In Europe, the case of the missing sparrows

It is almost as if they were tired of being taken for granted.
Common house sparrows, symbols of European city life, have almost disappeared from some of the Continent's capitals, and nobody has the slightest idea why.
In central London, where cheeky "cockney sparrows" once flocked to eat crumbs from peoples' hands, there is not a sparrow to be seen today.
In Amsterdam, the little gray and brown birds no longer cock their heads by the sides of the city's canals. The grimy north German port of Hamburg, the urban habitat par excellence for man's closest avian companion, is now a sparrow-free zone.
They have faded from the landscape without anybody paying attention.
"You don't notice common species because they are around you all the time, and then suddenly they aren't there any more," says bird expert Rosie Cleary. Dubbed Britain's "sparrow czar," she has just taken charge of a nationwide survey of the sparrow population for the British Trust for Ornithology.
Sparrows are seen fondly in European eyes. Cockney East Enders in London took the diminutive, resilient "sparrer" to their hearts, and the French singer Edith Piaf, who grew up in the streets of Paris, was nicknamed "Kid Sparrow."
The mystery of the sparrow's disappearance from so many European cities is all the more baffling because the bird is still found in normal numbers in other metropolitan areas, such as Berlin.
"The most fascinating thing about the situation is that it is by no means uniform across Europe," says Denis Summers-Smith, a British ornithologist who has been studying sparrows for half a century and who first raised the alarm.
That would seem to assuage the fears of those who have suggested that the sparrow could be the canary of modern urban life, warning us of hidden dangers. But it does not help explain the phenomenon.

Znam da su masovna uginuća vrabaca kao i svih ostalih životinja savršen znak da nešto ne valja u okolišu.
Za pčele se zna da pokraj ostalih faktora blago povišen nivo radijacije dovodi do masovnim uginuća te vrste.
Za vrapce - pa hajmo predpostaviti slijedeće što sam našao na više mjesta na internetu:

Disappearing FirefliesLike Fourth-of-July fireworks, cool swims on hot days, and lazy vacations, fireflies are a sign of summer. Many of us have cherished memories of spotting and catching them during warm summer evenings and running through fields that sparkled as if strewn with stars. But there are signs our kids may not grow up with the same firefly memories we had. That’s because fireflies are disappearing from marshes, fields and forests all over the country—and all over the world. And if it continues, fireflies may fade forever, leaving our summer nights a little darker and less magical.
Why Are Fireflies Disappearing?
Nobody knows for sure. But most researchers blame two main factors: development and light pollution.
Most species of fireflies thrive as larvae in rotting wood and forest litter at the margins of ponds and streams. And as they grow, they more or less stay where they were born. Some species are more aquatic than others, and a few are found in more arid areas—but most are found in fields, forests and marshes. Their environment of choice is warm, humid and near standing water of some kind—ponds, streams and rivers, or even shallow depressions that retain water longer than the surrounding ground.
The problem is that in America and throughout the world, our open fields and forests are being paved over, and our waterways are seeing more development and noisy boat traffic. As their habitat disappears under housing and commercial developments, firefly numbers dwindle. Logging, pollution and increased use of pesticides may also contribute to destroying firefly habitat and natural prey.
Human traffic is believed to disrupt firefly habitat as well. While scientific studies have only been done for the past few years, there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence in areas that were once full of fireflies—and much of it goes back generations. Some areas once had so many fireflies that they profited from running firefly tours in marshes and forests—but since human traffic has increased, firefly populations have gone down.
Too Much Light At Night
Scientists don’t know enough about fireflies to tell for sure. But the signs are indicating light pollution as a major factor in the disappearance of fireflies all over the world.
Both male and female fireflies use their flashing lights to communicate. Some species synchronize their flashes, sometimes across large groups of thousands of insects. All species speak a language of light—scientists believe they use it to attract mates, defend their territory, and warn off predators.
Human light pollution is believed to interrupt firefly flash patterns. Scientists have observed that synchronous fireflies get out of synch for a few minutes after a car’s headlights pass. Light from homes, cars, stores, and streetlights may all make it difficult for fireflies to signal each other during mating—meaning fewer firefly larvae are born next season.
Where fireflies once had uninterrupted forests and fields to live and mate, homes with landscaped lawns and lots of exterior lights are taking over. The reduction of habitat and the increase in lighting at night may all be contributing to make fireflies more rare.
Fireflies are fascinating creatures that light up our nights and bring a sense of magic and mystery to our environment. If they disappear, it will be a great loss to habitats and generations of people all over the world.

