Live at the Montreal Jazz Festival features Diana Krall on vocals and piano along with her band of Anthony Wilson on guitar, Peter Erskine on drums, and Robert Hurst on bass. Most of the songs performed here are culled from Krall’s recent Verve release, The Girl in the Other Room.

The album, which has been certified Gold in the US and double Platinum in Krall’s native Canada, marked a change in that it showcased for the first time Krall’s skills as a songwriter. Many of the album’s songs were penned by Krall and her husband, Elvis Costello.

Some of the Krall/Costello compositions featured on Live at the Montreal Jazz Festival are “Abandoned Masquerade,” “Departure Bay,” and “Narrow Daylight.” The DVD also features Krall’s concert opener, the original instrumental “Sometimes I Just Freak Out,” a song which is not available on the US version of her latest CD.

Krall also interpreted songs from a wide range of artists for The Girl in the Other Room, including Tom Waits (“Temptation”), Mose Allison (“Stop This World”), and Joni Mitchell (“Black Crow”). Live performances of all of these can be seen on the Live at the Montreal Jazz Festival DVD.

GRAMMY®-winner Krall revisits some classic favorites from her earlier Verve and Impulse! recordings on this new DVD as well. During this performance, she included “All or Nothing at All” from her album Love Scenes and “East of the Sun (West of the Moon)” and “Devil May Care” from When I Look in Your Eyes.

Archie Shepp - Ballads for Trane (1977)

Archie Shepp has been at various times a feared firebrand and radical, soulful throwback and contemplative veteran. He was viewed in the '60s as perhaps the most articulate and disturbing member of the free generation, a published playwright willing to speak on the record in unsparing, explict fashion about social injustice and the anger and rage he felt. His tenor sax solos were searing, harsh and unrelenting, played with a vivid intensity. But in the '70s, Shepp employed a fatback/swing-based R&B approach, and in the '80s he mixed straight bebop, ballads and blues pieces displaying little of the fury and fire from his earlier days. Shepp studied dramatic literature at Goddard College, earning his degree in 1959. He played alto sax in dance bands and sought theatrical work in New York. But Shepp switched to tenor, playing in several free jazz bands. He worked with Cecil Taylor, co-led groups with Bill Dixon and played in The New York Contemporary Five with Don Cherry and John Tchicai. He led his own bands in the mid-'60s with Roswell Rudd, Bobby Hutcherson, Beaver Harris and Grachan Moncur III. His Impulse albums included poetry readings and quotes from James Baldwin and Malcolm X. Shepp's releases sought to paint an aural picture of African-American life, and included compositions based on incidents like Attica or folk sayings. He also produced plays in New York among them "The Communist" in 1965, and "Lady Day: A Musical Tragedy" in 1972 with trumpeter/composer Cal Massey. But starting in the late '60s, the rhetoric was toned down and the anger began to disappear from Shepp's albums. He substituted a more celebratory, and at times reflective attitude. Shepp turned to academia in the late '60s, teaching at SUNY in Buffalo, then the University of Massachusetts. He was named an associate professor there in 1978. Shepp toured and recorded extensively in Europe during the '80s, cutting some fine albums with Horace Parlan, Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen and Jasper van't Hof. He has recorded extensively for Impulse, Byg, Arista/Freedom, Phonogram, Steeplechase, Denon, Enja, EPM and Soul Note among others over the years.Unfortunately his tone declined from the mid-1980's on (his highly original sound was his most important contribution to jazz) and Archie Shepp is a less significant figure in the 1990's than one might hope.

Verve Remixed, Vol. 3 (2005)

It's an idea that never should've worked in the first place: Verve classics remixed by today's hottest DJs and producers. Yet here's the third installment in the successful series and quality control remains high. Granted, there are a few tracks on each compilation that don't work as well as others and Verve Remixed 3 is no exception. The Postal Service take on Nina Simone's "Little Girl Blue," for instance, makes for a pleasing listen, but sounds too much like the former (the Album Leaf does a better job at staying out of Simone's way). Adam Freeland's "Fever" and Max Sedgley's "Peter Gunn," however, get the balance right. Both songs have been updated for the dancefloor, but Sarah Vaughn's exquisite vocals remain front and center. Then there's Lyrics Born with Jimmy Smith's "Stay Loose," which keeps Smith's groovy organ work in the foreground, but makes a funky track funkier yet.

