Hugo Chavez, elected president of Venezuela in 1998, is a colorful, unpredictable folk hero, beloved by his nation's working class and a tough-as-nails, quixotic opponent to the power structure that would see him deposed. Two independent filmmakers were inside the presidential palace on April 11, 2002, when he was forcibly removed from office. They were also present 48 hours later when, remarkably, he returned to power amid cheering aides. Their film records what was probably history's shortest-lived coup d'état.
It's a unique document about political muscle and an extraordinary portrait of the man The Wall Street Journal credits with making Venezuela "Washington?s biggest Latin American headache after the old standby, Cuba."
On April 11th, 2002, Irish documentarians Kim Bartley and Donnacha O'Briain were in Venezuela, with the intention of making a movie about the nation's democratically elected president, Hugo Chavez, whose support comes mostly from the country's impoverished, who make up 80% of the population. The film took a seriously unexpected turn when the filmmakers found themselves in the heart of a coup d'etat, trapped in the president's palace as Chavez's right-wing oligarchic opposition overthrew the leader. Chavez was able to return to power within 48 hours, buoyed by public support, but this film captures those frightening moments and days in which a nation's political future was fought over using both bullets and manipulation of the media. Venezuela's television networks, all owned by oil companies except for the state channel which the coup brought down, reported distorted interpretations of the coup, as proven by this movie's footage, which was then picked up by international news organizations like CNN. This movie also addresses what the White House thought about this coup in the world's fifth largest producer of oil (providing 14% of the United States' petroleum).

POWER OF NIGHTMARES

Image

In this BBC produced documentary, Adam Curtis, one of Britain's most distinguished documentary filmmakers, brings to life George Orwell's notions about the future of politics being one of controlling the masses for the benefit of the elite through subjecting them to fear of an omnipresent enemy. The documentary (which has been rebroadcast twice in Britain since its premier last fall) traces the evolution of power of both neo-conservative and political Islamist ideology as they relate to today’s political situation. The documentary doesn’t deny that there is a “terror threat,” but what it questions instead is the picture of Al-Qaeda as an organized terrorist network and whether the West might purposely be fighting a phantom enemy and why.

"Hello, I'm going to read a declaration of a state of war...within the next 14 days we will attack a symbol or institution of American injustice." ~ Bernardine Dohrn

Thirty years ago, with those words, a group of young American radicals announced their intention to overthrow the U.S. government. In THE WEATHER UNDERGROUND, former Underground members, including Bernardine Dohrn, Bill Ayers, Mark Rudd, David Gilbert and Brian Flanagan, speak publicly about the idealistic passion that drove them to "bring the war home" and the trajectory that placed them on the FBI's most wanted list.

Fueled by outrage over racism and the Vietnam War, the Weather Underground waged a low-level war against the U.S. government through much of the 1970s--bombing targets across the country that they considered emblematic of the real violence that the U.S. was wreaking throughout the world. Ultimately, the group's carefully organized clandestine network managed to successfully evade one of the largest manhunts in FBI history, yet the group's members would reemerge to life in a country that was dramatically different than the one they had hoped their efforts would inspire. Extensive archival material, including, photographs, film footage and FBI documents are interwoven with modern-day interviews to trace the group's path, from its pitched battles with police on Chicago's streets, to its bombing of the U.S. Capitol, to its successful endeavor breaking acid-guru Timothy Leary out of prison. The film explores the Weathermen in the context of other social movements of the time and features interviews with former members of the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and the Black Panthers. It also examines the U.S. government's suppression of dissent in the 1960s and 1970s.

Looking back at their years underground, the former members paint a compelling portrait of troubled times, revolutionary times, and the forces that drove their resistance.

oprostite što kasnim sa ovom najavom:

Film Society of Lincoln Center predstavlja The Troubles We’ve Seen: A History of Journalism in Wartime sutra (16. Augusta) u Walter Reade Theater u 2:00pm. Jedinstvena prilika za one koji žive u NYC da pogledaju dokumentarac slavnog francuskog redatelja Marcel Ophulsa po prvi put u USA.

Sadržaj:

The great Marcel Ophuls’s lacerating and often mordantly funny meditation on war and the reporting of war by Western media outlets —specifically the war in Bosnia — has never been commercially distributed in the United States, and we are proud to show it ten years later — Ophuls’s brilliant film is now more relevant than ever in light of the war in Iraq. Interviewees in Ophuls’s panoramic vision include Slobodan Milosevic (before he was tried for war crimes), CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, Walter Cronkite, John Burns, Martha Gellhorn (who told Ophuls: “Don't glamorise war correspondents. They can get out of war zones whenever they want. Soldiers and civilians can't.”), and swaggering French philosopher/superstar Bernard-Henri Lévy. “Like all of Marcel's films,” says Milestone’s Dennis Doros, “it's an investigation into human nature and a call for action toward a better understanding of ourselves and the feared ‘other.’ It took us fifteen years to acquire The Sorrow and the Pity and ten more years to acquire this one, but every minute has been worth it. I can't name a better documentarian or more important filmmaker living today.”
