The album title came from an audience member who suggested "Flight of the Codeine Hippo" as a name for the title track. The band changed "codeine" to "cosmic" to avoid the drug association.
"The Star Spangled Banner" was arranged and recorded in response to the Gulf War.
"Jekyll and Hyde (and Ted and Alice)" refers to the novella The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde as well as the film Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice.

Banjo master Bela Fleck takes a time-out of sorts from the dizzying NewGrass/Jazz-Country-Funk fusion for which he has become famous and returns to his bluegrass roots. THE BLUEGRASS SESSIONS: TALES FROM THE ACOUSTIC PLANET, VOLUME 2 runs the gamut from the humorous, old-time "Polka on the Banjo" (lead vocal by John Hartford) to the straight-ahead bluegrass of "Ode to Earl" (Scruggs, that is, the legendary banjoist). In the mysterious and beautiful "Katmandu," the music of the hills of Kentucky meets that of the hills of Asia. "Spanish Point" is the most Flecktones-sounding tune. This album, which contains fine contributions from Tony Rice, Vassar Clements, and Jerry Douglas, should appeal to the more adventurous bluegrass fan.

OUTBOUND won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. "Zona Mona" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.

With OUTBOUND, Bela Fleck and his Flecktones blend their eclectic mix of high-energy bluegrass and jazz with instrumentalists and vocalists from a wide range of styles. Among these are B3 master John Medeski, eclectic guitarist Adrian Belew, and pop vocalists Shawn Colvin and Yes' Jon Anderson. As you may expect, this makes for some of the most unique aural adventures to come down the pike in a long while.

With a nod to Oliver Nelson's BLUES & THE ABSTRACT TRUTH arrangement, Fleck offers a contemporary take on Aaron Copland's "Hoedown." He then launches into the intriguing "A Moment So Close," which mixes urban funk, Middle Eastern flavors, and contemporary pop vocals. If that's not enough to strip your gears, Adrian Belew's space-age guitar textures and Shawn Colvin's wordless vocal introduction into the otherwise rolling groove of "Hall of Mirrors" are likely to make you sit up and take immediate notice. More evidence of Fleck's stylistic wizardry is the exciting "Ainum," a piece that, while at first appearing as merely a pop vocal, incorporates everything from bluegrass and jazz to Indian drumming and funk. Other mesmerizing musical escapades include the lilting "Lover's Leap," the fusion-esque title track, and the impenetrable "Scratch & Sniff."

Bela Fleck is one of the greatest five-string banjo players performing today. Beginning in the 1970s, he honed his lightning-fast chops performing bluegrass, then moved on to contemporary jazz and fusion sounds. With this album, he broadens his horizons once again by performing an entire program of classical music transcriptions. Reminiscent of classical guitar albums by John Williams (who makes a guest appearance here), the disc traverses a wide range of repertoire--from Chopin mazurkas to Bach's Two and Three Part Inventions. Throughout, Fleck displays a feathery touch on his banjo, and his instrument offers a pleasant, brassy tone with very little twang. The technique he displays on Perpetual Motion is astounding and a refreshing change of pace from the smooth grooves found on the banjoist's Flecktones recordings. The arrangements are generally minimalist and understated, but violinist Joshua Bell, bassist Edgar Meyer, mandolinist Chris Thile, and percussionist Evelyn Glennie join in on this groundbreaking disc. Bluegrass purists may be disappointed (this is a far cry from the free-spirited, folksy abandon found on Sony's Short Trip Home and Appalachian Journey CDs), but classical fans will be astounded by how perfectly natural Fleck's banjo sounds on these works.