Boris Kovac & the LaDaABa Orchest - Ballads at the End of Time: La Danza Apocalypsa Balcanica, Part Two (2003)

The last time we encountered Boris Kovac & the LaDaABa Orchest and their keening, mad music was September 11, 2001. The band was wearing white tuxedos and mismatched ties and they played like the band on the sinking Titanic, fully aware that only the paying passengers could buy space in the lifeboats. From the wiggly underwater shot on this back cover, this is about half an hour after every drink on the ship came with ice. The orchestra is reconciled to their fate of ending up so much fish food; they're playing for themselves, as they no longer have a need for tips, and as for their audience, they look forward to entertaining only the dancing skeletons in Davy Jones's locker. Ballads at the End of Time opens with the explosion of steam from the brakes of what has to be the Orient Express and the howl of a wolf. This is "Danza Transilvanica", after all. A gypsy violin begins sobbing over the martial tattoo of a snare drum. Only after a long somber lead-in, phrases marked by the explosive blat of horns, does a jazzy European rumba slowly and smoothly spin out and begin softly swinging. This is the second and final album of the La Danza Apocalypsa Balcanica Project, and this might what is danced to the morning after the catastrophe. Leader Kovac confesses, "I hope that such a theme will never inspire me again." Wow, why so glum, chum?

Living in Novi Sad, Yugoslavia, surrounded by an unstable geography called the Balkans where the missiles were as frequent as rain, where peacekeeping armies poured nuclear waste into the rivers, and whose very name has become synonymous with the disintegration and the atomization of civilized societies, Kovac and troupe might have every reason to be a bit melancholy. La Danza Apocalypsa Balcanica is Kovac's artistic answer to pressure: from the dangerous and confusing internal politics of his land to the fact that his country is only now starting to recover from international pariah status. He's playing furiously, with only one single message: "Dance, here and now, because it could be your last!"

Nonetheless, Part Two comes across like the morning after the apocalypse. The eccentric swirl of Balkan-influenced tangos, rumbas, calypsos, and waltzes sound as if they are being played by a band in a decadent 1920's café somewhere in Vienna. More especially when even the titles of the normally staid waltzes are considered: "Early Morning Waltz", "Waltz from Careless Street", and "Broken Waltz". The "Early Morning Waltz" begins as a slow almost dirge-like waltz, the lead-in can barely be heard, like the tick of a distant clock is a stick tapping out time on a cymbal. Soon a jazzy bass picks up the beat, an accordion and gypsy violin and gypsy guitar pep things up into an oom-pah signature with a swooning clarinet carrying the lead. The feeling, alas, is too good to last, and the tune winds down and sinks into the beginning slow phrase, moving as slowly as the Danube before the piece gets second wind and revisits the peppy section again. The elegant calliope-sounding "Waltz from Careless Street", with the gentle tinkle of a celeste, the melody carried by a high sweet clarinet before running into a passage dripping with melancholy. Rain on cobblestone streets mood. "Broken Waltz" has a strange time signature for a waltz, and is a very uplifting piece.

For this listener, the European treatment of classic Latin dance rhythms is the most beguiling. "Beguine at the End" (wordplay at work in that title, I'll wager) and "Cha Cha" (with a mix of bongos, cabaret-style accordion, and sliding clarinet) are just hypnotizing. Especially when the cha cha segues into a crazed tango then finally erupts into a jazzy explosion. And, yes, you'll long to spin and sway. Infectious, too, are the tunes that mix up 20 or so Balkan influences, like "Interlude at the Gang" complete with the noise of a happy dog howling at the moon. Boris and Company's music digs straight under the skin even when laden with melancholia, such as the sob of the "Colour of Remembrance" or the moody, contemplative "At the End of Time". That sense of melancholic disbelief: Can it be over? Can it really be over?

