Forgive Zlatko Hukic, mastermind behind industrial hip-hop troupe Marz, for being conflicted. His very name is the result of two distinct Eastern hand-me-downs: Zlatko - a gift from his Croatian mother - and Hukic (pronounced Hook-itch) - from his Bosnian pop. "I'm somewhere in the middle," explains Hukic.
And so is his clashing sound - a skittery sonic deathmatch between hip-hop's oversexed swagger and industrial rock's mechanically propulsive squall. And why not? He did spend his formative years studying under Chicago's high priests of conflicted, churning industrial rock, Ministry. Since 1989, Hukic and engineer/programmer/producer Robert Hill have been perfecting a jagged hip-hop industrial concoction aggressive, lewd and unrelenting enough to send former industrialite b-boys like Consolidated or Disposable Heroes running for the hills, hands firmly placed over ears.
Now with fellow ex-Ministers Louis Svitek and Rey Washam, Hukic is traversing the country bringing a message of "self-empowerment" (albeit shrouded under good ol' fashioned aggression) and "sexuality" (albeit often confused for misogyny) on tour with the make-upped mooks in Insane Clown Posse.
But if industrial-rap doesn't catch on with the Juggalos this time around, Hukic will certainly be able to fall back on his many other talents as underground go-to-guy, whether it be helping produce five or six songs on the new Peter Gabriel record, convincing Al Jourgensen to lay a demi-rap for 1995's "Dead Guy," or just get serious amounts of sex.
What could you have possibly used to create some of the otherworldly noise on Lung Fu Mo She?
"Every possible thing you can imagine, literally. From [harmonizers like] H3000s to any kind of effects we could find. I actually have these guitar effects pedals that I bought in Nashville that this guy makes in his basement. So I don't even know what the hell they're called. They're not really called anything. He hand-paints them and puts them together and they just sound crazy. They have a very unique sound. Most of the distortion on the record is from those pedals. All those sounds, we created. All the noises blips and clicks - that's all guitars.
Have any industrial purists or hip hop purists expressed disdain for your combination?
No. At least not to my face. I'm sure there'll be people out there who only listen to hip hop and hate rock or hate heavy music. And people that only listen to heavy music and hate hip hop, but fuck 'em. It wasn't written for them.
Do you think your record is unfashionably violent, especially since records like this have come under heavy criticism?
I believe that our record is very positive. It's a record about unity, and it's a record about self-empowerment. I think it's aggressive but I don't think it's violent. There's certain things that I was kind of making fun of that's kind of being sarcastic, that I'm finding out people are taking seriously. You can never interpret how somebody's going to listen to your music.
What about the lyrics to "L'I'V'I'N" ["Look me in the fuckin' eye when you lie to me/Don't look away like a pussy-ass bitch/When you come up, I'll tell you straight up/You ain't shit, I ain't scared muthafucka"]? That's sarcasm?
To me, "L'I'V'I'N" is a self-empowerment song. Yeah, it's very aggressive, but "L'I'V'I'N" is the truth, and that's exactly who I am and how I feel. I'm not saying go out and beat the shit out of people. I'm not writing a song like "Oh, life is so hard, and I'm so broken, and it hurts so bad." I'm saying "fuck that, man." I glad to be alive. It's like life affirmation. Here's who I am and I'm fucking exited about it. There is shit that's funny in "L'I'V'I'N" It says, "What you got on my forty, boy?" That's a line out of "Friday!" I don't take too many things too seriously, but I'm realizing from the record that a lot of people do.
You say there's been a backlash from all the cursing on the record, what about the sexual stuff ["I need a bitch I can fuck in the mud/Swang that thang, girl, It's never enough"]?
That's really funny to me. I was born in Croatia and in Europe, they're a lot freer sexually. At noon, on a TV commercial, let's say for some kind of shower product, they'll show titties. They'll show an ass. They'll show a girl takin' a shower. So it's a lot looser over there. I've always been very sexual and I'm very open about it and all my relationships. And now people are freaking out.
We can fucking turn on TV any time of the day and watch violence, watch people getting murdered. But you can't talk about fuckin'. You can't talk about having sex with somebody, which, to me, is probably the most magical thing you can do in life. It's probably the single most important reason we're here.
So have you seen your share of tail on this tour?
Yeah, there's been some klix on this tour. [Laughs] I love women, man. I love 'em to death.
Here's a little weird thing my mom reminded me of: When we lived in Croatia, we lived in a little-ass house, bro, in the middle of nowhere. We lived up in the fuckin' mountains ... it's a village. There was this old man that lived across this river from us. He lost his leg in the war and he used to just hop around on these crutches. I used to go and hang out with him when I was like three or four. And he used to teach me all these dirty limericks. All these crazy-ass limericks about pussy and titties and shit. And I would come home and sing 'em to my mom. And she was like, "God, who the fuck is teaching you that?"
So when I was done with the record, I played her the songs and she's like, "Man, you're doing the same shit you were doing when you were three years old!"
The Insane Clown Posse kind of have a reputation for backstage antics, are you putting every other tour to shame?
I don't know, man. When we were touring with Ministry, we did some fucking crazy shit. We've all actually chilled out a lot and it's a lot more of a professional vibe than it was before. We got a lot more at stake right now.
So what were you doing with the Ministry boys on tour?
[Laughs] Um … Your typical backstage shit with the klix and the drugs. We got pretty wild, put it that way.

Uh … no. [Laughs] Not at this moment.
You use the word "gorilla" on the album numerous times, as a noun and as an adjective. What's the significance for you?
I always have these dreams that I'm a gorilla. I swear to God, I have dreams about being a gorilla all the time. It just means something powerful to me. Something powerful and natural.
Did you ever really fuck a bitch in the mud?
Hell, yeah! That's why I wrote that song. Everything that I say in that song, I've done. Every single thing I talk about in that song, I have done. There's nothing that's on that record that isn't from personal experience or from something that's directly happened. … Yeah, that shit is true.
I've always been a very sexual person since I was a little kid. And that just came very natural to me. And I've gotten to enjoy it.
