The Album Leaf is the recording moniker of guitarist Jimmy LaValle. Though LaValle's main commitment is as a member of San Diego-based post-rock outfit Tristeza, he has found time to record as a solo artist, creating lush, meditative instrumental albums that fall somewhere between Erik Satie, John Fahey, Brian Eno, and the Sea & Cake. IN A SAFE PLACE, LaValle's third full-length release and his debut for SubPop, builds on the spare, trance-like qualities of his first two albums, fleshing out the repetitive patterns and delicate textures with the help of digital shading and instrumental support from members of Icelandic rock group Sigur Ros. The wispy, airy strains of the opener, "Window," put one in mind of Eno's AMBIENT 1: MUSIC FOR AIRPORTS, luring the listener into a bright netherworld. A soothing digital pulse backs a gentle, chiming guitar pattern in "On Your Way," while the hypnotic "Over the Pond" features a simple piano refrain repeated, then detailed with strings and Sigur Ros's accompaniment. The effect is a powerful one, giving dimension and contour to LaValle's already developed musical vision and, ultimately, making IN A SAFE PLACE the artist's strongest statement to date

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Now I Got Worry (1996)

"How much blues do you use before you use it up?" queries singer and guitarist Billy Gibbons in "What's Up With That," the first single from ZZ Top's new album, Rhythmeen. But the real question posed by Rhythmeen – and by the latest blast from Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Now I Got Worry – is: Whose music is it anyway? If anything, these albums revive the age-old dispute: What right do white boys, young and middle-aged, have to play the blues?

For one thing, it ain't exactly blues that either of these bands peddles, as both ZZ Top and the Blues Explosion turn tradition on its head in their respective ways. ZZ Top milk a conventional blues progression for all its worth on "Prettyhead" and add honking harmonica to "What's Up With That." But the booming volume and Gibbons' feed-back-drenched guitar breaks betray ZZ's grounding in '60s garage rock and psychedelia and '70s arena rock. Likewise, the Blues Explosion hot-wire their manic deconstructions of blues and rockabilly with New York art-punk noise – which is no great surprise, considering that singer and guitarist Jon Spencer was a founding member of the seminal, cacophonous, '80s scum-rock band Pussy Galore.

Touted by ZZ Top as a return to roots, Rhythmeen finds the power trio ditching the synth-pop thud of their '80s hits "Legs" and "Sharp Dressed Man." Instead, Gibbons, bassist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard evoke the roadhouse boogie of the earlier '70s stompers – "La Grange," "Tush" – that first brought them fame. Now I Got Worry finds the Blues Explosion also stripping down to basics. Spencer and the band eschew the hip-hop influences that came to a head on 1994's Orange, opting instead for a more gutbucket approach (although as the Minor Threat-style "Identify" proves, these guys are young enough to consider punk rock to be roots music). Ironically, ZZ Top offer a nod in the other direction. "Rhythmeen" features head-bobbing beats a la Dr. Dre, while the droning intro of "My Mind Is Gone" echoes Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise."

If there is any controversy worth arguing about in ZZ's or the Blues Explosion's appropriation of African-American musical forms, it is in each band's sometimes questionable irreverence. Spencer's faux backwoods drawl verges on minstrel-show insult. Gibbons has his own vocal affectations, turning his "things" into "thangs." As for ZZ Top's lyrical concerns, bad-hair days ("Hairdresser") and sex changes ("Zipper Job") might not be considered respectable topics in a music born of hard times and suffering.

But to their credit, neither ZZ Top nor the Blues Explosion sands down the rough edges in their blues; instead, both groups add a few jagged touches of their own. Spencer in particular works up a lunatic energy usually associated with the best rock & roll. Spencer also has the balls to bring in Stax-Volt soul legend Rufus Thomas and Mississippi blues master R.L. Burnside for guest appearances on Now I Got Worry. Thomas and Burnside actually blow the youngster away in terms of performance. But at least Spencer is willing to acknowledge his sources.

The Black Keys - The Big Come Up (2002)

Rawboned blues duo the Black Keys hail from Akron, Ohio, but a listen to The Big Come Up suggests the Keys may have been raised by Mississippi ridge-runners. While Dan Auerbach's overdriven ax is powered by the same internal-combustion engine that drove blues legends Junior Kimbrough and Fred McDowell, this is no po-faced retro show. There's Wu-Tang Clan-schooled funk in drummer Patrick Carney's fatback beats, and on the cranked-up "Countdown," Auerbach suppresses a sob with the droll closing couplet, "You stole my heart and damn near drove me mad/I gotta get back home to my mom and dad." From the truthfully titled "Heavy Soul" to a devolved, choogling cover of the Beatles' "She Said, She Said," this is a righteous choice for rock debut of the year. In a world gone White Stripes crazy, save room in your heart and CD wallet for the Black Keys.

