Putin has the most to lose from a destroyed relationship with Turkey
The collision between the Russian and Turkish air forces have hung in the air ever since Russian warplanes were installed in northern Syria in September. The downed Russian plane is likely to dramatically worsen relations between the two countries - a development which Russia has the most to lose.
Violations of Turkish airspace began almost immediately. First, protested Turkey and NATO official, but as NATO and Russia started to coordinate their operations in Syria, the Turks of speaking with minor Russian overflights.
But the past week has Ankara's patience started to run out. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is upset that Russian intervention in the Syrian civil war has promontory directed against Turkey's allies there, mainly FSA militia. The FSA is now a common front for secular, democratic Syrians and the Muslim Brotherhood, Erdogan favorites among Syrian groups.
AD:
Even more controversial in Turkey is the recent weeks massive and bloody Russian bombing of Turkmen villages in northwestern Syria. Like the Turkish side of the border area is full of Arabic-speaking communities, so the Syrian side packed with Turkmen-speaking villages. Last Thursday, after Turkish Foreign Ministry delivered a sharp protest to the Russian ambassador, had to an anonymous foreign ministry spokesman target a severe indictment of Moscow:
- The Russian operations have nothing to do with fighting terrorism. Bombings against civilians Turkmen villages can have very serious consequences.
A Turkmen guerrilla group, Sultan Abdul Hamid brigade with ties to the larger FSA militia, is active in the border area against President al-Assad's forces. According to the Turkish government spokesmen have Russian planes released the cluster bombs, a prohibited ammunition, over an area of more than fifty Turkmen villages. According to the Turks, it is not about the military operations against the belligerent Turkomans, without reprisals against civilians Turkomans.
There is no doubt that Turkey is consulting with its allies, mainly the United States, before it was decided to resort to such drastic measures to shoot down a Russian aircraft.
Behind this incident conceals a large and intractable dilemma, which can generate more dangerous crises ahead: the al-Assad regime and its Iranian and Russian help forces to direct their best gunpowder against the Syrian forces that enjoy international credibility and legitimacy, hence the FSA and its allies . Al-Assad's portrait apology and explanation is that he is defending his country against foreign Islamic terrorists, who IS and-Nusra Front.
FSA is the group that would be backed by the West and Turkey in future negotiations, and therefore the more dangerous of al-Assad than the fanatics of IS and Nusra, which has neither legitimacy nor international support.
Until the IS-attack against the Russian passenger aircraft over Sinai three weeks ago, the Russian air liner over Syria is a piece of theater: Man pretending to attack the IS but hit especially against the FSA. The Syrian president has indulged like charades. While al-Assad IS depicted as a danger for Syria and the world, he has played under the covers with the murderous organization; bought its oil and avoided attacking the enclaves.
IS and al-Assad has clearly made up of the first joint kill the moderate opposition before smoke together in a final battle over the country. But this is unacceptable to Turkey, regardless care and care for the Turkmen. About the only reasonable alternative to al-Assad and IS crushed by Russia and Iran, there is nothing to fight for Syria to Turkey and NATO.
When Vladimir Putin and Tayyip Erdogan first emerged as authoritarian and people dear land ancestors in the early 2000s made many comparisons between the two. The chemistry between them was excellent and the gentlemen enjoyed each other's company. Trade flourished and has increased almost tenfold since Erdogan came to power in 2002. But the old Turkish mistrust of the historic arch enemy has never dispelled. For old Russia was Istanbul Tsarigrad, the Russian religious mind and heart, as the writer Dostoyevsky, and many with him, dreamed of conquering and incorporate. Also during Joseph Stalin and the communists expressed Russia threatening claim to the city and the Bosphorus, the strait through Istanbul, where most of the Russian trade - and the weapons to the Russian bases in Syria - passes.
As it looks today, with NATO united behind Turkey, Russia has far more to lose devastated relationships than Turkey. Russia's interests in Syria are a trifle compared to its dependence on good relations with Turkey. In the balance is also a planned oil pipeline from Qatar via Turkey to Europe, which would radically affect Moscow's ability to use its energy exports as leverage against European states.
The Syrian government, in Moscow's desire, has declared that it will not allow the planned pipeline - one more reason for Turkey and the Western powers that wish away the al-Assad regime.

Samprotivsviju wrote:
