Like A Rolling Stone - B.B.King and Jimi Hendrix

How would two virtuouso guitarists interpret a brilliant song, some say the greatest of all time, a melody so full of character? This is one of those songs where Dylan gives full voice to his singing, something that often took a backseat to the story-telling aspect of his music. B.B.King and Jimi Hendrix give us their version of Like A Rolling Stone at a concert where they ask the venerable Paul Butterfield Blues Band to back them (2). Hendrix, known for playing Dylan at concerts, takes on vocalist duties over a solid rhythm section with surging bass guitar runs that complement either lead wonderfully. B.B.King, as always, stands out with his bending blues-style licks and as always, has an uncanny knack of playing them at exactly the right moments.

Although both Hendrix and King play their parts adequately, there are no extended solos or duets. It would have been interesting to see how a guitar duel would have fit in the context of the song, if only to satisfy that greed to want to hear these two masters improvise within the space that a third gave them. Hendrix's vocals lack the kind of colour that Dylan gave the song and got us used to. In spite of this, this performance stands up well enough for itself independently, and really, Jimi Hendrix and B.B. King playing anything together is well worth a listen to. Seemingly torn between wanting to do justice to a great song and wanting to do justice to their mighty talents, they come up just a little short on both counts.

B.B. King and Jimi Hendrix. Can you imagine two greater guitarists playing together? I know I sure can't. Unfortunately they do not play together for this entire CD, just the last 3 tracks.And Jimi only appears on 4 in total.
A very bluesy CD, as if it would be anything else considering who plays on it, and they are backed up by the Paul Butterfield Blues band. Apparently the entire jam session is not presented here on this single CD, as it was over 90 minutes in length. But
what is here is pretty good stuff. An okay Like A Rolling Stone (I personally haven't heard a better version than the Monterey one). Then what follows is some blues jamming, which does not include participation by Jimi. But it's good music none the less. Jimi comes back in on track 6 until the end. If you are a fan of the blues(and if you like Jimi you must be!), you'll like this CD.
Quality is quite good considering it was recorded in a club without the proper equipment. A decent CD, my only problem with it is there's not enough B.B. & Jimi playing together. But defintely worth picking up and adding to your collection.
Note : Jimi only appears on tracks 1, 6, 7, & 8

artists (Laura Nyro, Joni, Rickie Lee) are always getting the short end of the
stick. When this album was released it was generally deemed a failure and it got no
airplay and fell off the charts. Listening to it 22 years later I can't believe
how underrated it has become. If you thought Joni was just a flower-powered folk singer
then you were wrong. This is some of the most spacey, haunting, and eccentric music
out there. Oh, the instruments may seem familiar but the way they are used is just
plain out there. Jaco Pastorius can make his bass sound like a trumpet, sax, piano,
Fender Rhodes, synth and more. Joni's guitar playing had never been or never was again
this powerful or primal. Highlights: everything. God Must Be a Boogie Man a duet
between Joni's guitar and Jaco's bass combines her haunting vocals backed by a chorus
of what sounds like escapees from a mental institution. The Wolf That Lives In Lindsey:
with Joni's near perfect phrasing and a devil-may-care guitar strum. The Dry Cleaner
from Des Moines: an uptempo jazz-tune which, in a just world, would have been a great
single. Oh and one more thing, Joni's voice would never again be this perfect. She had
trained her voice and it has never sounded better. It didn't have that high screechy,
nails-on-the-chalkboard sound of her early days, nor the Tom Waits-gravel quality it has
today. This is an essential part of Joni's oeuvre. Get it now
