Taken from the soundtrack to the film "The Clash" by Julian Temple, recorded in Dunstable, March, 1977.

(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais
The Original version with alternate lyrics recorded at Marquee Studios, London, March, 1978.

Tommy Gun
The unbroadcast first take recorded for the 'Something Else' BBC TV Show in March, 1978.

Louie Louie
Recorded during the '16 Tons Tour' rehearsals in London, January, 1980, this was performed with Pete Townsend as the encore in Brighton.

King Of The Road
During the aforementioned rehearsals Mick takes a cigarette break whilst Joe, Paul and Topper knock out this old classic.

English Civil War
The first of three songs recorded at Tyne Tees TV Studios in April, 1979 for the 'Alright Now' Show.

Hate & War
Mick takes up vocal duties for the second song of the show.

Israelites
Third and final song is a romp through the old reggae classic with Den Hagarty of 'The Darts' on backing vocals.

Dirty Harry
The original version of 'Magnificent Seven' taken from the early days of the Sandinista! sessions, New York, 1980, mixed by Mick.

Overpowered By Funk
The extended New York Remix by Mick Jones. Initial copies of 'Combat Rock' album were due a bonus 12" EP of remixes of which this was part.

The Further Adventures Of Futura 2000
The original demo version recorded at Ear Studios, London during September, 1981 and mixed by Mick Jones at the controls.

Heartbreak Hotel
Taken from the film soundtrack to 'Grutzi Elvis' and recorded at Vanilla Studios during the 'London Calling' demo sessions in spring 1979.

Blonde Rock And Roll
An unfinished song recorded during the Sandinista! album sessions and features Ellen Foley on backing vocals.

7" Interview Picture Disc - "Talking To 'The Clash'" [inc. artwork]

Contains an interview with Paul Simonon & Topper Headon, recorded sometime between November 24, 1978 (release of "Tommy Gun") and December 19, 1978 (Sid Vicious Benefit show).
The pictures, however, are ca. 1984-85 and show Joe & Paul on one side, and a head shot of Joe on the other. The same interview is on both sides of the disc.

Ellen Foley - Spirit of St Louis [1981]

"This is often known as the 'lost Clash album', seeing that it's basically performed by the Clash, with Ellen singing. Mick and Joe wrote half the songs. Album was produced by Mick Jones....After the recording sessions for the Clash's Sandinista LP were completed, the Sandinista band, consisting of Mick Jones, Micky Gallagher, Norman Watt-Roy, Topper Headon, Tymon Dogg, Paul Simonon, Joe Strummer, and Gary Barnacle went to work on tracks for this Ellen Foley solo album, titled "The Spirit Of St. Louis". Joe, Mick, and Tymon wrote a number of new tracks for the project, displaying a Jacques Brel influence, and other 50s French pop writers, suitable to Ellen's Glam-Rock singing style. Accordions, flutes and strings make their entrance while images of cafés, legionnaires, bicycles, and other European flavors fly about. Mick Jones, who was klix Ellen Foley at the time, really threw himself into the project, which represents some of his best playing of the 1980s, and many of the original songs are top-flight. "The Shuttered Palace" and "Theatre Of Cruelty" could have been good Linda Ronstadt or ABBA songs. Tymon's "Beautiful Waste Of Time" could have worked for Dionne Warwick between some 1960s Bacharach-David numbers. And two songs, "Torchlight" and "MPH" really would have been at home on a Clash record. "Torchlight" is a classic Joe-Mick call and response track that you can just imagine some South American arm of the Spartacist League adopting it as their anthem. And "MPH" would be a great Clampdown-like rocker if sung by Joe and Mick. Ellen's own Siouxsie-like "Phases Of Travel" is well-written, and Mick uses some great flange guitar on it..." - http://groovytunesday.com

No band embodies all the best aspects of British punk rock better than The Clash: fast and furious songs delivered like machine gun fire - check; politically volatile lyrics -double check; paramilitary-cum-bondage fashion - certainly in the early days; an incorporation of American R&B and Jamaican Dub and Reggae influences - eventually; working class attitude and a predilection for violence - definitely; recklessly fabulous live performances - like none other.

While others were busy nettling the establishment with vulgar behavior and cartoonish personas, The Clash gave the punk movement some focus for all its aggression. Songs like "White Riot" and "London's Burning" explicitly articulated a powerful dissatisfaction with such time-honored English institutions as class distinction and imperialism, creating a vibrant subgenre which continues to thrive 20 years after the band's dissolution.

From the "Pearl Harbor '79" Tour, their first in America, this show is vintage Clash. Guitars rattle and clang and drums and bass pound away in fist-pumping precision as Joe Strummer's slurred holler narrates the revolution. It's short and perfect, the way rock n' roll should be, and the crowd can't get enough.

Though they never achieved the same commercial success in the States that they enjoyed in the U.K., The Clash are probably the most influential punk band of their era. Whether to applaud them or berate them for spawning the likes of Rancid and Green Day is a matter of personal opinion, but their status as the originals is irrefutable.
