9 Controversial Banned Books

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Satanic Verses - Salman Rushdie

"The book that is worth killing people and burning flags for is not the book that I wrote." Salman Rushdie, Time Magazine , shortly after the publication of The Satanic Verses in 1988.

Banned in most Muslim countries as also in India, the book was called a work of blasphemy by Iran's Ayatollah Khomeina who issued a fatwa against Rushdie for "insulting Islam, the prophet Muhammed and the holy Koran."

As Rushdie saw it, his book "isn't actually about Islam but about migration, metamorphosis, divided selves, love, death, London and Bombay," he told Time.

The Da Vinci Code - Dan Brown

Jesus wasn't divine; he married Mary Magdalene, a woman of possible ill repute, and they had kids. The Vatican appealed to all Christiians to shun the book. The bestseller, which is now being made into a movie starring Tom Hanks, is a breathless thriller with madcap chases through the Louvre, code-crunching and sinister intrigue in Rome (particularly the Vatican).

Princess: A True Story of Life Behind the Veil in Saudi Arabia- Jean Sasson

A true expose of life in a conservative, Muslim society, Princess is the ghost-written story of the life of a royal princess of the ruling Saud dynasty of Saudi Arabia. The book created a furore in the Muslim world and was banned in the Gulf countries. Some deeply disturbing accounts narrated in the novel: teenage klix forced to marry doddering old men; young women killed by drowning, stoning or starved in a padded, windowless cell for sexual misconduct, or worse for having got pregnant after being raped.

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov

Although it was published in Paris, it was soon (1956) to be banned there for being obscene. John Gordon, editor of the popular Sunday Express, had called it "the filthiest book I have ever read" and "sheer unrestrained pornography."

Lolita is the sad story of Humpbert Humpbert, a middle-aged European's obsession with a 12-year-old American girl. The mother's accidental death proves the catalyst for the unlikely pair of lovers to set off on a cross-country trip where Humpbert indulges his most secret fantasies. The book details the relationship, ever-changing, always taboo, between Humpbert and Lolita, a relationship that, by its very nature, seems doomed to ultimate failure.

The Bluest Eye - Toni Morrison

Eleven-year-old black girl Pecola Breedlove prays for blue eyes, "each night without fail" believing her ugly reality will be made beautiful through them. She years to be beautiful so that people will look at her. Instead she is spat upon, ridiculed, and ultimately raped and impregnated by her own father. This novel by the Pulitzer prize-winning author was pulled from a high school in Alaska in 1994 and cited for being too "controversial." The novel was both challenged and banned in Pennsylvania in 1994, and faced challenges in both Florida and Massachusetts due to the book's sexual content.

Madame Bovary - Gustave Flaubert

In 1856, after publishing Madame Bovary, Flaubert and the editors of the Revue de Paris were put on trial because Madame Bovary was considered to be morally offensive. Madame Bovary is the story of Emma Bovary, an unhappily married woman who seeks escape through forbidden relationships with other men. Ultimately, Madame Bovary's indiscretions and her obsession with Romance lead to her downfall.

Lady Chatterley's Lover - D H Lawrence

The publication of the book caused a scandal due to its explicit sex scenes, including previously banned four-letter words, and perhaps particularly because the male lover was working-class. The story concerns a young married woman whose upper-class husband has been paralysed and rendered impotent. Her sexual frustration leads her into an affair with the gamekeeper, Mellors, eventually culminating in their marriage. .

Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger

This novel depicting a teenager's nervous breakdown has been repeatedly banned and challenged for reasons such as "profanity," "sexual references," and the charge that it "undermines morality." As recently as 1983, "the book's contents" were cited as justification to ban the book. The book chronicles Holden Caulfield's journey from innocence to experience and is the quintessential coming-of-age novel--though it's an unusual one, in which the hero tries to cling to the simplicity of childhood, achieving a kind of maturity almost in spite of himself.

Little Red Riding Hood
This could feature in Ripley's Believe it or not! This classic fairy tale, a favourite with children through generations, was banned by two California school districts in 1989. THey found it very disturbing that a little girl should be carrying wine for her grandmother (in one version she is carrying wine and cake for her ailing granny.

The Collapse of the Theory of Evolution in 20 Questions (2.2MB)

The Theory of Evolution has been around for 150 years, and has had a great influence on the way people look at the world. This book considers the invalidity of the theory of evolution at a lay level. Evolutionists' claims on certain matters are responded to with questions that are frequently asked, the meanings of which are not often understood. The answers provided in this book can be found in more scientific detail in other Harun Yahya books such as The Evolution Deceit, and Darwinism Refuted.

