Khamsa : the will to create music fed and inspired by popular tunes from all of the Arabic world, in total harmony with the Occident. This meeting gives birth to an astonishing music, where oriental melodies flirt with jazz, blues and classical to appeal to the Occidental audience. The Comptoir Darna is a unique and well known place in Marrakech, a meeting point wrapped by the energy and the conviviality of Oriental nights. DJ's and traditional musicians from the end of the street to the end of the world gather together there. The concept behind this album arose spontaneously, as Claude Challe sought to capture the nightly atmosphere of the club. Creating an organic "oriental cabaret", musicians, dancers and singers from all over Morocco revisit popular tunes together until the end of the night before a cosmopolitan audience who echoes in the chorus.

Ali Farka Touré - The River

One of the most internationally successful West African musicians of the '90s, Ali Farka Touré was described as "the African John Lee Hooker" so many times that it probably began to grate on both Touré's and Hooker's nerves. There is a lot of truth to the comparison, however, and it isn't exactly an insult. The guitarist, who also played other instruments such as calabash and bongos, shared with Hooker (and similar American bluesmen like Lightnin' Hopkins) a predilection for low-pitched vocals and midtempo, foot-stomping rhythms, often playing with minimal accompaniment.

Touré's delivery was less abrasive than Hooker's, and the general tone of his material somewhat sweeter. Widespread success on the order of Hooker was somewhat elusive, though, as Touré sang in several languages, and only occasionally in English. As he once told Option, his are songs "about education, work, love, and society." If he and Hooker sounded quite similar, it's probably not by conscious design, but due to the fact that both drew inspiration from African rhythmic and musical traditions that extend back many generations.

Touré was approaching the age of 50 when he came to the attention of the burgeoning world music community in the West via a self-titled album in the late '80s. In the following years he toured often in North America and Europe, and recorded frequently, sometimes with contributions from Taj Mahal and members of the Chieftains. In 1990, Touré retreated from music entirely to devote himself to his rice farm, but was convinced by his producer to again pick up the guitar to record 1994's Talking Timbuktu, on which he was joined by Ry Cooder. It was his most well-received effort to date, earning him a Grammy for Best World Music Album, but it was also proof that not all Third World-First World collaborations have to dilute their non-Western elements to achieve wide acceptance. However, Touré found the success to be draining and again retreated to tend his farm.

He didn't release a record on American shores for five years afterward; he finally broke the silence in 1999 with Niafunké, which discarded the collaborative approach in favor of a return to his musical roots. Then, once again, Touré stepped away from the limelight. In 2005, perhaps partly to keep his name familiar to music lovers, Nonesuch issued (for the first time on compact disc) Red & Green, two albums Touré recorded in the early '80s, packaged together as a two-disc set. In the Heart of the Moon was also released in 2005. Touré died on March 7, 2006, from the bone cancer that he had been battling for years; however, he was able to complete one last album before passing. George Winston - Complete Solo Recordings 1972-1996 [BOX SET]



Self-described "rural folk piano" player George Winston was among the earliest and most successful proponents of the genre of contemporary instrumental music later dubbed new age. Although born in Michigan in 1949, he was raised primarily in Montana, the extreme seasonal changes he experienced there later greatly influencing the pastoral feel of his music. Even as a child, Winston preferred instrumental music over vocal performances, counting among his early heroes Booker T. & the MG's, Floyd Cramer, and the Ventures; he did not take up music until after high school, however, beginning with organ and electric piano but moving to acoustic piano by 1971. Influenced by the stride piano of Fats Waller and Teddy Wilson, Winston turned from rock and R&B to jazz, and soon released his first solo piano effort, Ballads and Blues 1972, after which he mysteriously retired from music for the next several years.

Discovering the music of the legendary New Orleans R&B pianist Professor Longhair in 1979 was the epiphany Winston was seeking to inspire a return to performing; signing to the Windham Hill label, between 1980 and 1982 he recorded a trilogy of albums -- Autumn, December, and Winter Into Spring -- of impressionistic, seasonal-themed piano musings which laid much of the groundwork for the new age boom to follow. Winston's music continued to grow in popularity and influence in the years to follow, but in typically enigmatic fashion, he virtually dropped from sight for the remainder of the 1980s, resurfacing only in 1986 to score a reading of The Velveteen Rabbit by actress Meryl Streep.

