Martin Broughton was said to be in attendance at Anfield today. He was spearheading a consortium to buy Chelsea. It remains to be seen if he would be spearheading any for LFC (he was previously LFC chairman for a short period before FSG’s Tom Werner took over).

The recent changes in ownership in English football, primarily at Chelsea, have prompted FSG to consider Liverpool’s own valuation and has resulted in a sales document being put together for potential interested parties.

Liverpool were valued at £3.89 billion by Forbes in May before Roman Abramovich sold Chelsea to a consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital for £2.5 billion, with a guarantee of a further £1.75 billion investment in the club. The Merseyside club, who were bought by FSG for £300 million in October 2010, could expect to top that figure, especially if an auction develops.

By establishing what someone would be prepared to pay to buy Liverpool, FSG could then determine what a minority stake would be worth should it decide to sell a percentage of the club. There is the option of selling if an offer is tempting, though they also have a plan if they were to continue as owners.

The four shortlisted bidders for Chelsea all had strong US links and sources close to that sale anticipate a strong American interest in Liverpool.

The group that was led by the former British Airways chairman Sir Martin Broughton, and had significant support from Michael Klein, an investment banker, already has strong links with Liverpool.

In 2010 Broughton was brought in as chairman of the club and, with Klein’s assistance, secured the sale to FSG. Also backing Broughton’s Chelsea consortium were Creative Artists Agency, the global talent management agency, and Evolution Media Capital, a sports advisory and financing partnership.

While the Liverpool Supporters Board does not have the power of veto over the sale of the club, Broughton’s previous involvement would likely make him a popular figure. Additionally, Klein advised Gordon Brown, the prime minister at the time, on the banking crisis of 2008.

Insiders also believe that there could be interest from the Ricketts family, who own the Chicago Cubs baseball team and looked at Tottenham Hotspur before bidding for Chelsea.