The Case for Islamo-Christian Civilization
(0.8MB)

Image

Author: Richard W. Bulliet
vise na: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redir ... 0231127960
pages: 192 pages, September, 2004
Publisher: Columbia University Press
ISBN: 0231127960

A preeminent Middle East scholar argues that beginning in the 1950s American policymakers misread the Muslim world. Instead of focusing on the growing discontent with the unpopular governments, the policymakers saw only a forum for liberal, democratic reforms within those governments. By fostering slogans like "clash of civilizations," and "what went wrong," Americans to this day continue to misread the Muslim world and to miss the opportunity to focus on common ground for building lasting peace. This book offers a fresh perspective on U.S.-Muslim relations and provides the intellectual groundwork upon which to build a peaceful and democratic future in the Muslim world.

"Richard Bulliet's The Case for Islamo-Christian Civilization re-examines most of the pieties of the West about the Muslim world and Islamic politics (and about the West itself) and finds them not only wrong but wrongly conceived. . . . He argues that modern European and Muslim history are deeply intertwined and that one cannot be understood in isolation from the other, thereby launching a profound challenge to teachers, historians and policy-makers."
Juan Cole, University of Michigan, The International Journal of Middle East Studies

"[An] insightful book about Islam and Muslims that actually provides hope for the future. . . . this book is a quick, informative, and encouraging read." Publishers Weekly

Human Rights in Islam

Equality and freedom are the most important principles upon which human rights are based. The modern democracies claim that the world is indebted to them for establishing the right to freedom, to equality and to the other rights that ensued. These countries took the credit for introducing human rights ; and England known for its inherited traditions, took the credit, whereas France claimed that human rights were the outcome of the French Revolution. Other nations denied England and France any credit in this respect and claimed the credit for themselves.

It has been authentically verified that the Faith of Islam introduced and established human rights in its most perfect form and on the widest scale. During the life of the Prophet Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, and during the reign of the Rightly Guided Caliphs, the Islamic states were the first states to adopt the principles of human rights. The modern democracies of today have not yet attained what the Faith of Islam ordained fourteen centuries ago.

In the following pages we will present Islam's role in introducing and establishing the most important principles of human rights, namely equality and freedom.

Death and the Afterlife: A Cultural Encyclopedia
(1.8MB)

Taylor teaches courses at Berkeley on burial and afterlife and has previously published on Hinduism and ancient religions. The only obvious competitors to his first reference work are the Encyclopedia of Death, edited by Robert and Beatrice Kastenbaum (1989. o.p.) and James R. Lewis's Encyclopedia of Afterlife Beliefs and Phenomena (Gale, 1994. o.p.). The Kastenbaum volume asks, "What would one expect in an encyclopedia about death?," but its coverage of topics such as funerals is not very detailed regarding specific traditions. Lewis's work leans toward spiritualism, psychic phenomena, and the occult. Taylor's, on the other hand, is concerned with customs and beliefs relating to death and burial in a number of broad cultural contexts and groupings. The clear, well-written articles cover most major religious and cultural traditions from prehistoric to modern without being overly simplistic. However, some gaps should be corrected in future editions. In the article on burial shrouds, for instance, Taylor does not mention their use in Islam, Sihkism, and the Bah '! faith; there are no articles on the funerary customs of the Sikhs and the Bah '!s; and the entries on resurrection are titled in the form "Resurrection [Religion]," but there is no cross reference to the entry "Qiyama" from the entry "Resurrection, Muslim." All the same, these considerations do not undermine the broad value of this encyclopedia, which will be highly useful in academic, public, and theological libraries as a complement to the other two works mentioned.DWilliam P. Collins, Library of Congress

The Janissaries
(29MB)

The Janissaries comprised an elite corps in the service of the Ottoman Empire. It was composed of war captives and Christian youths pressed into service; all of whom were converted to Islam and trained under the strictest discipline. In many ways, Jannisaries reflected Ottoman society, which was itself dominated by a military elite and where there was much greater social mobility than in Europe. On top of this, the Turks looked upon Europe much as the early Americans viewed the Western Frontier - as a land of adventure, mission and opportunity. David Nicolle examines the history, organisation, weapons and uniforms of these elite Turkish troops.

"www.lib.utexas.edu" map collections

Maps on this server are presented as they were originally published. The original publisher/source and date of the maps are provided on our web pages. The University of Texas Libraries makes no warranties or representations regarding the timeliness or geographic accuracy of any map in this collection.

The majority of our scanning is done using a I2S DigiBook which is a 10000 pixel RGB linear array A0 overhead scanner. We also use a Contex Chroma TX 40" wide format scanner or an Epson 1640 XL for some map formats. Color correction, compositing and image processing operations are performed in Adobe Photoshop CS2.

Over the years, the approach to scanning for the Map Collection site has evolved. Our earliest scans were on a Apple Color One Scanner. Later, we used a Microtek Scan Maker 9800 XL on a Macintosh G4. In the early years of the site, we scanned maps at 150 to 200 dpi. Currently, we usually scan items at a minimum of 400 dpi. Depending on the content/size/smallest detail of the map we will increase that up 800 dpi and on occasion resolution is decreased down to 200 dpi for less detailed maps.

