Rural Tourism in Novo Brdo
Early History
Based on many historical sources, the territory of the municipality of Novo Brdo has been populated since the early signs of human kind. Novo Brdo becomes an important centre especially in the medieval period when mining was developing rapidly. According to some records, in the XV century, Novo Brdo had 45,000 inhabitants. The culmination of economic and political development was reached with the development of the Mine of Novobërdë which was very rich in minerals of gold, silver, lead and zinc. According to some records from that period, in 1450 The Mine of Novo Brdo used to produce around 6,000 kgs of silver per year. The wealth of the mine which was the most known mine in the Europe at that time was used by various empires such as the Roman, Byzantine and Turkish Empire. At that time, Novo Brdo had its factory of coins and jewelry made of gold and silver.

Archeological Remains
These periods of existence of the town have left many archaeological vestiges. In order to protect the monuments of Novo Brdo, in 1994, the Institute for Protection of Historic Monuments made a topographic determination of the location of the medieval town and archaeological localities around town. Apart from the medieval castle other dwellings were included in a territory of around 130 hectares such as; cult buildings, religious buildings, cemeteries, furnace for melting ore etc. Construction or digging in the territory of around 130 ha, and in the vicinity of the castleis forbidden (based on the special law for protective zones).

Activities
Hiking, Mountainbiking or just relaxing and breathing fresh air

Fresh - You can rent mountain bikes and the necessary saftey equipment including helmets through the Touristic Information Centre in Bostane. Fadil and his assistans will also be able to give you tips for popular hiking-routes. A popular choice with first time visitors is the tour of Nove Brdo and the surrounding villages with the local professional guide. He'll tell you everything about the rich history of the region, the development of Novo Brdo as a centre of trade and the importance if the region now.
Action - Soon there will be Quads available for rent with all the necessary equipment. The gavel roads make a great terrain for using one of these four-wheelers to explore the region. Alternatively you can sign up for a round or an afternoon of paintball.
Farming - visit cattle farms or go picking mushrooms and herbs with local guides. Depending on the season we can arrange for you to join local farmers picking strawberries and taking the home with you. Alternatively you can assist in jam making, soap making with the local women association or make some rakjia as a present for your family or your friends at home.
I want to ride my bicycle - I want to rent a bike
For just 10 Euros a day you can rent a proper alpina-mountainbike at through local Touristic Information Centre in Bostane. At the moment five bikes are available with helmets and protection gear. The hilly area of Novo Brdo offers both attractive routes for more professional mountain-bikers as well as some easier routes of around five to ten kilometers for beginners. Bedna (picture below) will welcome you, explain you how to use the bikes and where to start your exploration of Novo Brdo on the bike.

You want to hear about Novo Brdo? This is the man who knows it all. Stories told over centuries, from grandfathers to fathers, from fathers to sons. Fitim is a sheer foutain of knowledge about everything in and around Novo Brdo. He currently works as an english-teacher and likes to play the drums, but most of all he likes to take around visitors in Novo Brdo and enlighten them with his knowledge.
He speaks Albanian, English, Serbo-Croatian and Russian and has recently guided a couple of school groups around the fortress. "Being a guide is not a job - it's a passion", he says answering all the questions you could possibly have.

Hiking - The green lung of Kosovo
The hilly area of Novo Brdo offers various pleasant walks. A good starting point for any expedition could be the local Touristic Information Centre or any accomodation or catering household of the project. Be sure to contact Fadil who can give you an insight on various short or long walk in the fresh air. Hiking here is pleasant at all times - even during the winter.

Paintball - overseen by the Head of the local Hunting Association
You are assured a warm and heartly welcome when you go to play a round of paintball in Bunjac. The Bunjaku family with all their children - eight klix and four boys - will take good care of you. Nasmiu - the Head of the local Hunting Association - will instruct you on all saftey issues.
You can also definitely expect a big hug of the matron of the house (see picture).

For the younger ones or for those who still feel young: dart, table tennis and billard
The Culture House Novo Brdo in the Old Colony offers three leisure time activities. You can play billard, table tennis or dart. This is great for younger people spending a weekend or more in the region.
