Documentary profiling Johnny Cash, one of the giants of 20th century American music, who died in 2003 at the age of 71. In a musical career spanning five decades, Cash sang with Elvis Presley in the fifties, Bob Dylan in the sixties and Bono in the nineties. The son of a poor sharecropper, Cash signed to Sam Phillips' Sun Records in 1955. In the sixties, he created his 'Man in 'Black persona and his career took off with hits including Ring of Fire, and I Walk the Line. He married June Carter Cash, with whom he recorded many songs, and who helped him overcome his addiction to amphetamines. While his tours continued in the seventies and eighties, he fell out of favour and was dropped by his record label, Columbia. He re-ignited his career when he began recording with Def Jam's producer Rick Rubin and played at the Glastonbury Festival. Featuring contributions from Cash's daughter, Rosanne Cash, and son, John Carter Cash; longtime manager, Lou Robin; and fellow musicians, including Little Richard, Cowboy Jack Clement, Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard and Elvis Costello.
