Maria Kalaniemi, a master of free-bass button accordion, is one of Finland's leading contemporary accordionists. Once a member of pioneering groups Niekku and Aldargaz, from the famed Sibelius Acdemy Folk Music Department, where she now teaches, her roots are in folk and classical music but her sights and abilities go far beyond existing styles. Technically brilliant as a player, and adept at improvisation, she is also a very powerful, intuitive and sensitive composer, with pieces that stylistically touch in numerous areas but feature her own personality as the driving force. Melody is the meaning and with Maria, listeners are sure to feel her message deeply.

Maria has released many albums, the latest are the duo and live trio CDs with pianist Timo Alakotila. She is also a member of the international accordion collective Accordion Tribe, Swedish-Finnish music group Ramunder, UNTO Tango Orchestra as well as many other projects. Maria has toured and performed with these groups and other projects throughout Europe, USA and in Canada. Her new work is centered around solo accordion pieces.

Everybody knows the famous phrase - Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, its Superman! But in this case well say: Is it a singer? Is it an actress? Is it a tv-personality? Yes, its a superwoman named Birgit!
Birgit played the female leading role of a Chinese acrobat in the remake of a
Dutch classic knights tale called Floris - the movie, a priority release in
the Holiday season of 2004. And yeah, she co-hosted the weekly Countdown chart show on commercial TV outlet Veronica. She lends her voice to numerous major cartoon-series: Sponge Bob The Movie, My Dad is a Rockstar, Ice Age and so on. She starred in a popular Dutch television series about sex and relationships. On stage she played a tough girl in a Dutch box office hit musical.

As if that isnt enough she also starred in David Mamets stageplay Sexual
Perversity. Okay, weve proved our point that Birgit is a most versatile
artist but were just warming up!
Birgits exciting new music album is what we want to talk about here:
True Stories I Made Up, a BirgitMusic production, licensed by Zip Records, is
quite different from her previous album (released in the Netherlands). Pop songs with a clear verse-chorus-verse structure, like her hit singles from the past (A Little Famous, I Know and Few Like You) have remained. But thats about the sole similarity between this album and her successful debut album, Few Like Me (Virgin Records, 2001).
On True Stories I Made Up Birgit is confidently steering into another direction, without loosing hit potential. Tough, self-confident songs go hand in hand with Birgits more personal, intimate style. Her new sound? A mixture of Gwen Stefani, Blondie, Kate Bush and Dido. Listen to the irresistible track Not Just Anyone and first single Guniang, and youll surely catch our drift.
This album, her USA debut, more or less documents Birgits personal history of the last two years. She likes to describe her new album as a tasty little bag full of candy in different flavours. Some sweet, some sour, some bitter and definitely some spicy and salty ones. True Stories I Made Up sounds like Birgit growing up in public. The girl and her music have both matured considerably. She gives us something to dance and shake our heads to but were also given some slow, soulful songs such as Sleeping Pill and her painfully beautiful cover of Wuthering Heights .
