity and notoriety of the venue, SIX "Stomping At The KLUB FOOT" live albums were released in the mid '80s', along with many "Cash In" compilations also recorded there. Featured bands included THE METEORS, THE STINGRAYS, THE GUANA BATZ, THE TALL BOYS, RESTLESS, DEMENTED ARE GO!, FRENZY, THE MILKSHAKES, TORMENT, SKITZO. A real hotbed of talent!
Surprisingly enough, the three most well known Psychobilly bands THE METEORS, KING KURT and THE CRAMPS did not feature on the Klub Foot albums, and in the case of The CRAMPS, didn't even play there!
In the late 1980s, the Clarendon pub (and therefore the KLUB FOOT) was demolished to make way for a new Town Development project, and it unfortunately spelled the end of the original UK Psychobilly scene as we then knew it, as the main meeting place and best known Psychobilly venue in the world had now gone. Since then, gigs have been few and far between, despite several efforts to carry on the "Klub" at different locations that were either hard to get to (Hendon LMS), badly advertised (Boston Arms) or just too much like hard work for sporadic gigs.
The scene seems to be at its strongest in Germany and America nowadays, with festivals being the main events. Japan went crazy for Psychobilly a few years ago, but as with many Japanese scenes, it died off fairly quickly. There is an interesting new wave of stuff coming from Eastern Europe and the former USSR countries. America seems to be spawning a new generation of Psycho bands, but it is sadly becoming a fashion statement now as more and more people cross over from the new punk scene and use Psychobilly style for street credibility. Having said that, I suppose this does help get a few more people into the music, even if they are only doing it because its "cool".
SKITZO are mainly influenced by 1950s rockabilly, especially CARL PERKINS and GENE VINCENT, although the end product sounds nothing like it at all. Newer bands that have been a big influence are THE STINGRAYS, and BATMOBILE. The various members all enjoy varied forms of music, rocking and otherwise.
