Dear Editors of Counter Punch,

With this letter, I would like to show my repulsion and my utter disgust at your willingness to publish a story filled with racist remarks bordering on religious and cultural prejudice.

I am outraged that the paper by Diana Johnstone published on Oct 12, 2005 under the title “Using War for more War, Srebrenica Revisited” would receive the approval of your editors as a story that should be placed in a position where the public would have access to view this fictitious, disrespectful, and quite degrading article, which would inevitably lead to a misrepresentation and hence discrimination towards a people.

Since the World War II, I have believed that the generation of fictitious facts and the degradation of “ethnical cleansing” events are outlawed. Having read about the incarceration of people spreading Nazi propaganda denying the Holocaust ever happened, I had assumed that editors of major publications – online or paper – such as your magazine, would screen articles for the spread of hate propaganda. The denial of the horrific mass murder at Srebrenica not only defies the facts; it depicts the Bosnian people – counting Serbs, Croats, Muslims and Jews – as an attention seeking, deceitful nation. The whole world has witnessed the removal of the bodies in Srebrenica, and the whole world has decided that genocides such as that should never occur again.

As I was reading Ms. Johnstone’s article, I was trying to understand her trail of thought and reason. The murder of innocent people should never be forgotten, nor should the murder of a certain nation be elevated and “glorified”, a word that should never be used to describe murder. However, the reason for the “glorification” of the Srebrenica massacre was due to the fact that the Srebrenica massacre happened in 1994, a time of political reform in Europe, a time where the world was sure that mass murder of those proportions was history, placed away at the memorials of Auschwitz, Dachau and Buchenwald. However, this was not the case, and the Srebrenica massacre will for ever go down in history as a massacre that could and SHOULD have been prevented. A massacre that the world has promised would never occur again.

I am not denying the existence of concentration camps operated by all sides, but am repulsed that the memories of the lives of the Srebrenica massacre’s victims – counting boys, adults, and seniors – would be so vulgarly stepped upon. Let the mothers, wives, daughters and sisters, survivors, of the Srebrenica massacre be remembered like the survivors of the Jewish Massacres. They should be remembered as fighters, and not as attention seekers. The Srebrenica massacre had nothing to do with concentration camps, and the victims cannot in any shape, or form be described as a “casualties of war”. The deliberate, brutal extermination of these Bosniaks cannot be filed in the same file as the Vietnam War, nor the current Iraqi war as Ms. Johnstone suggests, since those were not part of an ethnical cleansing, like the Srebrenica massacre was, and like the anti-Semitist actions of Nazi Germany were.

The undersigned ask that the article be removed at once from your website in the memory of the fallen, in the memory of the survivors, and in the memory of everyone that has lost anyone in that horrific, brutal massacre. The world has pledged NEVER to FORGET. Therefore let us remember…

I did send a message to the author:
Dear Ms Johnstone:

I've read the above article in Counterpunch.org dated October 12.

I was not in Bosnia during the war and neither were you in Srebrenica 1995. At the same time, I am not a moslem but a Serbian.

Your article leaves many things that may be reconsidered as the complete truth about Srebrenica will never be known.

However, I have a serious disagreement with your writing covering missing 8000 adult males in Srebrenica. You believe the number of missing is closer to 3000. You are even trying to link some references to wrong estimates of dead in New York after the 9/11.

Well, we all know that Srebrenica is not New York. It is a small town where a difference of 5000 missing people would be easy to notice and confirm. The Dutch peacekeeping contingent was there at the time and no one of them ever mentioned that only about 3000 local males met Mladic's forces. If you are standing at 3000 dead and 5000 "went somewhere," how come that they did not return home by now, wrote to their families back in Srebrenica, or tried to contact the families by any other way? Have you ever tried to follow their disappearance and where are they today--even for just one of them?

At the same time, you probably wouldn't believe in "collective amnesia" of 5000 people, wouldn't you?

At best, this part of writing is something I would call a "science of guessology," and at worst, an elaborate effort to "buy" the explanation from those who don't want the world to know the facts.

Sincerely,
mala_mina

Dear reader, who are "we" in this case? How in the world could "we" (you and I) have known or done anything about this at the time? And in fact, how much do "we" really know about it now?

Draga mino,

well written indeed, ali si i ti malo cinjenice pobrkala. Srebrenica se nije desila 1994, vec 1995.
