Jacques Loussier Trio - The Bach Book:40th Anniversary Album (1999)
Jacques Loussier was born in Angers, in northwestern France, October 26, 1934. He started playing piano at the age of ten and quickly demonstrated tremendous ability. When Loussier was just sixteen, he entered the Conservatoire National de Musique in Paris where he studied for some years with Professor Yves Nat whose youthful compositions were praised by Faure and Saint-Saлns and whose prodigious gifts as a pianist were encouraged by Debussy. Continuing this distinguished lineage, Loussier was to become one of Nat’s most accomplished pupils, heading the conservatory’s piano class of over five hundred students before leaving to commence a freelance career that included travels to South America and the Middle East as well as work as accompanist for Catherine Sauvage and Charles Aznavour.

In 1959, Loussier hit upon the idea that was to make his international reputation, by combining his interest in jazz with his love of J.S. Bach. Only a pianist with such an exceptional classical technique and deft improvisatory skill could have nurtured such a vision. He founded the Play Bach Trio, which used Bach’s compositions as the basis for jazz improvisation. The trio immediately caught the public imagination. In their live appearances, tours and concerts, plus a succession of recordings built on the cornerstone of four albums made for Decca between 1960 and 1963, Loussier’s group achieved the breakthrough to popular commercial success enjoyed by only a select few jazz musicians. In fifteen years, the trio sold over six million albums.

During its heyday, the trio broadened the range of its experiments with Loussier double tracking some pieces on organ and piano and, later, recording some of his arrangements of Bach’s concerti with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. However, after years on the road, like many popular commercial groups, the original trio reached the end of its natural life in 1978. In 1980, Loussier retired to his home in Provence to compose, research and record. He had already dabbled in film and ballet composition and had established his own recording studio at Miraval, not far from Nice, where in addition to composing his own pieces for acoustic and electronic instruments, he played host to many recording stars of the rock world including Pink Floyd, Elton, John, Sting and Yes. In fact, segments of Pink Floyd’s The Wall were recorded at Loussier’s studio.

Loussier’s own music of the 1980s explored the integration of new technology with conventional instruments, just as his 1950s experiments explored the ground between jazz and classics. He produced suites for piano, synthesizers, percussion and bass, and some rock-jazz-classical fusion works including Pulsions, Pagan Moon and Fusions Sous La Mer.

The tercentenary of Bach’s birth in 1985 coaxed Loussier back to the trio format and he re-formed the Play Bach Trio with two new partners. He feels his new trio has far more stylistic range than its predecessor, and whereas that was a pioneer group, the latterday trio combines jazz, rock and contemporary classical ideas with the mix of jazz and Bach. The trio keeps up a busy touring schedule, traveling annually in Japan and the U.K. as well as in Loussier’s native France. It also appears regularly in Germany, Spain and Italy. Loussier leaves plenty of room in his schedule to write his own compositions. In 1986, he produced a mass entitled Lumieres, his first full-scale work for symphony orchestra, which continues his exploration of the synthesis of musical genres. In its Paris premiere, classical countertenor James Bowman and soprano Deborah Rees found themselves singing alongside a rock drummer. Loussier has subsequently written a trumpet and violin concerto (both in 1988), a suite for string, Tableaux Venetiens, and a ballet, Trois Couleurs (1989), to celebrate the bicentenary of the French Revolution.

His first Telarc release, Jacques Loussier Plays Bach, debuted in 1996. His next recording, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, unlocked a new vein of creativity and self-discovery, in which Loussier searched for a deeper level of exploration altogether. He followed up this excursion into the Italian baroque with Jacques Loussier Plays Satie, a look at the founding father of French minimalism. His exceptional 1999 release, Ravel’s Bolero, explored Loussier’s very personal connection to the work of the French impressionists. The Bach Book: 40th Anniversary Album, a new recording of Loussier’s best-selling works from the ‘60s was also released in 1999. In 2000, for the first time ever, Loussier tackled the monumental Goldberg Variations, in honor of the 250th anniversary of the death of J.S. Bach.

