THE GREEN OUTDOOR PAGES

Stunningly Beautiful and Secretive Herzegovina
The children had fun this Saturday; Rakitnica welcomed them with its cooling waters, warm breezes and amazing energy. It just shows that the right kind of outdoor adventure can be equally relaxing for both parents and children. Keep your eyes on our schedule for more child friendly activities this summer.

This weekend we go into the canyons that penetrate deep into both Prenj and Cvrsnica. For the adventurous we have an extremely attractive two day trip to one of Herzegovina's rugged gems, the Cvrsnica Mountain Range. Unable to disappear for two days, join us instead on our beautiful and secretive canyon Bijela hike, or on our white shimmering riverbed hike along Diva Grabovica up to the 1,000 meter towering rock face of Veliki Kuk on Cvrsnica. What ever you decide these trips will leave you with a lasting impression of Herzegovina's rugged beauty.

So, come with us and you will not only be guaranteed a truly amazing and authentic experience, but you will also contribute to the responsible development of sustainable tourism here in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Those of you who are new to Green Visions, we have since 2000 been involved in the development of tourism here in Bosnia and Herzegovina. We work with both the government, international donors/agencies, local and international consultants/businesses and of course local communities in the areas of eco tourism, research, education, project management, and environmental protection. Your participation directly supports all our grassroots development activities. Call us if you would like to know more about our projects or visit our website for a complete overview of our activities.

Finally, do not forget, GV rents out its fully equipped cozy mountain hut (4 to 6 people) on Bjelasnica. For those of you interested in a quiet isolated week or weekend in the mountains, this is the place for you, your friends and family to recharge you energies (for more information on prices please see below)!

From all of us here at Green Visions have an inspiring week and see you soon.

This Week's Trips

DIVA GRABOVICA - VELIKI KUK (1-day)
PERIOD: Saturday 31 July, 2004
CATEGORY: Green Hike (low difficulty)
HIKING HOURS: 4
PRICE: 75 KM per person
DEPARTURE TIME: 08:00 AM
ESTIMATED TIME OF RETURN: 19:00 PM
WHAT TO BRING: Walking shoes, 1 liter of water, sunblock, hat, camera.
WHAT IS INCLUDED: transport from Sarajevo to location and back, coffee or tea, lunch and snacks, one fully-equipped and experienced guide

1-Day Trip: The mountain valley of Diva Grabovica is nested in the extraordinarily attractive environment in the heart of Cvrsnica Mountain (2228 m), right at the place where the Mediterranean climate comes across the rough alpine climate. The drive from Sarajevo takes a bit less than two hours.

Most of the journey we will trek through a dry sandy bed of an ancient Pleistocene's river that flew down from Cvrsnica's melting glaciers. There we are surrounded with the massive thousand meters high rock faces of Bijela and Mezica cliffs. From here we will venture below the cliffs of Mededi on Veliki Kuk with its overgrown hundred year old forests of endemic black pine trees, which hide numerous wild game. The silence of this pristine wilderness is interrupted only by the boom of the wind going through the tree crowns or by stones cracking under our feet. It is a tremendously peaceful place.

We'll break for lunch at the bivouac built as a starting point for those interested in climbing the sheer 1,000 m face of Velki Kuk. Enjoy the sights and sounds (or lack of). From the bivouac we'll take you up to a small hidden spring cascading down Veliki Kuk. On the way back from this enormous amphitheater, we enjoy the sight of the bold and attractive contours of Prenj Mountain that appear on the east horizon. This Green Hike is perfect for both the hiker and walker. It is a low level of difficulty with a high level of intensity.

THE ANCIENT FORESTS AND CLIFFS OF CVRSNICA (2-day)
PERIOD: Saturday to Sunday 31 July - 01 August, 2004
CATEGORY: Green Hike (medium to high difficulty)
WALKING HOURS: Saturday 5 hours, Sunday 7 hours
PRICE: 200 KM per person
DEPARTURE TIME: 08:00 AM
ESTIMATED TIME OF RETURN: 19:00 PM
WHAT TO BRING: Hiking Boots, 2 liters of water, rain gear, cap, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, torch, a dry change of clothes, and a fleece. Please contact us if you need any equipment.
WHAT IS INCLUDED: transport from Sarajevo to location and back, coffee or tea, all meals and snacks, one or two fully-equipped and experienced guides.