Our web site includes links to many other web sites. These links do not imply the endorsement or approval of the content of the sites. The University of Texas Libraries is not responsible for the content of other sites.

Pro C# 2005 and the .NET 2.0 Platform

Aimed at the reader with some previous programming experience, C# and the .NET Platform provides an enjoyable and well-paced tutorial for learning C# and Mcft's new .NET Framework. This well-written guide is all you need to get onboard with the latest in Windows development.

Today, there are a growing number of titles available for C#. This text strikes an excellent balance between a basic language tutorial with an authoritative presentation of what's new and better in .NET with coverage of the some of the inner details of the platform, including deployment. The author's patient writing style is never dull or overly technical, which will mean this book is a good choice for a wide range of readers approaching C# from a variety of languages including C , Java, and Visual Basic.

At certain points, the author looks at "intermediate language" (IL) bytecodes that underlie the C# language. This is particularly informative in chapters that look at assemblies and deployment. As a tour of the basics of the C# language, this book distinguishes itself with short, effective examples (many of which use a set of classes modeling cars). Coverage of programming Windows Forms is really good, as is the chapter on getting the older COM and .NET components to interoperate. The focus of this book is mostly on traditional client-side development, though it does cover the latest in Web development with sections on basic ASP.NET and Web services, which round out the book.

The author does a good job at explaining how .NET works while bringing readers of different abilities up to speed with C#. Experts will appreciate the detail on class design, COM, and Web services, while beginners will be able to follow the author's well-organized tour of the basics. In all, this combination of strengths makes C# and the .NET Platform an attractive choice in the growing list of titles on Mcft's latest programming language. --Richard Dragan

WhatDoYouCareWhatOtherPeopleThink
A thoughtful companion volume to the earlier Surely You Are Joking Mr. Feynman!. Perhaps the most intriguing parts of the book are the behind-the-scenes descriptions of science and policy colliding in the presidential commission to determine the cause of the Challenger space shuttle explosion; and the scientific sleuthing behind his famously elegant O-ring-in-ice-water demonstration. Not as rollicking as his other memoirs, but in some ways more profound.

33Pages, DJVU, 1964, On the Motion of the Planets around the Sun
Richard Feynman, the rock star of theoretical physics, has left an image that belies his nerdy side. Not many bongo-playing surfer beatniks would have spent hours of their spare time proving Newton's law of elliptical planetary motion using only plane geometry. But Feynman's Lost Lecture: The Motion of Planets Around the Sun shows that the great man did just that. Originally delivered to an introductory physics class at Caltech in 1963, this 76-minute CD and book set contains everything the math-savvy listener needs to savor the pleasures of applied math. Caltech physicist David L. Goodstein and archivist Judith R. Goodstein found the notes and tape amid another professor's papers and set to work making sense of them; unfortunately, photographs of the blackboard drawings didn't survive. The book briefly covers their find and recovery work, then presents the proof as reconstructed--crucial reading if one is to follow the lecture. There's nothing easy about it, as Feynman acknowledges in the lecture:

I am going to give what I will call an elementary demonstration. "Elementary" means that very little is required to know ahead of time in order to understand it, except to have an infinite amount of intelligence.

He means, instead, that he is strictly using geometrical methods to reach his destination, which explains why it was so difficult to reconstruct without his diagrams. His charming Brooklyn accent and good humor show through in this lecture, even if the material is quite a bit drier than his fans might expect. Still, those interested in adding a new dimension to their understanding of this brilliant scientist--and those with a deep interest in Newtonian physics--will find The Motion of Planets Around the Sun a rare and unexpected treat. --Rob Lightner--

QED-StrangeTheoryofLight_Matter
"Physics Nobelist Feynman simply cannot help being original. In this quirky, fascinating book, he explains to laymen the quantum theory of light, a theory to which he made decisive contributions."--The New Yorker

"Feynman's lectures must have been marvelous and they have been turned into an equally entrancing book, a vivid introduction to QED which is leavened and enlivened by his wit. Anyone with a curiosity about physics today should buy it, not only to get to grips with the deepest meaning of quantum theory but to possess a slice of history."--Pedro Waloschek, Nature

http://rapidshare.de/files/4597052/QED- ... .djvu.html

an elegantly readable book of some 163 pages @2.7MB in djvu format, authored by one of physics' greats, on an abstruse subject made simple for everyone.

I've compiled over the years some production resources that have proven most valuable to me. I've used them to learn, for reference, and to pass down when we get a new engineer in the studio. Know matter how much I learn or how much I "think I Know" it's always nice to have some of these titles for reference. They range in knowledge level and I'm sure alot of you have a great deal of these but maybe not all complied in one location. And for those who do not have them I'm sure you will find them useful.
