Victor Bailey - Low Blow (1999)

Remember way back in 1981, when skinny, Berklee-trained chopsmeister Victor Bailey took on the unenviable task of following the mighty Jaco Pastorius into Weather Report? The Philly-born musician - deeply influenced by Jaco, Stanley Clarke, and funk master Larry Graham - duly played like a mofo rising. Too bad Wayne Shorter and Joe Zawinul shifted into cruise control for the fusion band's final four records.
Nearly two decades later, and after countless mundane big-money gigs (i.e., Madonna, Mary J. Blige, the smooth-jazz brigade), the bassist gets his biggest artistic boost from the still effervescent spirit of Jaco, who died in 1987. Case in point: "Do You Know Who/Continuum," the soulful, haunting centerpiece of Bailey's first solo album since 1989's Bottom's Up. Bailey transcribed this Pastorius tune at age 16 and here retrofits its curious zigs and zags with lyrics that handily convey the impact of his early encounter with Jaco. "I've got to admit I was blown away / by the sound of his heart," Bailey sings, above his own four-string and overdubbed keyboards and the drumming of former Weather Report cohort Omar Hakim. "And it tore me apart / yet it gave me a brand-new start." It's a risky move that results in one of the smartest, sweetest, most moving of all tributes to the fallen genius.

Jaco also lurks in the grooves and moves of the title track, a chattering piece of fretboard frenzy, with Hakim and guitarist Wayne Krantz, that might have been inspired by "Teen Town." "Graham Cracker," a slap-and-tickle salute to the Graham Central Station dynamo, benefits from Kenny Garrett's righteous soprano sax. And "Baby Talk," a leisurely ballad, has the leader taking a straightahead stroll with drummer Dennis Chambers and pianist Jim Beard. Bailey, on the slow-funk turn "Feels Like a Hug" and practically everywhere else, blows like you knew he could and you hoped he would.

Victor Bailey - That's Right (2001)

As an original member of both Joe Zawinul's Zawinul Syndicate and Ramsey Lewis's Urban Knights, bassist Victor Bailey has played both contemporary jazz with a rock edge and R&B-laced jazz. On this nine-track disc, he straddles both worlds quite effectively. Besides a totally out-of-place and somewhat self-indulgent vocal piece titled "Where's Paco," this is a solid program of post-fusion music. 
The Parliament/Funkadelic medley of "(Not Just) Knee Deep" and "One Nation Under a Groove," and the catchy "Rope-a-Dope" are great examples of progressive 21st-century jazz-funk, while guitarist Dean Brown, and especially keyboardist Jim Beard--who's a revelation throughout the proceedings--shine brightly in blistering solos that emphasize the rock in jazz-rock fusion. Underrated reedman Bennie Maupin also appears on two tracks. He plays the kind of lines on his bass clarinet that he did with Herbie Hancock's Headhunters in the '70's on a hot tune he wrote called "Steamy," switching to tenor sax on the title track, which closes the album. Despite the firepower of his guests, Bailey's bass isn't overshadowed at all.

Considering Victor Bailey is one of the most ubiquitous sidemen on the music scene, you might think he'd seize the opportunity to proclaim his individual identity as a bassist on his third solo album, That's Right! Well, not exactly. That's Right! is not a "bass" album, per se, but rather a solid collection of funk-fusion tunes that spotlight the former Weather Report bassist's multiple gifts as a composer, musician, arranger and leader.

While That's Right! is clearly Bailey's album-he composed most of the tracks and infectious grooves prevail-the recording is a group effort. And what a group! Bailey enlisted drummers Omar Hakim and Lenny White, saxophonist Bill Evans, saxophonist/bass clarinetist Bennie Maupin, keyboardist Jim Beard and guitarist Dean ...

Its a superb bassistic album - thumpy grooves, busting melodies, but moreover its a really good CD : Johnsons skills as a composer are good. Its not just another virtuoso who shows us what he can do, but real good music. And, finally, the sound is nice ! If you play bass, its a must-have (lotta good ideas in there). If you dont, I guess it would yet fit very well in your CD collection !

...if you love jazz, electric jazz, fusion, hard fusion, jazz/funky rhythms, electric distorted guitars, amazing bass compings, fantastic creative drum works, stellar fusion compositions you can't lose this album. Musicianship all around this album is amazing, interplay is at the maximum level. Thil double live album could outplay every fusion live album ever recorded in my opinion. Probably only Frank Gambale Live could be compared. This album is perhaps a less blowing session than Frank's live album but a lot better in terms of general musical value. If you are considering to buy Vital Information recent double live album do yourself a favour. Bypass the VI album and buy this one. Absolutly!! This is an immortal recording for the fusion enthusiast.

Leo Kottke - A Shout Toward Noon (1990)

 Leo "Machine Gun" Kottke became famous for his demonically fast, propulsively rocking, and perhaps divinely inspired guitar playing. Sidelined in the early '80s with hand problems related to his strenuous style, he offers up a quieter, more reflective side in A SHOUT TOWARDS NOON. As the acknowledged master of six- and 12-string strut and slide, he has nothing to prove here. 
 Kottke tends to linger over the sonorities of his six-string--check out the pitch-bend on the harmonic at the end of "Easter Again." The pieces bloom and die in a zen-like calm, supported here and there by Buell Neidlinger's cello and Randy Kerber's keyboards. But with "Airproofing Two," a full-tilt reprise of his hit from the album LEO KOTTKE, Kottke proves he's still got it. Suddenly winter's over, it's the Fourth of July, and we're on the fireworks barge, until languor and melancholy reappear with "A Virtuoso Is His Own Reward," and the strange, nocturnal "The Ice Field." Kottke's mastery is made all the more evident in these quieter settings; his restrained chord work on the closer, "First to Go," evokes an aching loveliness that no amount of machine-gunning could achieve.