Day one: This is one of Green Visions' favorites. It's a great magical tour climbing through the ancient forests of Cvrsnica Mountain to Zljeb, and Tise...all the while trekking on King Karadordevic's old hunting trails. A hunting hut was built near the top for the King because he so fancied the rich wildlife the area had to offer. He 's dead now, but his trail is very much alive and we have been using it as much as possible.

We start our hike in the village of Diva Grabovica, an old Bosnian settlement at the base of Cvrsnica. From here we leisurely pace through closed beech-tree forests. It's a fairly sharp climb at times but truly stunning and refreshing. The trail head leads us to several natural springs, so water is nema problema. We'll climb up for 2.5 hours before reaching Zljeb the first of two mountain huts and its magnificent viewpoint shaded by old endemic black pines.

Here we'll do our famous lunch on a perch overlooking the largest rock face on the Balkan Peninsula @ over 1,000 meters. The peaks of Cvrsnica tower around us in every direction from this point. Mali and Veliki Medved sprout out in front, rock walls to our right, and the eagle eye peaks of Cvrsnica highest points just behind us to the right. The view is spectacular, and fit for a king and queen...

After an hour or so of soaking in the views we continue on up for another hour to the King's hut at Tise. After a strenuous hike up to the King's hut, you will be greeted by even more spectacular views. It is as if we are touching the heavens here, a place where we have in the past witnessed waterfalls of over 200 meters. Here we briefly rest before we head back down to the first hut for a star filled night out door on its balcony. Chances are that during the night we will spot the unexpected group of wild pigs and or wild goats.

Day two: The next day we start a fast paced 2.5 hour hike to Cvrsnica's Hajducka vrata and Trinjaca peak at 2045m. Swerving through rare Munika Pine trees and low Pine tree brush "Kleka" we reach what will be a fantastic view of Prenj, Vranica, Bjelasnica, Trebevic, Bitovnja, and Velez. Hajducka Vrata "the Rebels Door", a hollow rock formation resembling a door will provide you with an unforgettable view of Cvrsnica. After recharging our souls with summer's pleasant sun and quiet breeze we head back down to the village of Diva Grabovica, quietly contemplating about the beauty and silence we have just witnessed.

Are you up for a great adventure, fantastic peaks, rugged wilderness, and outdoor camping under Herzegovina's cool summer nights? If so reserve a place with us for yet another unforgettable Bosnian adventure.

CANYON BIJELA - PRENJ (1-day)
PERIOD: Sunday 01 August, 2004
CATEGORY: Green Hike (medium difficulty)
HIKING HOURS: 6 hours
PRICE: 75 KM
DEPARTURE TIME: 08:00 AM
ESTIMATED TIME OF RETURN: 19:00 PM
WHAT TO BRING: Sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots, daypack, 1.5 liter water bottle, rain gear, sun block, swimming gear. Please contact us if you need any equipment.
WHAT IS INCLUDED: transport from Sarajevo to location and back, coffee or tea, lunch and snacks, one fully-equipped and experienced guide

Day one: Canyon Bijela is a 2 hours drive away from Sarajevo on the road to Mostar. Our trail starts at one of the numerous "fjords" created by the rising waters of the Neretva and winds slowly up into one of Herzegovina's roughest canyons "Bijela". After 15 minutes following the small Bijela stream we cross over and start our slow but sure ascent up through the canyon. We follow an old trail used by villagers in the sixties and an occasional hunter. Parts of the trail might be overgrown, and adds to the adventure. The area is known for its land turtles, beautiful snakes and lizards. Bijela is a wild canyon hidden from the main road which few people ever visit. This makes it a truly special place with exquisite views of Prenj, Bosnia's Himalayas.

Our hike up the canyon will take us about 3 hours, ascending a little over 400 meters. It's refreshing and most of the time leads us through thick beach wood and Bream forests. All along the trail we see remains of a settlement long gone, i.e. graveyard, an occasional abandoned old stone house, walls, and orchards. We will have our lunch next to the river and and a mountain hut and depending on the weather you'll have an excellent opportunity for a cold dip in Bijela. Here deep in the heart of the canyon we encounter rare species of pine and flowers. Be prepared for some bush walking, because you are in for a wild treat..... beautiful vertical rock faces towering 1,000 meters above us. Who knows we might even see wild goats and the occasional deer. This hike will take us about 6 hours, climbing not more than 300 meters. We return the same way we came slowly pulling ourselves out of this mystical canyon and towards a realization that Bosnia and Herzegovina's nature is just incredibly beautiful and unspoiled.

Eto, dijasporo, malo inspiracije kako pomoci domovini. Mozda se nas manje kritikovati... :D