Ima svitaca. Po povratku sa Skakavca prije otprilike mjesec dana vidio sam ih na desetine u Nahorevu.

Zivim u centru grada i imam malo dvoriste, 2-3 drveta, nesto cvijeca i garaze. I tu je oduvijek bilo milion
vrabaca i golubova. Zato jer citav komsiluk baca stari hljeb na graze. Sve do prije 2-3 godine, kad se broj drasticno smanjio. I vrabaca i golubova, ali vise vrabaca. Prvo sam mislila da je to zbog vrana i svraka (jedna par napravio gnijezdo na drvetu), ali vrane su otisle, a vrapci se ne vracaju. Prije nekoliko mjeseci sam dozivjela sok kad sam sjela u auto (bio ispod drveta parkiran par sati) kad je poletjelo perje na sve strane, i krvava fleka na sajbi. I mrtav vrabac pored tocka. Tad sam mislila da su se potukla 2 jata vrabaca (a to je bilo klasika, jedno jato na jednom drvetu, drugo na drugom, pa svako malo se nesto kao potuku, a u stvari cijucu, djivdjaju, ukratko galame kao krdo slonova, ali bez prave tuce, samo se nesto ganjaju) ili da ga je vrana ubila. Sad kad citam ovo, svasta mi pada na pamet.

upravo sam u holandskim novinama procitao da postoji bolest od koje je ove godine dosta vrabaca uginulo.bolest se zove trichomonas gallinae.

Ovo postaje zabrinjavajuće. NEMA VRABACA U PEJTONU! Barem ih nema oko moje zgrade.
Pejton, poznat kao ''džungla'', puno drveća i zelenila zasadjenog sedamdesetih godina koje je sačuvano tokom rata, a nema vrabaca. Postavio sam im hranilicu, specijalnu, samo za male ptice i,...Nema vrabaca.
Posmatrajte, pa izvjestite iz vašeg naselja, grada, sela,...

Prošlog ljeta ni sjajguze (Svice, fireflay-e) nisam vidio da predveče lete,...

e fakat to za svice. prosle godine sam bila u BiH tokom ljeta prvi put nakon par godina i - zalila sam se sto ih nema. doduse bio je septembar i mozda je to kasno, ali svejedno su mi falili.
BTW, pogledah wikipediju i tamo pise da svijetle samo zenke i da one ne lete. ali ja se sjecam ganjanja "letecih" svitaca. jesam li ja to nesto romantizirala u glavi ili wiki nije tacna?

) otesu, i citavo proljece su me budili cvrkutanjem, da bi pocetkom-do sredine ljeta to (srecom) prestalo. gdje su otisli ne znam, ali znam da mi je punk

Ipak ih ima. Bio sam u garaži i vidio nekoliko vrabaca kako kljucaju kišom namočeni hljeb.
Ali ih ima znatno, znatno manje nego, recimo, prije nekoliko godina. Hranilica na prozoru, a oni ne dolaze.

Nisi sanjala, svici (svjetlaci) lete,....Sad ne znam koji su što svijetle, muzjaci ili ženke,...I ja sam ih ganjao kao dijete, pa na svom čelu pravio rasvjetu. Kasnije sam prestao da ih tako mučim.
U avgustu im je vrijeme da svijetle i lete predveče. Zar u Japanu nema svitaca?
@Neelix, komšija iz Otesa,...Hehehe! Kaže se U OTESU, samo ako je nešto na vodi ili na brdu, planini, onda prijedlog NA. Na Ilidži, Ilidža=Banja=Spa=Sumporna voda.

. znaci da onda wiki nije tacna.
u japanu jos nisam vidjela svice. ali imaju mnogo vrabaca

Ma ni golubova vise nema ni izbliza kao prije, a kamoli vrabaca...ove svrake i vrane nas okupirale nemilice...
Doduse, i mi sami smo, bar u Sarajevu, tome itekako doprinijeli jos u ratu. Pojeli smo skoro sve golubove u gradu, a vrane i svrake nismo dirali, tako da je nakon rat tih pticurina bilo puno vise nego golubova. A kako su ovo jace i otpornije ptice, koje takodjer napadaju i golubove i vrapce, jasno je zasto danas imamo deficit u vrapcima i golubovima...