Mark Farina - Mushroom Jazz, Vol. 5 (2005)

Hailing originally from Chicago but long associated with San Francisco's jazz-house scene, Mark Farina returns to his bread-and-butter mix series Mushroom Jazz after 2003's eclectic artist record Air Farina. Less laid-back than Thievery Corporation but not quite as deep as Om label mates like Marques Wyatt, the Mushroom records often delve into hip-hop, and Jazz 5 is no exception. But while rhymes and raps jump out alongside snappy beats to startle the listener from chill tune-induced hypnosis, large chunks of the record, especially in the last half, are completely instrumental. Some of Air Farina's electro-funk adventurousness is here as well; check out the dazed and hazy original track "Cali Spaces." Consistently clever and packed with urban energy, it's an ideal Sunday evening record for those not quite ready to let the weekend end.

All the tracks on the ´Sequins´ series, Roisins debut album, are the results of Roisin´s new fruitful collaboration with producer Matthew Herbert , who she met as a result of his remix work for her band Moloko. This is the first time the highly-revered electronic pioneer Herbert has produced an album for another artist, aside from his wife Dani Siciliano. Here the significant ground covered on ´Sequins 1´ by Roisin and Herbert indicates what to expect from the broader scope of the pair´s collaboration on the forthcoming album.

Having worked on several Moloko remixes from as early as 1996 Roisin´s voice had become a familiar friend ,” says Herbert .” I had always loved the ease with which it sat in the textures of the sounds I work with. To work on her solo record struck me as the perfect place to try and mix proper musical charisma with noises not often heard on the radio.”

This first ´Sequins´ EP commences with the agenda-setting ´Ruby Blue´ , which begins with an ear-catching meld of distorted funk and Andrews Sisters harmonies. It slides around like a languid and sinuous eel, all finger-pops and syncopated handclaps, before busting out with a too-loud fuzz guitar and Roisin´s provocative kitten purr. ´Off On It´ , which follows, has a percussive track that sounds like a steam train pulling slowly out of a siding, while Roisin delightfully slurs her way through a miasma of flirtatious signs and signifiers.

Third up, ´Night Of the Dancing Flame´ is like a lost classic number featuring either the elephants on parade from the Jungle Book (tremendous muted trumpet blasts) or Josephine Baker in all her Parisian glory. As it lollops along with cartoonish gait, Roisin tells more tales of sexual abandon in not entirely private places, and you realise that between them her and Herbert might have hit upon a long untapped resource of Cab Calloway-influenced pop music. It´s crazy and not a little infectious.

Sequins 1´ is completed by the magical warmth of ´ Through Time´ , which in its hazier moments approaches the gentle feel of one of the great ballads off a good Stevie Wonder record.

The ´Sequins´ EPs will also introduce another powerfully creative collaboration with the artist Simon Henwood , who has painted a number of large-scale portraits of Roisin, which are to be exhibited at the Hospital in London in March 2005*, and will be reproduced one at a time as the sleeves to ´Sequins 1 – 3´.

Badmarsh & Shri - Dancing Drums (1999)

Badmarsh & Shri are that rarest of dance outfits--they're actually better live than on wax. That might be because DJ-programmer Badmarsh and instrumentalist Shri bring another vocalist and percussionist on the road with them, but it's more likely that their sound--an exceedingly organic blend of dance-floor beats and Indian sounds (tabla, flute)--really comes alive in a club. None of that should imply that Dancing Drums is a sterile listen; rather, the enveloping sounds, the funky bass lines, and the use of a lot of sound loops make the album a relaxing experience--but one with a beat, too. Unlike Asian Dub Foundation, another group that brings the sounds and rhythms of the Asian subcontinent into the clubs, Badmarsh & Shri aren't out to dazzle you--sometimes you even get the feeling that they think that would be too easy--but if you listen deeply, you'll be moved just the same.

Caribou - The Milk of Human Kindness (05/2005)

Dan Snaith's Manitoba project is back with a new name but his hypnotic music hasn't changed. Caribou, like Manitoba, is still heavy on electronic jam sessions, with peculiar swirls of sound and stoned instrumental wanderings leading you who-knows-where. The Milk of Human Kindness also has that faint whisp of ‘60s bubblegum pop (see "Bees") and Stereolab-like drone present on Manitoba records like Up In Flames. Such reference points provide welcome toeholds in the midst of all the laptop anarchy, preventing the whole thing from drifting off into the ether. Snaith puts a few other twists on Milk, with mixed success. On the plus side, the sharp opener "Yeti" is a quick burst of fun, while "Lord Leopard" knocks up the beat a notch toward hip-hop territory. The lamentable "A Final Warning," however, falls off the deep end into an almost comedic dead-end. Still, Snaith continues to show off boundless creativity, and when he conjures the right mix of chaos and cohesion like he does on "Brahminy Kite," the result is a glorious noise all his own. –Matthew Cooke

Umar Bin Hassin was once part of the Last Poets, a group whose incendiary rhetoric was backed by African percussion and preceded the hip-hop generation's Afrocentric quips. Hassin now works solo, and his latest release has several updates/remakes of Last Poets staples, including two versions of "This Is Madness." Producer Bill Laswell recruited two Parliament/Funkadelic instrumentalists, bassist Bootsy Collins and keyboardist Bernie Worrell, plus many other fine players, and virtually recreated The Last Poets tapestry, except that this time there's an electronic overlay as well as a percussive one. Hassin's voice hasn't been dulled by the years and seems more enraged and angered at the nation's racial and social injustices.