In 2001, Loussier released Baroque Favorites, an innovative jazz-trio perspective on the works of Handel, Scarlatti, Pachelbel and other artists of the baroque period. A year later, he recorded Handel: Water Music & Fireworks. Loussier’s most recent effort is Beethoven: Symphony No. 7, released in October 2003.
Jacques Loussier is the man who has brought Bach and jazz together more successfully than anyone in history. Long recognized in Europe for his adventurous excursions through classical landmarks, when Loussier performs the compositions of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 – 1750) the music develops a lyrical and swinging jazz sensibility. He is joined on this breakthrough recording by bassist Vincent Charbonnier and drummer Andrй Arpino.

Playing Bach’s work has become almost second nature to Loussier. Track one, “Prelude No. 1 in C major from The Well-Tempered Clavier,” was the first work of Bach’s ever arranged by Loussier and was considered a bombshell when it was originally released forty years ago. Also featured is a rhapsodic, yet spare version of the perennial Bach favorite "Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring.” The album closes with the dazzling “Concerto in D Major,” one of the works with which Loussier habitually closes his concerts. Like each piece in The Bach Book, it hinges on Loussier’s precise piano playing and assumes a distinct character by virtue of his unique arrangements.

The Bach Book is the second of two Loussier releases during this 40th anniversary year of his first Play Bach album. The first, Ravel’s Bolйro (CD-83466), was released to klix critical acclaim. Impressed by Loussier’s compelling rendering of Ravel’s hypnotic work, Los Angeles Times critic Don Heckman hailed the recording as “a musical mix invigorated by the many harmonic associations between jazz and French Impressionism.”

Loussier’s original Play Bach Trio, which was the first to use Bach’s compositions as the basis for jazz improvisation, was founded in 1959 and went on to sell over six million albums. A major pioneer, Loussier has since established himself as one of France’s leading pianist/composers, and he continues to pack the world’s concert halls with his unique interpretations of Bach and other composers. He also owns and operates Miraval, a popular studio in rural France where this recording was made.

To mark the 250th anniversary of J.S. Bach’s death, Telarc will release Jacques Loussier’s recording of the Bach Goldberg Variations early next year.

Stars - Heart (2003)
Heart is the stunning sophomore album from Montreal quartet, Stars. The follow-up to the bands critically acclaimed Nightsongs (Top 10 Albums of 2001 - Village Voice).
-----------
....Now, this isn't the type of album you just up and buy on a whim. You'd have to have either heard of this group or been reccomended this album from another vague source who has told you simply to "check it out" because "it's good." If you're already a fan, what are you waiting for -- add this sucker to your cart! However, if you've never heard of this group before and would like to know what you're getting yourself into, never fear -- this is the review for you.

Stars are an indie rock group, quite similar to Belle & Sebastian. Breezy male & female vocals accompany soft, light melodies set to a consistently slow tempo. The tunes themselves are catchy, with heavy pop influences. I'm not too sure where the "electronic" references surfaced. Sure, "Death To Death" may be synthesized, but most of the songs on this album feature acoustic guitars, strings & woodwinds. The first 30 seconds of the album consist of introductions from each band member, followed by the line "this is my heart." Surprisingly, all the gooey, sentimental goodness doesn't get stale after the novelty wears off. Each track is perfectly suited to the album's title, with love as a recurring theme. My favorites include "What The Snowman Learned About Love," "Elevator Love Letter" & "Heart."

All in all, a great, lovey-dovey album. "Heart" is like a warm cup of milk on a cold winter day. You may not be in the mood for warm milk once summer hits, but rest assured you'll be yearning for a mugful in a few short months. This one's a keeper. You may also want to check out "Apartment Life" by Ivy for some similar (but a bit more poppy) tunes.
1. What The Snowman Learned About Love
2. Elevator Love Letter
3. Heart
4. The Woods
5. Death To Death
6. The Vanishing
7. Romantic Comedy
8. Time Can Never Kill The True Heart
9. Look Up
10. Life Effect
11. Dont Be Afraid To Sing

