One final note about the election.
First of all, I am really scared. I am scared for the future of this country. Not because our next president might do (and it looks like he is going to do a lot of things that I don’t agree with), but more importantly, what are his supporters (the part that Hilary put into a basket of deplorables) will do, now when they think that their racism, bigotry and misogyny got a legitimate support from the president. That is scary as hell, and I say that as a white male.
Second, I am looking at all the analysis how this could happen. And I am sorry to say this, but I have a feeling that everyone is missing the point. These elections were not decided by white males, nor by influence of the third party candidates, nor by the people who didn’t vote, nor by the fascists who wanted their voices to be heard. These elections were decided by hard-working blue collar Americans (A shocking statistics says that 29% of Latinos voted for Trump). It is easy and understandable to share Hilary’s view about the world in general, especially if one lives in any of the big cities, surrounded by the people who are within the same income bracket and worry about things like global warming, human rights, international policies, etc etc. It is a bit harder to share that point of view if one lives in a small town in Pennsylvania, or Iowa, or Ohio, or Wisconsin, even Michigan. When you live your life, work hard (if you are lucky to have a job), and you still can’t afford payment on your house, or some nice vacation. Your parents could do that, but you can’t. There is something wrong with that picture.
Now, I do agree that everything Trump said is a pure BS, and he will probably make things much worse, but at the same time, he has succeeded to sell his BS to the people much better than Hilary, who probably has had much better plan. As a liberal who lives in a big city, for me it is much worse to hear a candidate talking about grabbing women for their pussy, but I also have to understand there is a majority of people who believe that Hilary’s speech to the banks, basically promising that she’ll let them regulate themselves was the worst thing they could hear, especially after 2007. Hilary was making one mistake after another, connecting herself to everything that people despise. I do believe that is a real irony that a guy who has never have done anything for the working class wins against any democrat, but that is the reality we need to live with.
There is a funny story, when different democrats were thinking about running for the president, the Wall Street sent a clear message that not a single democrat will get a penny if Elizabeth Warren runs even in the primaries. That is how we got Bernie. Oh Bernie, he never stood a chance, and as much as I was supporting him, I am glad that he didn’t run. He would be spent and the idea would die with him. The idea is more important than the person, which brings me to the silver lining.
If (and that is a big if) we survive the next four years, there will be time for the new elections. I want to believe that Democrats will learn their lesson and understand that the future is in the progressive movement, the same one who is talking to hard-working people and not to the big money, the movement that believes (but truly believes) in social justice. We need representatives who will really represent the will of the people, who will be working in everyone’s interest.
We need a first female president. Elizabeth Warren 2020!!!
