Album is the laibachian interpretation of Johann Sebastian Bach's work The Art of Fugue (Die Kunst der Fuge). The majority of the material has been created already in 2006 and premierly performed the same year on June the 1st at Bachfest in Leipzig.

Bach himself lived and worked in Leipzig from 1723 till the end of his life in 1750. In this period he also wrote the Art of Fugue, one of his most mysterious and baffling works. The Art of Fugue is a collection of fugues and canons that display the full gamut of fugal transformational techniques, such as augmentation and diminution. The theory that the work was intended as an intellectual exercise rather than for performance is borne out by the fact that no instruments are specified in the score. But although the Art of Fugue (the title was not Bach's own) reveals Bach in his most academic and puzzle-solving guise, it is no mere pedantry and there is much here of great energy and inspiration. Since Bach did not specify any instrumentation, the big question is: what instrument or instruments should the Art of Fugue be played on? There are many keyboard recordings, but versions are available for everything from saxophone quartet to orchestra. Since the work is very much based on mathematic algorithms, Laibach decided to use computer and computer program as the key »instrument«, providing a very special electronic interpretation and showing that J.S. Bach with his work could as well be understood as the pioneer of electronic, techno, computer music.
LAIBACHKUNSTDERFUGE is available as digital download at MUTE (EMI), and as a CD record, released by Dallas Records.

Laibach is a Slovenian experimental music group, strongly associated with industrial, martial, and neo-classical. Laibach formed June 1, 1980 in Trbovlje, Slovenia. Laibach represents the music wing of the Neue Slowenische Kunst (NSK) art collective, of which it was a founding member in 1984. The name "Laibach" is the German name for Slovenia's capital city, Ljubljana.

A must-hear release, perhaps the best of Laibach's 'pop' records.

VOLK is a collection of interpretations of national anthems and beside others it also includes the transnational anthem of NSK State in time. All other tracks are based on and inspired by original anthems. The opening track, Germania uses Das Lied der Deutschen, originally written in 1797 and used after World War I as the national anthem of the German Empire at the time of the Weimar Republic, while the single, Anglia, uses John Bull’s God Save the Queen/King as its inspiration. The tracks are mostly sung in English but each song has a guest singer, often singing in his national language.
Laibach created this record in collaboration with Boris Benko and Primož Hladnik - both members of Ljubljana music group Silence and they co-produced and co-write the project. Boris Benko also created vocal interpretations and arrangements on several songs.
The album is released as a standard CD with 16 page booklet with lyrics and illustrations and also in a limited edition hardback book format with watercolour artwork by Laibach in a 32 page booklet with sleeve notes explaining each track.

Live album of an early configuration of this mighty Slovene industrial band that - while recorded in 1984, didn't see release until 1997. It's also one - like their debut album on Ropot (Noise) - that featured the band's appropriation of a Malevich cross as a logo rather than their name, due to a government ban on the name Laibach. Noisy and chaotic, most instrumentation consists of heavy martial drumming, metal percussion, electronic sirens and hunter's horns. many songs follow the almost ritualistic form of Ti, Ki Izzivas (You, Who Are Challenging), with pounding drums and Fras' bellowing, bottomless pit incantations. At times the proceedings approach free-jazz - save for the heavy, industrial pounding and metal-on-metal sturm und drang.

LJUBLJANA-ZAGREB-BEGRAD is a mostly live document of Laibach's first tour in 1982. The band was formed in Ljubljana, the capitol of what is now Slovenia, and this tour featured shows in the three titular Yugoslavian cities. Given Laibach's penchant for mocking political institutions--occasionally going so far as to perform in fascistic regalia--It should come as no surprise that government interference plagued the tour.

From the opening, Laibach demands acknowledgement that something larger than just music is going on here. The lyrics of "Svoboda" conclude with "The authority has / in the year 1982 / cancelled / freedom." At this early stage, Laibach's music featured heavily distorted bass guitar, very loud primitive synthesizers designed to deliver jolts of phased feedback and screeches, martial drumming, and the speech-like pronouncements of Thomaz Hostnik. "Unsere Geschichte," a scratchy recording of a '40s-style easy-listening record, merges into the ear-splitting feedback twitter of "Rdeci Molk." Laibach's odd, occasionally hyperactive take on the industrial sound pioneered by the like-minded Throbbing Gristle is not for the faint of heart.

Although Laibach have released over 14 albums (6 of them big sellers here in the States for Mute Records), this, their very first full-length studio recording made in Yugoslavia in 1985 had never been available to their fans here before except as a limited edition hard-to-find and expensive import. Originally issued in Yugoslavia by SKUC (Student Cultural Centre Slovenia) and recorded at the Metro Studio, Slovenia. It has been licensed from their 1st manager, Igor Vidmar, and his Repot Record Co.

A thundering return to form by the zany Slovenian funsters. If Laibach's initial response to the destruction of Yugoslavia--1992's Kapital album--had been disappointingly obtuse (even by Laibach's formidable standards) and altogether disappointing, Nato more than makes up for it: it is all at once their most startling, powerful, hilarious (though whether or not this is intentional remains, as ever, a moot point) and strangely moving work. The CD booklet--usually employed by Laibach as a repository of eerie, Nazi-esque visuals or frankly incomprehensible political manifestos--this time contains no more than the preamble of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation's constitution: "NATO is the framework for an alliance designed to prevent aggression or to repel it, should it occur. It is determined to safeguard freedom, common heritage and civilisation". In the context of the time--this, remember, was a year before NATO's aircraft put a criminally overdue stop to the siege of Sarajevo--it is exquisitely damning. Nato itself is a collection of cover versions, each rendered in the traditional Laibach style--that is, as a turbo-charged Bavarian marching song, delivered with gruff, undeniably Germanic vocals and embellished with electronic squiggles and eerie choirs of valkyries. The songs chosen include Edwin Starr's "War", Status Quo's "In The Army Now", Pink Floyd's "Dogs Of War" and, most gloriously, Europe's "The Final Countdown". The latter is souped up to sound like either or both the national anthem of some ghastly, institutionally moronic future European super-state, and an appropriately, extravagantly foolish lament to the extravagantly foolish fate that befell their homeland.

The album features eight songs and the instrumental coda "Deus Ex Machina", among them original Laibach takes of Juno Reactor's as-yet-unreleased "God Is God", the Lloyd Webber musical hit "Jesus Christ Superstar" and the Artist Formerly Known as Prince's "The Cross". The other tracks are Laibach's own "Kingdom Of God", "Abuse And Confession", "Declaration Of Freedom", "Message From The Black Star" and "To The New Light".

Because the original Laibach covers serve as the coordinates to the album, an understanding of their sources can only enhance your enjoyment and understanding of them. "Jesus Christ Superstar" is taken from the rock musical that echoed John Lennon's claim of the Beatles being more popular than Jesus. It cast a clean-cut Jim Morrison type as Christ and played out his story against the peace concerns the Vietnam war period. That its social impact outweighed its musical value could be ascribed to its meeting the religious needs of an audience unsatisfied by conventional religions. Laibach use it today as a vehicle to explore the way rock had absorbed Hollywood's idea of Christian values. TAFKAP's "The Cross" marks rock's fusion of religious sexuality, metal guitar and its gospel roots.

The Laibach originals analyse the search for spiritual solace in an a world that has either pronounced God dead or persists in using religion to cynically seek forgiveness for its sins without being prepared to give them up.

With "Jesus Christ Superstars", they continue God's work, begun on earlier albums like "Opus Dei".
