CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS


The University of Erfurt is pleased to announce the 7th International Summer School MUSLIMS IN THE WEST , which will take place from August 2 - 17, 2008 at the University of Erfurt. The Summer School will be chaired by Prof. Dr. Jamal Malik (Islamic Studies, University Erfurt). Sixteen young scholars from Muslim countries or countries with significant Muslim populations as well as students from the University of Erfurt will participate in this cultural encounter, which will be framed by a multidisciplinary approach comprising the humanities, social studies and natural sciences.

Ever since its involvement in the “Dialogue with Islam”, an academic activity initiated by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in 2002, the University of Erfurt has been actively engaged in the increasingly socio-politically relevant debates on “Islam and the West”. In this context, the Summer School, financially supported by the DAAD, contributes to mutual acceptance and understanding. Besides the creation and consolidation of a permanent basis for a dialogue, the goal of the project is to provide the possibility to directly experience the pluralistic structure of Islam in the European context, and to point out the well-advanced mutual interlacing, not only between Muslims and non-Muslims, but also among the Muslims themselves.

The Summer School will focus on three topics. As an introductory note, a geographical and historical perspective on the encounter between Muslims and the “Christian Europe” will be presented at the outset. The discussion will be continued with an analysis of the situation of Muslims in the Diaspora on the basis of selected case studies (Germany, Great Britain, and France). The last part will be devoted to the reflection of the relationships between societal minorities and majority.
The educational part of the summer school will be accompanied by a cultural program. Short trips showing the different faces of Erfurt, Thuringia and Germany, along with the “traditional” multicultural evening have proved to be impressive highlights of the previous summer schools.

Participants will receive a grant covering their travel and accommodation expenses. Each participant is expected to give a short presentation on a specific topic. The working language is English.
