The Balkan Voluntarism and Networking Summit
Contact making seminar in Bulgaria, 29-31 August 2005

The changing conditions in the South-East Europe countries, the war aftermath in the countries of former Yugoslavia and the negotiations of Bulgaria and Romania for joining the European Union create a diverse picture of needs and problems that the youth non-governmental organizations in the region have to face. In order to achieve their missions and empower the young people from the Balkans to deal with the problems in their communities, these organizations need to function in networks and work together on the international level.

The pilot project: “The Balkan Voluntarism and Networking Summit” would gather representatives from youth non-governmental organizations from the Balkan countries, which would like to develop networking projects for exchange of volunteers, and who work in the field of environment and intercultural learning. The contact-making seminar would be held in the village of Vlahi, Bulgaria, 29-31 August 2005. In the need for establishing a regional dialogue on the volunteering possibilities and the ways networks can function in spite of the borders, we invite you to take part in this event.
The organizers of the summit are the Bulgarian environmental non-governmental organization “Za Zemiata”(For the Earth) and the Jugend Umwelt Projektwerkstatt in Bad Oldesloe, Germany.

The program would include thematic workshops on anti-atom energy campaigns, projects about the implementation of renewable energy resources and anti-GMO projects. In the intercultural aspect, there would be a workshop for integration of minorities and promotion of intercultural understanding between the South-East European nations.

The other workshops would concentrate on the development of the collective voluntary service projects in South-East Europe: how to enable the people with less-opportunities to take part in such projects, how to make the information about international voluntarism free and accessible for all. What is it that the non-governmental youth organizations in South-East Europe miss: is it the lack of funding resources or the lack of support from the governmental institutions, is it the lack of interest from the young people. All those questions would find an answer in the forthcoming youth summit.

Former volunteers of the multilateral EVS network “The Baltic Youth Co-operation” (BYCo), would be there to tell about their experience in joint projects between organizations, which are exchanging volunteers. They would evaluate their voluntary service and offer useful tips for the development of similar future projects.

Using an open-space discussion, we would discuss the possibilities for realizing networking projects and supporting each other in different the campaigns we organize in connection with our projects. We would concentrate on the advantages that we would be able to benefit as organizations, working in networks, rather than concentrating on local projects without an overview about the situation in the neighbor South-East Europe countries. Environment and culture have no borders that is why our projects shouldn’t also have borders. What we are able to achieve alone, would be at least doubled, if we act together.

To state your participation, please fill in and send back the registration form till the 10th of July 2005.

ORIGINAL SENDER: Maria Popescu <[email protected]>

Dear Colleagues,

This is to inform you that the Luxembourg Institute for European and International Studies, in cooperation with the Black Sea
University Foundation and the European Cultural Centre in Bucharest will organize an international summer school on
the Evolution of mentalities in Eastern Europe and the future of the European project that will be held at
Vama Veche, a youth holiday village, between 3 - 9 September (leaflet with agenda and logistics attached).

As one of the main topics has to do with mentality and prejudice with special reference to the case of the Roma,
we would be glad to welcome a representative of your group to this seminar.

This year a number of scholarships will be provided by LIEIS for senior students and young researchers. The scholarships will
cover the participation fee, all meals, lodging in twin bed rooms at Vama Veche for 6 nights, as well as transportation expenses.

The organisers would like to finalise the application process by 29 July, so that the sooner they get scholarship requests, the better.
As the number of scholarships is restricted to 20 for all East European countries, a first come first served procedure will be used
(after having properly evaluated the scholarship requests of course).

Hoping you may be interested to take in the debates of this seminar, and that we may soon hear from you,

Sincerely,

Maria Popescu
Executive Director
European Cultural Centre, Bucharest.
