sto prije to bolje.............ako budemo cekali nam "drzava" rjesava socijalne probleme...... onda ce nas sve pokositi infarkti il' djedove stracare.......
Tamo ce ih Rifet fino moci posjecivati, a djeca ce imati krov nad glavom, odjecu, obucu, redovnu ishranu i mogucnost skolovanja i sto je najbitnije ... nekoga ko ce brinuti o njima.
Jer bez nje mozete prouzrokovati vise stete nego korisit. A, kako to? Jednostavno.

The concept
In view of the misery of countless war orphans and homeless children after the Second World War, the Austrian Hermann Gmeiner initiated the construction of the world's first SOS Children's Village in the small Tyrolean town of Imst in 1949.

SOS Children's Villages revolve around the effort to give children who have lost their parents or who are no longer able to live with them a permanent home and a stable environment. The SOS Children's Village family-like structure is formed by four basic principles: mother, brothers and sisters, house and village.
Each child is given a so-called SOS mother. She is the main person who cares for this child and is a substitute for the child's natural parents. She lives in a house together with the children that she is looking after. Together with them she organises the family's daily life. She creates strong and dependable relationships and gives the children a safe and loving home. The job of an SOS Children's Village Mother is usually carried out by single women who have to complete an extensive training programme. They are supported in their highly responsible task by educational co-workers as well as by women who are still training to be SOS Children's Village mothers.
klix and boys of differing ages grow up together in an SOS Children's Village family like brothers and sisters. Natural brothers and sisters are not separated. Children are accepted from small babies until the age of ten unless there are brothers and sisters involved, in which case the children could be older.
Every family has a house of its own. Each house has a combined living/dining room as the centre of social life. The familiar atmosphere of a home of their own encourages bonding within the families and is another important piece in the "mosaic" SOS Children's Village to give the children a feeling of belonging and shelter.
...but the concept behind it is the same: Mussoorie in India - Photo: H. Soegaard
On average an SOS Children's Village has between ten and fifteen family houses. The village provides the background for an extended family community. This supplies the children with cultural roots and gives them a feeling of belonging. At the same time, village life is an important bridge to the local community. The SOS Children's Village should be an open place which not only promotes the integration of the SOS Children's Village children into the local district but also supports interaction and encounters with neighbouring communities.
Special emphasis is placed on giving the children a thorough preparation for life on their own afterwards. This is in order that the children can be integrated into their local community and opens job opportunities for them. Those facilities which follow the SOS Children's Village in the chain of care and support are therefore of utmost importance. Youth facilities, vocational training centres and schools belong to this group of secondary facilities.
Beyond that there are also other types of facilities and aid programmes whose main intention it is to improve living conditions for families in the neighbourhood on a long-term basis. The social centres, kindergartens, medical centres, training centres and schools are not only used by children and youths from the SOS Children's Village but are also there for the general public. The emphasis lies in providing further education, a basic medical service and in improving the social conditions in the long-term. SOS Children's Villages tries to help during acute times of need, such as natural disasters or conflicts, by putting rapid and unbureaucratic emergency relief programmes into action. These are especially aimed at providing children, women and families with urgently needed support.
SOS Children's Villages' activities in the country
Many children lost their parents during the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina between 1991 and 1995. The war was still in progress when SOS-Kinderdorf International made contact with the authorities at the beginning of 1994. Together they worked out the following plan of action: as a first measure of aid over 200 Bosnian foster families, who had agreed to take in more than 270 orphans, were to receive financial support. A counselling centre for families and a club were set up in Sarajevo. The aim of the club was to help children and youths overcome the traumas they had experienced in the war by putting on plays, playing music, painting, playing games and learning foreign languages. Unfortunately, the turmoil of the war meant that both these facilities had to be closed in 1995.
After the war, SOS Children's Villages decided to help the people by setting up permanent facilities. The cornerstone was laid for an SOS Children's Village in the capital, Sarajevo, in September 1996. The same was done for the second Bosnian SOS Children's Village in Gracanica, near Tusla one month later. Both SOS Children's Villages were completed by the end of February 1998 and the first children were shortly able to move into their new homes. The city of Mostar had been particularly heavily bombed and so SOS-Kinderdorf International decided to renovate two kindergartens that had been hit. One of them was in the Bosnian and the other in the Croatian part of the city. Shortly after, it was possible to hand the Croatian kindergarten over to the authorities.
A new SOS Social Centre was opened in Sarajevo in December 1999. Amongst other things it houses a kindergarten and a youth centre, which is in part, a continuation of the club that was set up during the war. A pedagogical excellent project is the SOS Kindergarten in Gorazde, which was built in 2001. In 2002 Youth Facilities were established in Tusla and Sarajevo for the SOS Children's Villages in Sarajevo and Gracanica. Some years later both SOS Youth Facilities were enlarged. In autumn 2003 the popular Play-Mobile-Project was introduced in Sarajevo (it has already been in operation very successfully in Romania) with the aim of helping to keep the children off the streets. The kindergarten in the SOS Social Centre Sarajevo has initiated a prevention programme: Children from poor families have the opportunity of a pre-school education in the afternoon as well as counselling is offered to the parents. In the beginning of 2005 one more family strengthening programme was started in the SOS Kindergarten Gorazde.
At present there are two SOS Children's Villages in Bosnia-Herzegovina, two SOS Youth Facilities, two SOS-Kindergartens, two SOS Social Centres, one SOS Vocational Training Centre and one SOS Mother and Staff Training Centre.
