A kad smo kod skoro zaboravljenih igrača, kako se zove onaj Francuz koji je Arsenalu zabio gol na Highburiju i Liverpol pobijedio? Camara? ili sam pogriješio ime... Ekipa imala rezervne zelene dresove...

Pooper baca drkicu na Van Dijka
Ninety minutes watching Virgil van Dijk, the world’s best defender
By James Pearce Jan 12, 2020
Before kick-off….
As captain Jordan Henderson tossed up with Toby Alderweireld, Van Dijk made a point of walking around the pitch to embrace every single one of his team-mates. On each occasion there were words of encouragement.
He had paired off with fellow centre-back Joe Gomez for the passing drills during the warm-up. The England international, who describes his senior partner as “like a big brother”, had seen the funny side after being playfully nutmegged. They are close on and off the pitch. Gomez and Van Dijk share a love of basketball and often shoot hoops together at the Melwood training ground. Dejan Lovren sometimes joins in but gets accused by Van Dijk of lowering the standard.
Aside from his quality, Van Dijk is incredibly durable. He’s been ever-present in both the Premier League and the Champions League so far this season. Van Dijk’s mental toughness is underlined by the fact he hasn’t missed a Premier League game for Liverpool since January 2018. He should have done — he played through the pain barrier with two cracked ribs last season.
1st minute: There’s danger when Paulo Gazzaniga’s long punt goes over the head of Gomez. However, Van Dijk is alert and reacts quickly to cover before Lucas Moura can capitalise as he hooks the ball to safety. He’s then perfectly placed to nod away Harry Winks’ cross as he urges Trent Alexander-Arnold to get tighter to Serge Aurier. His leadership is evident from the off.
7th minute: Decision making is one of his biggest strengths. He’s able to perfectly assess situations in the heat of battle. When the clubs met at Anfield lastMarch, he was lauded for how he handled a late two-on-one breakaway. Sensing that Moussa Sissoko was desperate to pick out Son Heung-min, he blocked the angle for the pass, forced Sissoko to take the shot on and the Frenchman lashed horribly wide. Here, he opted to track the run of Moura rather than close down Son, who curled wide from the edge of the box.
15th minute: With Tottenham dropping off inside their own half, there’s little pressure on Liverpool’s centre-backs. Remarkably, Van Dijk has already made 25 passes. He’s constantly talking to Gomez and the two full-backs either side of them. When attacks are building, he’s pointing exactly where the ball should go next. He barks at Gomez to move wider to give him a better angle for a pass.
He’s so vocal, constantly organising and cajoling team-mates. When Henderson and James Milner were both out injured last season, Jurgen Klopp asked his players to vote for a new captain and vice-captain who would then be third and fourth in command in the dressing room. Van Dijk was the overwhelming winner with Georginio Wijnaldum in second place.
21st minute: When Henderson is caught in possession, there’s a let-off as Christian Eriksen’s finish is weak. “Hey!” screams Van Dijk, who gestures for Liverpool to wake-up. The skipper already has his arm in the air apologetically.
22nd minute: If there’s one criticism of Van Dijk, it’s that he doesn’t score enough goals. Considering his aerial prowess, he should have more than three under his belt so far this season. He certainly should have opened the scoring here. When Andy Robertson’s corner isn’t cleared, Henderson hooks it invitingly towards the far post. Van Dijk is unmarked four yards out but nods too close to Gazzaniga, who parries to safety.
27th minute: When Aurier tries to pick out the run of Moura down the inside-left channel, Van Dijk has to really stretch his legs for the first time. He showcases both his pace and strength as he gets there first, makes the tackle and puts Liverpool back on the attack. It all looks so effortless. As Robertson sizes up his options, Van Dijk rolls his arms, urging him to move the ball quicker, demanding that he knocks it inside to Gomez. The Scotsman duly obliges.
29th minute: Moura threatens to latch on to another long punt forward. However, Van Dijk cuts across him, causing him to stumble and Alisson dashes out of his box to nod away. Cynical? You bet. Clever? Undoubtedly. The home fans are howling for a free-kick but Martin Atkinson isn’t interested.