Finally, in 1991, Winston returned to action, completing his seasonal cycle with Summer; Forest followed three years later. In 1996, he paid tribute to another of his greatest influences with Linus & Lucy: The Music of Vince Guaraldi. A compilation album, All the Seasons of George Winston, was released in the spring of 1998, followed a year later by Plains. The new millennium brought anniversary editions of several of his landmark albums, including Autumn, December, and Winter Into Spring, as well as the 2001 album Remembrance: A Memorial Benefit, which was Winston's response to the tragic events of September 11, 2001. His 2002 release, Night Divides the Day, focused on the music of one of his earliest influences, the Doors. Montana: A Love Story from 2004 was inspired by Winston's childhood in Montana. Umm Kulthum (born Fatma Ebrahim Elbeltagi) (May 4, 1904 – February 3, 1975). Various spellings include Om Koultoum, Om Kalthoum, Oumme Kalsoum, and Umm Kolthoum. In Turkish, she is named Ümmü Gülsüm. She was an Egyptian singer, songwriter, and actress. Born in Tamay ez-Zahayra, next to El Senbellawein, she is known as the Star of the East (kawkab el-sharq). More than three decades after her death, she is still recognized as the Arab world's most famous and distinguished singer of the 20th century. Her funeral was attended by over 4 million mourners—one of the largest gatherings in history—and descended into pandemonium when the crowd seized control of her coffin and carried it to a mosque that they considered her favorite, before later releasing the coffin for burial.
Kulthum had a contralto vocal range. It is known that she had the ability to sing as low as the second octave, as well as the ability to sing as high as between the seventh and the eighth octaves at her vocal peak; yet she also could easily sing over a range surpassing two octaves near the end of her career. Her remarkable ability to produce approximately 14,000 vibrations per second with her vocal cords, her unparalleled vocal strength (no commercial microphone utilized for singing could withstand its strength, forcing her to stand at a 1- to 3-meter radius away from one), and her voice's unique and breathtaking beauty that surpassed convention arguably made her the most incomparable voice of all time. Her ability and capability to sing every single Arabic scale makes her one of only five women in the history of the Arab world to be able to do this, along with Asmahan, Fairouz, and Sabah and the latest zekra . In her final years, recordings show a slight coarsening of her voice and a loss of the silken golden thread of coloratura that, in her earlier years, in songs such as Bairam al-Tunsi's “Beredaak”, she displayed with an ease and stupendous nonchalance.
Umm Kulthum has been a significant influence on a number of musicians, both in the Arab World and beyond. Among others, Jah Wobble has claimed her as a significant influence on his work. Bob Dylan has been quoted as saying, "She's great. She really is. Really great."[5][6] Maria Callas, Jean-Paul Sartre, Marie Laforêt, Salvador Dalí, Nico, Bono and Led Zeppelin are also known to be admirers of Kulthum's music. One of her best known songs, “Enta Omri,” has been the basis of many reinterpretations, including one 2005 collaborative project involving Israeli and Egyptian artists.
She was referred to as "The Lady" by Charles de Gaulle, and is regarded as "The Incomparable Voice" by Maria Callas. Umm Kulthum is remembered in Egypt, the Middle East, and the Arab world as one of the greatest singers and musicians to have ever lived. It is difficult to accurately measure her vocal range at its peak, as most of her songs were recorded live, and she was careful not to strain her voice due to the extended length of her songs. Even today, she has retained a near-mythical status among young Egyptians. She is also notably popular in Israel among Jews and Arabs alike, and her records continue to sell about a million copies a year. In 2001, the Egyptian government opened the Kawkab al-Sharq (Star of the East) Museum in the singer's memory. Housed in a pavilion on the grounds of Cairo's Manesterly Palace, the collection includes a range of Umm Kulthum's personal possessions, including her trademark sunglasses and scarves, along with photographs, recordings, and other archival material

