1. IntroStanding out from the pop/punk shadow that dominates the sunny Southern California music scene, Trespassers William create their own brand of lush soundscapes made up of touches of melancholy and ethereal movements of sounds that are perfectly suited for overcast days and quiet nights. UK's Bang Magazine described the bands first release Different Stars as "a superb album, full of slow, country-inflected love songs." While Logo Magazine goes on to describe Anna- Lynne's voice as "likened to Aimee Mann and Hope Sandoval." Trespassers William truly spawn a sound all their own. Anna-Lynne's lilting vocals and haunting songs, hearken back to those who have come before but move well beyond, into a realm that can only be described as purely the sounds and moods of Trespassers William.
1. Szervi ElegtelensegI've come to expect a lot of things from Aaron Funk and his Venetian Snares. But not this. In the past Funk was the master of splattery, maniacal drum and bass, all chopped up and poundingly complex, relentless and completely brain frying. Which I obviously love, but on this here new record, everything has changed. There's still plenty of maddeningly complex drum programming, but now it's merely a framework for klix songs, gorgeous, achingly mournful and surpsrisingly melodic songs. Piano, soaring strings, delicate pizzicato melodies, horns, moaning cellos, even occasional smokey torch song vocals. Remember the Aphex Twin song "Boy/Girl", quite possibly my favorite Aphex track ever, and rightfully so, a totally catchy, immediately memorable string section, wrapped in spikey swaths of drill and bass. Well, this is basically a whole record like that, but with a decidedly more Eastern European vibe, minor key and melancholy, with entire tracks of just strings and piano, NO rhythms. It sounds a bit like Arvo Part jamming with Aphex Twin if you can imagine that. One of the highlights is track three, a cover of Rezso Seress' notorious "Hungarian Suicide Song" which ends up sounding like some lost track from Portishead or Lamb. Slinky and sexy and so so good. The whole record is just amazing, every track offers up something new, whether it's dark doleful gypsy strings, mournful minimal piano, ridiculously intricate drum programming or all three somehow perfectly melded together. Haunting, deeply emotional and totally intense.

The ambitious Standing Up Straight builds on the eclecticism of the EPs collected on The Legendary Wolfgang Press, further broadening the trio's horizons by layering their dark, unforgiving sound with elements of industrial and classical music. While "Hammer the Halo" and "Rotten Fodder" in particular stand out as two of the group's most aggressive efforts, the intensity level remains high throughout -- a challenging, even punishing album, but a rewarding one as well.Code: Select all

What is a perfect album? One could make an argument that a perfect album is one that sets out a specific set of artistic criteria and then fulfills them flawlessly. In that respect, and many others, the Undertones' 1979 debut is a perfect album. The Northern Ireland quintet's brief story is no different than that of literally dozens of other bands to form in the wake of the Clash and, more importantly, the Buzzcocks, but the group infuses so much unabashed joy in their two-minute three-chord pop songs, and there's so little pretension in their unapologetically teenage worldview, that even the darker hints of life in songs like the suicide-themed "Jimmy Jimmy" are delivered with a sense of optimism at odds with so many of their contemporaries. There's no fewer than three all-time punk-pop classics here; besides that song, the singles "Teenage Kicks" and "Get Over You" are simple declarations of teenage hormonal lust that somehow manage to be cute instead of Neanderthal; perhaps it's Feargal Sharkey's endearingly adenoidal whine, or the chipper way the O'Neill brothers pitch in on schoolboy harmonies, like a teenage Irish Kinks. All of the other 13 songs, even the 47-second blip "Casbah Rock," are nearly to that level of brilliance, with the frenetic "klix Don't Like It" a particular standout. The Rykodisc CD adds seven demos and single sides, and also includes an entirely different, punkier version of "True Confessions" than the nervous, new wave-influenced throb of the version on the original U.K. vinyl.Code: Select all

Badly Drawn Boy, reveals the true depths of his songwriting and arranging talents. While his debut, The Hour of the Bewilderbeast, knocked us dead with his fey, indie-folk-rock sensibilities, Have You Fed the Fish shows a musician striving for top-shelf greatness in the pantheon of British pop, à la the Beatles, Oasis, and Radiohead. Lush arrangements with strings, horns, a very grand piano, and guitars abound, with a richness rarely found in pop and rock music these days. Gough's songwriting is topnotch and by turns catchy and clever, stinging and personal. But you've been warned: this album gives us less of the indie-pop hero you may want to love, and more of a classic rock idol in the making. Beck/Elliott Smith producer Tom Rothrock is at the helm, and the glossy sheen that results may offend some lo-fi "slacker pop" aficionados.

1. Ghost Rider In The Sky (S. Jones)...a pretty great album. It's an unreleased studio session from the self portrait era. It's fun because of between song chatter. Hear Dylan get songs bounced off him, percy's song, and please crawl out your window, and refuse them, but sometimes he accepts like "Honey just allow me one more chance" and it's cool. Song to Woody is excellent.

Wonderful stuff from the May 70 Harrison session. This is essential listening, from the goregeous Gates Of Eden to Song To Woody and the throaways such as Matchbox I just don't turn this one off. Quality is A1. Just to get some balance or verbose lunacy (take yer pick!)

Album Description
What's a budding musical genius to do in the pent-up lull between albums? Mercury Prize-winning singer-songwriter Badly Drawn Boy (nee Damon Gough), in his spare time between heralded debut THE HOUR OF BEWILDERBEEST, and a follow-up to be released later in 2002, approached the filmmakers adapting Nick Hornby's acclaimed novel ABOUT A BOY about the soundtrack for the film starring Hugh Grant. There's no question to the logic of the combination as Gough's sublimely literate, disaffected yet still charmingly breezy pop music fits the story of life's apparent losers at two stages of life, one an apathetic womanizer approaching his 40s, the other a bullied misfit boy passing into his teens, between whom an unlikely friendship ensues. A folky singer/songwriter scoring songs to help set the tone of a movie about unlikely friendship could stir up memories of Cat Stevens's unreleased soundtrack for "Harold & Maude," a fair enough assessment. In a similar fashion (but in its own way), Badly Drawn Boy's take on ABOUT A BOY weaves a mournful, yet upbeat tapestry drawing from its source material while managing to enrich the story itself. There are even some pop megahit hooks such as in the rolling "Silent Sigh" and in the head-bobbing, ostensible theme song "Something To Talk About."
1. HighJames Blunt's debut album, Back To Bedlam, is without doubt one of the best albums to be released this year.
Once in a while an album comes along that captures the heart and mind of those listening to it and can transport the listener to another place.... this is one such album. After spending the majority of his adulthood protecting the Queen and her Mother and leading troops into the war torn city of Kosovo, James Blunt left the army last year and armed only with some dodgy demos, almost immediately found himself with a manager and a publishing deal. It wasn't long before he had the record deal he wanted. Since then he has managed to record an album that is not only getting rave reviews from the music industry press, but also from those that are generally much harsher critics... his peers.
Back To Bedlam features 10 beautiful heartfelt songs. A breathtaking debut album which smacks of the personal experiences, both tragic and uplifting, that have shaped his live to date. It's a masterful debut and one that you mustn't allow to pass you by.
