Treba editovati wiki.Modric in demand - PA Sport
It's not often that a player who started out in the Premier League of Bosnia and Herzegovina finds himself the subject of attentions from illustrious names in club football such as Real Madrid, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Inter Milan.
In fact, you would be hard pressed to name a single one. But Luka Modric could be about to put the relatively new league on the map.
England fans will remember the 22-year-old with less than fond memories after his performance at the heart of the Croatia team who knocked the Three Lions out of the qualifiers for Euro 2008 in November, but Arsenal supporters will be hoping the new year sees Modric reunited with old pal Eduardo da Silva in a dream team that could set the English Premier League alight.
The pair formed a blistering partnership at Dinamo Zagreb last season and Modric was Eduardo's main provider as the striker notched an incredible 34 goals in 32 games.
Their almost telepathic understanding has also seen Modric help Eduardo to 12 goals in 17 matches for Croatia, while the midfielder himself has shown he can put them away, having scored 20 goals in 69 appearances for Zagreb and three in 18 games for the national side.
Eduardo is loving life at Arsenal and the fact that he's also best friends with Modric could see the young star make the move to North London before the transfer window is out.
Zagreb did not stand in Eduardo's way when Arsenal came calling, but the signs are that they are set to put up more of a fight for Modric amid big interest from across Europe.
"Modric is definitely staying another year," said president Zdravko Mamic recently. "We rejected offers from some of the top clubs in England and Spain of up to 50million euros (GBP35million). We want him to stay to maintain our chances in Europe."
"I woke up on Friday morning and thanks to some kind of Godly vision I said to myself that it would be wonderful and honest that the club and the fans build a new vision of a European glory for Dinamo."
"Now, after the decision has been made, Modric is to stay, even if a 100million euros offer comes from Real Madrid, I will not accept it."
Modric is contracted to the Croatian giants until 2015 but, despite Mamic's protestations, it looks like their most prized asset will leave sooner rather than later.
The youngster was signed by Zagreb aged 16 but didn't play a game for them before being loaned out to Zrinjski Mostar in the Premier League of Bosnia and Herzegovina and there he quickly became the country's best player at the age of 17.
He was voted player of the year in 2003.
Modric has stated on numerous occasions that 'someone who can play in the Bosnian league can play anywhere', although it is likely he was referring to the physical nature rather than the skill of that league.
However, his all-round skills and ability to hold his own physically still bodes well for his future wherever he should decide to eventually move .
Modric only lasted a year in Bosnia before he was on his way back to Croatia to Inter Zapresic for a season and the fans of the small club remember him fondly after his performances, which earned him the Croatian player of the year award in 2004 and lifted the club to second in the league.
It was at Zapresic that he became a regular fixture in the Croatia Under-21 side and his stellar performances soon had him recalled to Zagreb in 2005.
The youngster won his first senior international cap in a 3-2 friendly win over Argentina on March 1 2006 and the Dinamo Zagreb wonderkid earned rave reviews for his superb display.
"Luka has risen all the way up through the under-17s, under-19s and under-21s, so he's well used to the national team and his talent has obviously not gone unnoticed," said coach Zlatko Kranjcar.
"As the minutes went by, he blended into the team perfectly and his understanding with Niko Kranjcar and Niko Kovac gave me cause for satisfaction. "
"What's more, knowing that we can count on him on the big occasions is clearly a plus point."
And count on him Croatia did, taking Modric to the World Cup that year, and the playmaker hasn't looked back since, becoming a mainstay in the national side.
Modric already has an impressive set of medals to his name, wining the league and Croatian Super Cup in 2006 before helping his side to the Croatian cup the following year, which also saw Zagreb retain their league title with four games to spare.
And no matter what Dinamo may say, with the big clubs circling it would take a brave man to bet against him lifting a trophy in one of the major European leagues before the season is out.