Some 35 years into his recording career, acoustic guitar virtuoso Leo Kottke seems none the worse for the wear on TRY AND STOP ME. As on his previous solo album, 1999's efficiently titled ONE GUITAR, NO VOCALS, Kottke is back to his roots in solo-guitar instrumental compositions. Simultaneously angular and inviting, knotty and amiable, the tunes completely sidestep the preciousness inherent in the work of so many of Kottke's peers. Instead, his combination of country and folk picking techniques, jazz, rock, and world music song structures, and bluesy feel seems as individual as it is unpretentious. Kottke's playing is alternately rhythmic ("Bristol Sloth") and rubato ("Jesus Maria"), challenging ("Monopoly") and lyrical ("Mockingbird Hill"). For a change of pace, the album closes with a bluesy vocal tune, "The Banks of Marble," where Kottke's trademark baritone warble is accompanied by surprise guests Los Lobos.

Snoop Dogg - R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece (2004)

Considering that most Golden Era rap talents birthed by Dr. Dre have ridden off into the sunset--or are simply much less active and relevant in 2004--it's somewhat surprising that Snoop keeps churning out the hits like it was 1993. Make no mistake, Snoop's raps are still very much gangsta, as the title of the disc implies and as "Bang Out" clearly outlines. They're just a bit more adult-contemporary gangsta now. Despite the heavy pro-pimp overtones, the Doggfather's smoothed-out timbre and flow mask the harshness of his regressive views. The exceptional production throughout is highlighted by the Neptunes' contributions, from the catchy, minimalist "Drop It Like It's Hot" all the way to the '80s retro-funk jam "Let's Get Blown." Steady vocal contributions from funk stalwart Charlie Wilson (Gap Band) and 50 Cent, and nasty beats supplied by everyone from the Alchemist to Hi-Tek put this one over the top

The London-based trio Placebo carries on the modern-rock banner with this third collection of glam-influenced guitar pop. Black Market Music may not contain anything as immediately catchy as Without You I'm Nothing's "Pure Morning," but the dark hooks of "Taste in Men," "Special K," and "Slave to the Wage," with its Pavement sample, sink in deep after just a few listens. "Spite and Malice," featuring a guest turn from One Inch Punch rapper Justin Warfield, is a surprisingly successful marriage of Britpop and hip-hop, while the moody drone of "Passive Aggressive" showcases the band's more reflective side. And while songs about tumors and hemoglobin threaten to close the album on a lyrically bleak note, two bonus cuts change the mood: a reprise of Without You I'm Nothing's title track with Brian Molko's hero David Bowie joining in on vocals, and a cover of Depeche Mode's "I Feel You." Black Market Music isn't exactly the feel-good album of 2001, but it gives hope to those who still have faith in the future of Britpop.

Placebo - Sleeping With Ghosts (2003)

Sex and drugs and rock & roll have figured prominently in Placebo's glitterered-up, androgynous music. Sleeping with Ghosts is a little more coy than past recordings, dealing more with the torturous psychological aspects of relationships than with the exchange of body fluids. Not that there isn't any room for fetishism. "This Picture," for example, apparently dwells on sado-masochism and comes over as just the sort of trash-glam pop stomp once associated with Suede. "The Bitter End" ("Since we're feeling so anaesthatized") is a big, bruising, fatalistic rocker. At times it's hard to tell whether Brian Molko is repulsed or perversely inspired by his subject matter, although he's definitely bored with the bloody weather (the cheerless "English Summer Rain" is a subdued pop tune driven by rhythmic electronic jolts) and the waltz- time, Doors-influenced "Protect Me from What I Want" finds him praying to be delivered from his own personal temptations. Sleeping with Ghosts, however, is as much an album for slam-dancing nights out at Goth haunts as it is music for the psychiatrist’s couch.

Placebo - Without You I'm Nothing (1998)

This U.K. three-piece's self-titled debut often got compared to Smashing Pumpkins and Rush--Smashing Pumpkins for its unashamed mid-'70s prog-rock allusions and Rush because of singer Brian Molko's unusually high-pitched, almost androgynous voice. In reality, Placebo were far more salacious, downright dirty, and culturally confusing than either. (The band is a mix of American, Swedish, and English, with some Lebanese and Luxembourgian thrown in.) For their second album, Placebo have looked to the late '70s for inspiration, to the sound of early New Order and the Banshees--with a dash of the '90s thrown in: "Brick Shithouse," for example, starts like the most balls-out Prodigy song. If their debut was the sound of a no-holds-barred sexual drug frenzy lasting way into the next day, then Without You I'm Nothing is the resultant rumpled, libidinous comedown. As such, it's much classier, cerebral and great to listen to when hung-over. "I'm unclean / A libertine / And every time you vent your spleen / I seem to lose my power of speech," Molko breathes on the awesomely overcharged title track. In a year when Marilyn Manson and Bauhaus continue to revitalize the goth movement across America, Placebo's moment may well have arrived.
