Jorge Valdano: Liverpool's Xabi Alonso Could Yet Join Price-Conscious Real Madrid
Real Madrid's transfer targets have changed as they have, somewhat surprisingly, been priced out of the running for Franck Ribery, Cesc Fabregas and Maicon...
Jorge Valdano has revealed that Real Madrid are quietly confident of doing a deal for Xabi Alonso, but cannot see Franck Ribery, Cesc Fabregas or Maicon joining the club.
Los Merengues' director general added to his earlier statement that Liverpool's price for their midfielder was too high for Real, but explained that the move could still happen.
Madrid have already signed four big-name players, and are still in the market for more - although at more modest prices than they paid for Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka.
"Everyone knows that [Alonso] is a player that we have always been interested in," Valdano told Radio Marca.
"He is someone that can organise and is in a phase of his career where he has matured.
"There was a rough figure put forward, but in recent days that has gone up and the price is now too high for our tastes and, therefore, we see the player further away now.
"But everything can be turned back around."
Bayern Munich have made it clear that they do not want Franck Ribery to leave and Valdano has received the message and does not think a transfer will happen.
"Ribery gives the feeling that he is not going to leave Bayern Munich this season as they have found many ways of saying no," he continued.
"At times they have said no specifically and at other times they have talked about €80 million, which is another way of saying no.
"Therefore, we have to accept that and wait for another chance to arrive. The player has two years left on his contract and, well, life is long."
Madrid have been linked with Arsenal playmaker Fabregas, but Valdano thinks that the arrival of Kaka means that the squad now need a different type of midfielder.
"Cesc has some things in common with Kaka. We are looking at the team and believe we need someone further back, someone to play alongside Lassana Diarra," he explained.
Lastly, Maicon was said to be on Los Merengues' agenda, but the price that Inter have proposed means that any plans to make an approach have been shelved.
"He is a player that they have asked €40 million for. We will not pay that because we have Sergio Ramos in that position and he is nothing to worry about," Valdano added.