The first Primus album to achieve much widespread airplay (thanks to its release on a major), and the one that broke them on MTV, Sailing the Seas of Cheese completely redefined the possibilities of the electric bass in rock music for those who'd never heard the group before. Slapping like a funk player, but strumming power chords and finger-tapping like a metal guitar hero, Les Claypool coaxed sounds from his instrument that had rarely if ever been made the focus of a rock band. Claypool's riffs were so full and dominant that they hardly needed to be doubled by guitarist Larry LaLonde (and wouldn't have had the same effect anyway), which freed him up on most songs to launch into dissonant, atonal solos that essentially functioned as texture, complementing Claypool's oddly whimsical sense of melody. The combination results in a weird atmosphere that could be transformed into something dark or eerie, but Claypool's thin, nasal voice and demented blue-collar persona place the record firmly in the realm of the cheerfully bizarre. The compositions are mostly riff-driven, fleshing out their heavy metal roots with prog rock tricks from Rush and Frank Zappa, as well as the novelty side of Zappa's sense of humor. The willful goofiness may alienate some listeners, but it can also obscure some genuinely dark humor, and it never detracts from the band's frequently stunning musicianship. Somewhat analogous to jazz trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, Claypool hasn't inspired many direct imitators because of his tremendous feats of dexterity. But his stature as a virtuoso able to take his instrument into previously undreamed-of realms is without question. Though Sailing the Seas of Cheese tones down Primus' penchant for jamming, it's the tightest, most song-oriented representation of their jaw-dropping, one-of-a-kind style.

Klaus Schulze - Body Love (1977) zip, 74 MB

Originally released in 1977, Body Love is Schulze´s first soundtrack. The famous pornography director, Lasse Braun, asked him to compose an original soundtrack to his movie by the same name. Schulze had great success overseas, and in 1977 the album became # 2 in the USA Billboard import charts.

Klaus Schulze first attracted attention as a member of the German progressive rock band, Tangerine Dream. Following the release of their debut LP, Electronic Meditation, he departed for a solo career. Klaus' recorded work typically features extended pieces sometimes filling an entire album built around computer-generated synthesizers and other specially programmed electronic effects. Klaus Schulze remains a cult figure in the United States, where the bulk of his prolific output has until now been available only through the import bins. He is widely considered an avant-garde mainstay as well as a founding father of both the new-age space music and electronica genres.
--------
This soundtrack from one of Lasse Braun's porn movies(!!) was surprisingly enough the album where Schulze finally found his best and most distinctive sound and style. The addition of the mellotron gave the music a symphonic and majestic lift that not was heard on any of his previous records. Schulze favoured the choir-sound instead of the more commonly used string-sound of the mellotron, and this could be heard right away on the opener "Stardancer". The track featured energetic rhythms by Schulze's synths and Harald Grosskop's drumming, surrounded by improvisations with meaty and powerful synth-sounds upon a carpet of mellotron. "Blanche" is easily one of the most beautiful moments in Schulze's catalogue. It opens with a very quiet and atmospheric piano that leads into a soft and slow electronic rhythm with some touchingly beautiful synth-solos on top. For the first time since "Black Dance" this was an album that featured as much as three tracks, and the second side was taken up by "P.T.O.". This track was Schulze at his best and most typical, with lots of hypnotic electronic rhythms that seemed to go on forever, and the mellotron was again adding a new dimension to Schulze's music that completed his classic sound. I'll recommend "Body Love" as the very best place to start if you're not familiar with Schulze yet.

2. Blanche 11:44
3. P.T.O. 27:12

Jamaica has been called the loudest island in the world, and given its size (some 4,000 square miles), it undoubtedly releases more records per square foot than any other place on the planet, and with the possible exception of Trinidad, no country has a more political pop music. While railing against Babylon remains a continued concern, Jamaican musicians have also turned their dizzying array of styles, versions, toasts, and dubs to more secular subjects, including hundreds of paeans to ganja. British label Trojan Records licensed Jamaican records for distribution during the 1970s and 1980s, and has raided the vaults for numerous reissues over the years, leading to this three-disc box set of hymns to herbal conditioning. Spanning late ska, classic roots reggae, DJ toasts, and early dancehall, Ganja Reggae boasts 50 tracks of smokin' classics. Included are Glen Browne's recipe for disaster "Collie and Wine," Clancy Eccles' hopeful "Ganja Free," and Neville Brown's defiant "Babylon Don't Touch My Sensi." Lee "Scratch" Perry's production of "Kaya" by Bob Marley & the Wailers is here, along with the dub version, and a credible cover of the song by Ronnie Davis. Another Perry production, Bunny and Ricky's spooky "Bush Weed Corntrash," is an obvious highlight. The various Trojan box sets always yield treasures, and this one is no exception. Pound for pound, it is the best ganja set out there. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
