Izložba pod nazivom "Prijedor: Lives from the Bosnian Genocide“ predstavlja pakleni put nekadašnjih logoraša.

Izložba pod nazivom "Prijedor: Lives from the Bosnian Genocide“ predstavlja pakleni put nekadašnjih logoraša.

LITTLE BOSNIA, inspired by interviews with Bosnian refugees and their families overseas, is an original piece commissioned by Avalon about the St. Louis Bosnian community. LITTLE BOSNIA features original music by Dan Rubright and a blended cast of St. Louis theatre professionals and artists from the St. Louis Bosnian and Former-Yugoslavian communities. Faris is about to graduate from college in St. Louis and begin his American dream when he learns that he must return to Bosnia to reclaim his family's apartment. It is not until he sees Bosnia as an adult, after the war - and until he returns to the United States - that he discovers exactly who he is and who he wants to be.

Producing new plays always is risky. Commissioning them, and putting them on a stage is riskier still – and perhaps a moment of triumph, as achieved by the Avalon Theatre Company over the weekend with the premiere of "Little Bosnia", by Christina Pippa, to run through April 20 at the Union United Methodist Church.
The play, a warm look at the local Bosnian community, with some Bosnian actors, has its ups and downs, but some absolutely terrific performances and a warm interpretation of the group's manners and attitudes – sometimes too warm – makes the evening a success, especially to those of Eastern European heritage, where a parent's need to keep a child fed and warm is an over-riding feeling.
Pippa's story deals with Faris, a Bosnian who has become Americanized to the point of seeing a hedge-fund financier as his ultimate ambition, and the grandmother who has reared him. Her last request is for him to visit Sarajevo and after she dies, he makes the journey, meeting her twin sister, Azra. Susie Wall is klix in both roles, warm and funny and with total possession of the character. Kudos also to Larry Mabrey, who directed and designed the set, to Dan Rubright's music; and to the performances of Saso Cemerski, Jason Contini, Mirza Halilovic, Theresa Herman, Anela Islamovic and Elma Mujanovic.
Hear new and different voices in "Little Bosnia," a learning experience that is fun by the Avalon Theatre Company through April 20.
