dobih mailom...All,
I have just returned from the Kosevo hospital after visiting our newborn son. Although this was a very happy day for our little boy, I was also confronted with a horrible reality of living in the Balkans. While we were at the hospital, I overheard the father of the baby who shared a room in the intensive care unit with Thomas. He was making a very desperate plea to the person on the other end of the line to help him find blood for his son. It seems that the baby has AB+ blood, and a donor is not available, as less than 4% of people living in the Balkans have this blood type. Hoping that perhaps I could help, I told the Dr. that my blood is O-, and that I may be a suitable donor, but it turns out I am not. During the course of the conversation, the Dr told me that the baby will most likely not survive the weekend without a transfusion.
Normally I would let things such as this play out without interference, but this time the situation is quite different. It seems that the reason that the blood is not available for the transfusion is a lack of cooperation between the hospital in Mostar which houses the main blood bank for BiH, and the Kosevo hospital for obtaining the blood. Although I am not privy to the specifics of the situation, the Dr on call at the hospital seemed very upset that the blood could not be made available to help the baby.
I would ask anyone who has AB+ blood, or knows someone in Sarajevo who does, to contact me or Kosevo hospital directly in the neo-natal intensive care unit. You would be directly saving the life of a newborn child, and doing a good deed beyond what most people will ever receive a chance to do.
Regards,
ukratko, novorodjena beba na Kosevu najvjerovatnije nece prezivjeti ako ne dobije transfuziju AB+ krvi. Ako ima takvih forumasha, trkom na Kosevo na porodjajno...
