- rođen 9. oktobra 1940. u Liverpoolu;
- otac ga je napustio kad mu je bilo 5 godina, majka mu je poginula sa 17 (odgojila ga je tetka);
- u martu 1957., John osniva bend "The Quarrymen" u koji uskoro dolaze Paul McCartney i George Harrison;
- bend uskoro mijenja ime u "The Beatles" i pridružuje im se bubnjar Pete Best;
- sredinom 1962. menadžer benda postaje Brian Epstein, a bend odlazi na audiciju kod producenta George-a Martina;
- Ringo Starr (pravim imenom Richard Starkley) zamjenjuje Besta;
- 1963. Beatlesi izdaju prvi album "Please Please Me" koji je postao #1 i u Britaniji i u Americi.
- 4. aprila. 1964. Beatlesi drže prvih pet mjesta na Billboardovoj listi singlova i odmah postaju četvorica najpoznatijih ljudi na planeti;
- 4. marta 1966., John Lennon u jednom intervjuu izjavljuje da su "Beatlesi popularniji od Isusa Krista;"
- 1966. Izlazi njihov šesti album "Revolver", danas smatran najvećim albumom u istoriji moderne muzike;
- "Sgt. Pepper..." 1967. postaje prvi koncept album i vjerovatno najvažniji album u istoriji moderne muzike;
- 1970. godine McCartney objavljuje da Beatlesi više nisu zajedno, nakon 27 #1 singlova (što u Americi, što u Britaniji) i 12 #1 albuma s obje strane Atlantika (ironično jedini album koji nije stigao na #1 bio je većinom soundtrack za crtani film) sve to u 7 godina postojanja;
- Tokom solo karijere Lennon je izdao 9 albuma (i još dva posthumna), a najpoznatiji je bio "Imagine" 1971., sa istoimenim singlom, jednom od najslavnijih pjesama ikad;
- 8. decembra 1980. Lennon se sa suprugom vraćao sa snimanja albuma kada ga je pored njegove kuće u New Yorku upucao nenormalni obožavatelj Mark Chapman nanijevši mu smrtonosne povrede;
- 2000. godine, grupa slavnih muzičara među kojima je bio i McCartney proglašava Lennonovu pjesmu iz doba Beatlesa "In My Life" najboljom pjesmom svih vremena;
- 2002. godine, u anketi BBC-ja, Lennon je proglašen osmim najvećim britancem.
- Na listi "500 najvećih albuma svih vremena", poznatog američkog magazina "Rolling Stone", "Sgt. Pepper" završava kao prvi, a među prvih 5 našla su se još dva albuma Beatlesa (Revolver 3.; Rubber Soul 5.), a među prvih 10 imali su još i tzv. "The White Album;" Lennonov "Plastic Ono Band" zauzeo je 22. mjesto;
- Chapman služi doživotnu kaznu., a 2005. mu je odbijena četvrta molba za pomilovanje;