But if you're at all like me, you'll hear the final quarter minute of the album, just the sound of "Birds", and know that all can be all right with the world.

Ballads at the End of Time made it onto the Top Ten of the European World Music Charts recently, so you might suspect that the music speaks to many people outside of the Balkans. This is finely crafted, polished, wonderful stuff, and creative to an extreme. In the meantime, it's sad adieu to La Danza Apocalypsa Balcanica. Farewell for now, Boris and friends, I will see you in a much better world. All I know for sure is this group is poised and they are no doubt determined to surprise us again the next time out.

Fela Kuti - Coffin for Head of State/Unknown Soldier (2000)

Fela Kuti made some frantic albums in his career--ones that popped with his enthusiastic political disobedience and ones that roared with fury at the Nigerian system and Africa's disadvantaged position in the late-20th century. But Coffin for Head of State is a different tiger. It's a downturned, sad, melancholic 22-minute work that signaled how Fela would make his previously general criticisms of Nigerian politics very specific. He recorded the album in 1981, several years after the Nigerian military's destruction of his self-declared Kalakuta Republic (a residential compound, in truth) and the ensuing, relentlessly violent assault on its residents, including his mother, who later died as a result of her injuries. Coffin finds Fela castigating Muslim and Christian leaders for idling while the government raped and pillaged, and it boasts a visionary quality in the antiphonal "Amens" that gets bounced through the band. Filling out this double-length CD is Unknown Soldier, a pointed musical assault on the government's position that "unknown soldiers" had perpetrated the Kalakuta attack, when Fela well knew that the 1,000-man rampage was officially sanctioned. The 30-minute track that comprises Unknown is still Fela in a keyed-down mode, railing against the attackers with his customary electric keyboard, a battery of percussionists, all of it stewing for 15 minutes before he bellows in with bright backing vocal chants. After Coffin's melancholy, this is uplifting enough to make you share in his indignation. These sessions mark an unparalleled peak for the musical display of fury and political criticism.

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Live in Europe(1973)



This album has often taken it on the chin from fans and critics who failed to perceive its value. Long regarded as an inferior release, mostly because it emerged at the tail-end of CCR's history, after Tom Fogerty had quit, and came from the tour associated with unpopular Mardi Gras album, Live In Europe was considered something of a bummer. Neither the original LP release (which spread under an hour of music onto four sides), nor the edited domestic CD presented much to enjoy -- the band sounded flat and harsh. Victor Entertainment's 1998 remastering from Japan, in 20-bit sound off the uncut tape (which restores two songs off the original LP that are missing from the American CD), rectifies those mistakes and more. It puts the listener seemingly at the concert (and center-stage in the stereo mix) in terms of the closeness of the sound, and gives us a chance to hear how spirited and refreshed CCR was performing as a trio. The band reinvented songs they'd originally cut as a quartet in blazing fury, with Doug Clifford pounding away with a rock-solid beat, Stu Cook's bass doing graceful acrobatics covering for the "missing" rhythm guitar, and John Fogerty in a soaring virtuoso performance that must've cost him five pounds in sweat alone each night on this tour. The 20-bit audio gives the band a close, loud, crunching sound like a Chuck Berry performance on 50,000 watts of amplification and, given the animated nature of the performance, the whole album now makes for bracing as well as fascinating listening, with "Keep On Chooglin'" a great way to end the official history of the band, assuming that it had to end. The original tape always had some minor flaws, in terms of microphone placement and mixing, but the Victor reissue minimizes them. As a bonus, the Japanese CD restores Stu Cook's "Door To Door," (one of the better non-Fogerty numbers off of Mardi Gras), to the song lineup. The album doesn't appear to offer much, but with "Sweet Hitch-Hiker," "Up Around The Bend," "Hey Tonight," or "It Came Out of the Sky," much less "Proud Mary," "Green River," or "Lodi," there is still no earthly reason for it to be dropped by Fantasy when it was issued on CD

The first live show for 36 years by Eric Clapton's blues/rock "power trio" may have attracted the attentions of the media, but it has had difficulty snaring anyone under 40; young people are conspicuous by their absence from the bars and foyers of the Royal Albert Hall.
The atmosphere is less like a rock concert than a corporate hospitality tent at Wimbledon. Paunchy men in sports jackets clink ice in gin and tonics, and mumsy ladies fan themselves with pricey souvenir programmes. Presumably some of them were here the last time Cream played the Royal Albert Hall, squinting at the band's November 1968 farewell concert through a fug of aromatic smoke. Tonight, however, the air is thick with something else, not as pungent, but no less heady: nostalgia for a lost era, when a 15-minute drum solo called Toad could have your average audience roaring their approval, rather than clambering over each other to reach the exits.

