Up until Gary Numan I associated synthesisers with either art/prog rock bands, disco or spaced out funk made by PaliamentFunkadelic.
This album changed all that.
After hearing the song Cars on the radio and then seeing the video on tv I HAD to have this album. Gary Numan was too strange for me not to like and this album is what got me into electronic music.
Like the previous album Replicas, The Pleasure Principle's feel is cold,emotionless and even more robotic sounding, but a lot more dancey. Drummer Cedric Sharpley and bassist Paul Gardiner made an incredible rythm section. Listen to Airlane, Metal, Films, Observer, and of course Cars and tell me you won't want to move! Nearly all the songs on the album features the soaring string synth sound and the distorted bass synth sounds. I have to admit listening to it now, those two particular sounds seem a bit overused. There are no guitars on the album...Numan was out to show that synths could stand on their own.
The ballad Complex is hauntingly beautiful with it's eerie soaring synths and violin(viola?). I even detect a bit of emotion in Numan's voice toward the end. The M.E. is great but tends to get a bit tedious as does the Conversation. Conversation does feature some interesting violin/viola by Rrussell Bell or Billy Currie...or perhaps both?
Engineers features a marching drum beat with machine like noises in sync.
Also included are some instrumentals and some live tracks which are also included on Living Ornaments79. You get a lot for your money on this cd.
The Pleasure Priciple is what opened my ears to other great electronic artists like Kraftwerk,Ultravox, John Foxx, Visage, The Human League, OMD and so many others.
This is truly an electro classic, get it.

Like a mink draped over mahogany, Diana Krall's luxuriously supple alto adorns the vintage songs of romance and longing found on Love Scenes with a palpable aura of glamour and late-night cool. Her ostensibly effortless command of phrasing and intonation, whether the mood is seduction or a sweet sassiness, further fortifies the opinion that the Canadian vocalist-pianist possesses one of the great female jazz voices to surface in the late 1990s. Augmented by spare but skillful instrumentation from bassist Christian McBride and guitarist Russell Malone, Krall sustains a largely quiet (though hardly sleepy) ambience throughout the CD's 12 selections, from Irving Berlin's "How Deep Is the Ocean (How High Is the Sky)," which she also uses as a showcase for her touch at the keyboard, to Gershwin's "They Can't Take That Away from Me." Her swing is artfully subdued ("All or Nothing at All"), and her wry, expressive approach to "Peel Me a Grape" is pure charm. Yet Krall shines most luminously on languid gems such as "I Don't Stand a Ghost of a Chance with You" and "Garden in the Rain." Anyone in search of an album ideal for watching city lights at 2 a.m. should keep Love Scenes in mind.

Ollie Teeba and Jake Wherry return with The Herbaliser's fifth studio-album. The dark and moody 'Something Wicked This Way Comes' was a bit of a stagnation with no real highlights (except for the mindblowing artwork), but 'Take London' sees them return in full musical shape. Tight funk (p-funky in 'Gadget Funk' and with full-on wah-wah-injections in 'Kittynapper'), chase scene jazz (the beautiful 'Geddim'') and epic pieces are mixed with dope b-boy tracks. Jean Grae (formerly known as What What) makes a welcome return, contributing to four tracks including sweet future single 'Close Your Eyes'. Roots Manuva and Nottingham's Cappo hold op the UK end on the mic.

Ry Cooder - Buena Vista Social Club (1997)

Ry Cooder's name has helped bring attention to this session, but it's the veteran Cuban son musicians who make this album really special. Reminiscent of Ellington in its scope and sense of hushed romanticism, Buena Vista Social Club is that rare meld of quietude and intensity; while the players sound laid-back, they're putting forth very alive music, a reminder that aging doesn't mean taking to bed. Barbarito Torres's laoud solo on "El Cuarto de Tula" is both more blinding and more tasteful than any guitar showcase on any recent rock album; a quote from "Stormy Weather" and some very distinct parallels to Hawaiian styles remind us of why it's called "world music."

Fantastic 4-CD set that captures 4 live sets of the group at their best.  I am a big fan of these guys for so many reasons. Its minimal, it puts me in a trance, and in a live setting its totally improvised which I respect immensely.  Whenever someone asks me for good Australian music I tell them about the Necks.

Howard Shore & Ornette Coleman - Naked Lunch: Music From The Original Soundtrack

Howard Shore again masters the mood with this foray into the seamy underworld of William Burroughs. In this story about a place called Interzone, full of sinister centipedes and slimy "mugwumps," there is nothing better at giving listeners the creepy-crawlies than the depressing styles of what many could instantly identify as "beatnik" jazz. This is the music Burroughs and cronies like Allen Ginsberg cultivated to forge an anti-white-bread counterculture that was Ozzie and Harriet's worst nightmare. Shore re-creates this music as Ward Cleaver might have heard it way back when. To be even more authentic to the period, he collaborates with Ornette Coleman and also incorporates the Thelonious Monk composition "Misterioso." This soundtrack's best moments, however, occur when Shore drops the beat pose and just shines darkly.

Bug music! At the time of its 1992 release, this soundtrack to David Cronenberg's adaptation of William S. Burrough's phantasmagorical beat epic marked a slight return from what had been a long layoff for Ornette Coleman. The saxophonist was an inspired choice for the film, which, among other things, follows an erstwhile exterminator's journey from New York City to Tangiers. The soundtrack parallels Coleman's own travels as well: symphonic collaborations and Third Stream evocations, melodic and furious "free jazz" sorties, and meetings with masters of ecstatic North African traditional music.

The album's mood is best described by the Monk tune "Misterioso," which Coleman covers, perfectly underscoring the film's sense of altered reality (typewriters morphing into giant, squishy talking insects and the like) and narcotics-enhanced paranoia. Shore's score more than stands on its own, apart from the Coleman interludes, full of vaguely ominous shadings that avoid the usual noir clichés. The closing track, "Writeman," is Ornette in full-on, bustling trio form, with a striking solo intro from bassist Barre Phillips.