Son and Moura change positions to give Van Dijk something different to think about but he remains unruffled. They get no change out of him. Van Dijk credits the daily “nightmare” of facing Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane in training as helping him go to the next level as a defender.
37th minute: Firmino latches on to Salah’s pass and finishes emphatically to break the deadlock. A jubilant Van Dijk runs from the halfway line to join the celebrations, mimicking the Brazilian’s trademark kung-fu kick celebration before patting the goalscorer on the head.
45th minute: When Salah fires wide, Van Dijk has both hands above his head applauding the Egyptian for the mazy run that took him clear. He then apologises to Robertson for over-hitting a lofted pass. Van Dijk has had 79 touches in the first half – more than anyone else on the pitch. He has completed 65 passes, including 33 inside Tottenham’s half. It’s a sign of Liverpool’s dominance that Alderweireld leads the hosts’ passing stats with just 12.
55th minute: There’s a change of approach from Tottenham after the break and a greater show of ambition. As Moura, Son and Dele Alli start to press, there’s suddenly some pressure exerted on Liverpool’s backline. Van Dijk remains cool. When Gomez is hurried and misplaces a pass, which goes straight out of play, he doesn’t react. He simply gestures for Robertson to drop deeper alongside him.
57th minute: Van Dijk is scared of spiders and snakes but not match-saving tackles. When Gomez slips, Liverpool are left exposed as Alli races forward. Van Dijk initially backs off, assessing the situation carefully. Then at full stretch he makes a perfectly timed challenge with his left boot. As Alli tumbles, there are howls for a penalty but it’s a top-class piece of defending. Van Dijk is so alert to what’s around him as he reacts quickly and gets to the loose ball before Moura.
66th minute: Robertson is fortunate to avoid a card after over-stretching and catching young debutant Japhet Tanganga with his studs. During the break in play, Van Dijk is deep in conversation with Gomez and then Henderson and Wijnaldum about providing cover and tracking runners. Tottenham throw caution to the wind with the introduction of Erik Lamela and Giovani Lo Celso off the bench.
75th minute: Van Dijk puffs out his cheeks after Son skies a golden chance to restore parity. Lo Celso is then equally wasteful. It’s all getting increasingly frantic as Liverpool cling on to their narrow advantage. The Liverpool centre-back calls for calm and a greater show of composure.
86th minute: Van Dijk riles the home fans by taking an age over a free kick close to halfway. Jose Mourinho fumes on the touchline but he’s no stranger to the dark arts himself. Van Dijk then intervenes to prevent Lo Celso from releasing Son with a crucial interception. His positional play is so good that it feels like he rarely has to break sweat. He hasn’t put a foot wrong all night.
90th minute: Tempers get frayed at the death as Gomez and Lamela square up to each other. Van Dijk steps in to pull them apart. He doesn’t lose his rag – one booking in 30 starts this season is testament to that. “It’s almost perfection to watch him play,” was the verdict of former England international Martin Keown in the build-up to the game and he certainly lives up to that billing. He has 129 touches in total and completes 116 passes with an accuracy of 94 per cent.
Post-game
At the final whistle, Van Dijk has both arms aloft. He embraces Gomez and then Moura before shaking the hands of the officials. He walks to applaud the away end but his celebrations are understated compared to Henderson, Robertson and Alexander-Arnold, who toss their shirts into the travelling Kop.
Van Dijk walks off deep in conversation with Gomez. He’s the first visiting player to leave the field. Liverpool haven’t conceded a league goal since their partnership was rekindled last month. Klopp’s men have set a new club record of 38 league games unbeaten – surpassing the previous best set in 1894. They have also become the first team across Europe’s big five leagues to ever take 61 points from the first 21 games of a season.
The players’ reward is two days off but Van Dijk isn’t in the mood for partying. In the away dressing room there’s a sense of frustration rather than elation over what was a gritty but scrappy performance.
“We want to analyse this game and do much better,” Van Dijk tells the waiting media. “Especially in the second half, they were pressing us and made it very difficult for us. We should have done better. There is still room for improvement. We’re in a good situation but there’s still so much work we can do to make it easier at times.”