You can see why anyone who wasn't there at the time might approach Cream's surprise reformation with trepidation. History frequently gives the impression Cream were formed for the specific purpose of giving the Jimi Hendrix Experience something to upstage.
Hendrix, rather unsportingly, fetched up in London two weeks after their first gig, and immediately set about making them look a bit stodgy. He has continued to do so after his death; one of the few benefits attached to choking on your own vomit at 27 being that it prevents you from reaching middle age, donning an Armani suit and crooning deadly soft rock ballads about how your wife looks wonderful tonight. In addition, as Clapton notes between songs, Cream "didn't go on for very long - the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune cut us off in our prime" - but their 2 year career was responsible for generating a lot of concepts that leave you wondering whether listening to rock music is such an edifying way to spend your time.

Their star-heavy line up of Clapton, drummer Ginger Baker and bassist Jack Bruce gave birth to the notion of the supergroup, in which already-famous rock musicians struggle to squeeze their collective egos into a confined space, usually with artistically disastrous results. Their massive-grossing US tours gave rise to the concept of stadium rock as we know it today. And their deathless penchant for extended soloing gave rise to improvisatory jazz-rock, perhaps the most noisome genre in musical history. After the band's split, Clapton dismissed its "maestro bullshit", but tonight, he seems worryingly reconciled to it. "We're going to play for as long as we can," he announces happily, a remark greeted with deafening cheers, rather than the deeply apprehensive gulp it warrants. A computer generated approximation of a psychedelic slideshow bathes the back of the stage, but what is startling about Cream's oeuvre is how decidedly un-cosmic it sounds in the cold light of 2005. Spoonful and Sleepy Time Time offer a curiously straightforward take on the blues: the solos may be lengthy, and accompanied by much pursing of the lips, frowning etc, but they're oddly prosaic and polished. You get a brief glimpse of what the fuss was about during Rollin' and Tumblin', when Bruce abandons his bass guitar in favour of a harmonica, and Clapton and Baker churn out a frantic, clattering riff. Baker turns out to be the evening's surprise star. A noticeable resemblance to Wilfred Bramble in Steptoe and Son bodes ill, but his drumming is fantastic, adding a snapping, raw edge. In fact, it is Cream's theoretically less substantial material that stands up best four decades on. Full of snaking melodic turns and false endings, Badge is simply a fantastic pop song. Deserted Cities of the Heart strikes an admirable balance between lush vocal harmonies and hulking, muscular power, and even the whimsical psych-pop oddity Pressed Rat and Warthog has the sort of character you are hard-pressed to find in less arcane areas of Cream's catalogue.

Whether their reformation is enough to firm up Cream's shaky place in the pantheon of rock legends is a moot point. But as the crowd rises mid-song to cheer another Clapton solo, and coloured lights bounce off balding pates in the stalls, you suspect that contemporary reappraisal is the last thing their fans are interested in.

The Essential Mike Oldfield is a good overview of highlights from Mike Oldfield's Virgin and Warner recordings. Some of the tracks are included in their original form, while others -- including, inexplicably, "Tubular Bells III" -- are present in edited or remixed versions. It's not a bad sampler, but it's frustrating since it doesn't present the original recorded versions of each song. Nevertheless, it is an adequate summary of Oldfield's '90s recordings.

Deep Purple In Rock(1970)



After satisfying all of their classical music kinks with keyboard player Jon Lord's overblown Concerto for Group and Orchestra, Deep Purple's soon-to-be classic Mark II lineup made their proper debut on 1970's awesome In Rock. The cacophony of sound (led by Ritchie Blackmore's blistering guitar solo), which introduces the opener "Speed King," makes it immediately obvious that the band is no longer fooling around. The slightly less intense "Bloodsucker" allows for some breathing room before the band embarks on the album's epic, ten-minute tour de force "Child in Time." In what is arguably his greatest performance, singer Ian Gillan leads the band on a series of crescendos, from the song's gentle beginning through to its ear-shattering climax, and back again to an even more intense encore. With searing power chords, "Flight of the Rat" is another example of the band's new hard-rock stance; though at nearly eight minutes, it too finds room for some extended soloing from Blackmore and Lord. "Into the Fire" and "Living Wreck" are more concise but equally appealing, and despite the closer "Hard Lovin' Man," which waffles on a bit before descending into feedback, this is still an essential album.

Syd Barrett - Barrett (1970)



On his second solo album, Barrett was joined by Humble Pie drummer Jerry Shirley and Pink Floyd members Rick Wright (organ) and Dave Gilmour (guitar). Gilmour and Wright acted as producers as well. Instrumentally, the result is a bit fuller and smoother than the first album, although it's since been revealed that Gilmour and Wright embellished these songs as best they could without much involvement from Barrett, who was often unable or unwilling to perfect his performance. The songs, however, are just as fractured as on his debut, if not more so. "Baby Lemonade," "Gigolo Aunt," and the nursery rhyming "Effervescing Elephant" rank among his peppiest and best-loved tunes. Elsewhere, the tone is darker and more meandering. It was regarded as something of a charming but unfocused throwaway at the time of its release, but Barrett's singularly whimsical and unsettling vision holds up well.

Queen - Queen II(1974)



Queen's second album, 1974's Queen II, is their heaviest and also darkest release. Upset by the lashing the critics bestowed upon their underrated self-titled debut a year earlier (and its underachieving chart performance), the band were determined to hit the big time with their second try. And succeed they did -- the album reached number five on the U.K. charts, while its breakthrough single, "Seven Seas of Rhye," reached number ten. The band also created a buzz stateside by opening a tour for Mott the Hoople, and in return received FM radio support. The first side of the record was titled the "white" side, while the second was the "black" side; still, both include an equal amount of rockers and ballads. Opening with the lush guitar orchestration of Brian May's "Procession," the album kicks into high gear with one of Queen's most underrated tracks, the haunting "Father to Son." Like the debut, the album switches from style to style throughout ballads ("White Queen," "Nevermore"), pop ("Some Day One Day"), heavy metal ("Ogre Battle," "Seven Seas of Rhye"), and mutated prog rock ("The March of the Black Queen," "The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke"). A stellar release that has only improved over the years, Queen II also proved to be an influential album for future musicians -- Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan considers it an all-time personal favorite.

Queen - Queen(1973)



Although it may not be up to par with such future classics as A Night at the Opera and The Game, Queen's 1973 self-titled debut is one of the most underrated hard rock debuts of all time. Chances are that many will only be familiar with one song (the classic rock radio staple "Keep Yourself Alive"), but it is a very consistent and solid album; even the more uncommon compositions are impressive and memorable. Unlike other notable hard rock debuts of the '60s/'70s (Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Kiss, etc.), Queen's first album was not recorded quickly, but over the course of a year or two, since the band had to record during the studio's off hours to minimize costs. Even so, the album does retain continuity, a perfect balance of anthems (the aforementioned "Keep Yourself Alive"), gorgeous ballads ("The Night Comes Down," "Doing All Right"), and raging heavy metal ("Liar," "Great King Rat," "Son & Daughter"). All of the band's future musical trademarks can be detected here as well -- Brian May's sweeping guitar orchestras (several different guitars overdubbed to create harmonies), Freddie Mercury's vocal acrobatics, and the solid rhythm section of drummer Roger Taylor and bassist John Deacon (listed as Deacon John in the credits here). At the time, many critics dismissed the band and the debut (unfairly classifying Queen as "disposable glam"), but in hindsight, Queen laid down the groundwork for this legendary band's future triumphs.