Kayhan Kalhor & Mohammad Reza Shajarian - Night Silence Desert



Kayhan Kalhor is the world's leading exponent of the kamancheh, an upright spike fiddle. Renowned for his work with Ghazal, a group that bridges Indian and Persian music, he applies a similar approach to Iranian folk and classical forms on Night Silence Desert. The Radif (Persian classical repertoire) grew from folk forms, but over the centuries the music evolved from its simple rural origins into an elaborately ornamented and rigorously structured style. This album doesn't take the music back to its basics--there's too much refined virtuosity on display. But the musicians infuse their playing with a vigor and crisp cohesion that belies the record's fitful production. First Kalhor convened 11 strummers, drummers, and flute blowers in Tehran in 1994 to lay down the sweeping instrumental passages. Four years later he and vocalist Shajarian finished the record in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The two men exchange intricate call-and-response melodies that radiate impassioned exhilaration
Born in 1940 in the city of Mash’had in northeastern Iran, Mohammad Reza Shajarian began singing spiritual songs at the age five under the supervision of his father. Only a few years later his precocious talent was to be renowned throughout the town of Mash’had. In spite of his religious upbringing, at the age of twelve he was familiarizing himself with the traditional song repertoire and the first piece he was to sing was the Gham-Angiz Goosheh of Dashti. He was also interested at the same time in popular music from Khorasan and the other regions of Iran. His focus at first was on the local folk music of his native province, Khorasan, but later at the age of twelve he studied the traditional repertoire, the Radif. After college, he became a schoolteacher and was to find himself at much greater liberty to study all forms of traditional music and gradually relinquish religious singing. What follows is a resume of the major landmarks in Mohammad Reza Shajarian’s artistic career. On the arrival in Teheran he met Ahmad Ebadi, the great Setar master who is today sole heir to the musical tradition upheld by his family. His meeting of the late Esmail Mehrtash was to initiate him in the fine nuances of traditional singing, in popular melodies and in artistic technique.
Right from the earliest age he learnt how to sing the different versions of the Radif from the most highly reputed singers such as Reza Gholi Mirza Zelli, Ghamar-ol Molouk Vaziri, Eghbal-Soltan Azar, and Taaj Esfahani Noor-Ali Khan Boroomand and Taher Zadeh Esfahani.

Kudsi Erguner Ensemble - Rembetiko from Istanbul

Kudsi Erguner lives and works in Paris as musician (Ney-flute, which is a reed flute), composer, musicologist, teacher, author, and translator.
Erguner comes from a family of Turkish musicians. His contact with many famous musicians from the older generation, who continually passed through his parents house, and his involvement with various Sufi-brotherhoods, whose music and teachings Erguner studied, left their decisive marks on him. He received his training directly from his father, Ulvi Erguner, who was the last great master of the Ney.
Kudsi Erguner has given concerts and played in major festivals throughout the world. He has researched the music of India, Pakistan, and Turkey, grounded diverse music ensembles, recorded numerous albums, and has worked with such well known artists as Peter Gabriel (Passion, US), Maurice Béjart, Peter Brook, Georges Aperghis, Didier Lockwood, and Michel Portal. Erguner has thus made authoritative contributions to World Music. He has documented and revived nearly forgotten musical traditions and brought them to the attention of the Western public, securing them a place within Europe's cultural inheritance.

Kara Nomadica

Kara Nomadica is a Middle-Eastern fusion band with a sound inspired by traditional Arabic and Turkish rhythms and maqamat (scales) as well as modern industrial/techno music. Its members have well over a century of combined musical experience. The members of Kara Nomadica play a vast array of traditional instruments, including oud, saz, darabuka, arabic tabla, riq, frame drum, dholla, davul, muzzar, ney, and didjeridoo?all solidly anchored in the 21st century by the fretless bass guitar and sythesizer. Juan Martin - Musica Alhambra



He is especially recognised abroad, where the majority of his artistic career has developed. Juan Martín is a guitarist with an impeccable technique. He has played on the most important international stages, like the Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Centre (New York) and the Royal Albert Hall (London). He has also taken part in the most important international festivals: Edinburgh, Montreux…
Apart from his mastery of the flamenco guitar, Juan Martín has also been involved in experimental and innovative projects, like his research into the Moorish origins of flamenco, or other projects in which he has taken part with musicians like Mark Isham. He has an extensive oeuvre, as he has recorded over ten albums, although most of them have only been released abroad. He is also the author of several texts on the flamenco guitar (El Arte Flamenco de la Guitarra and La Guitarra Flamenca). Among other achievements, at least one deserves a mention: he was the first flamenco guitarist who recorded an album with the Royal Philarmonic Orchestra.

Makis Ablianitis - Bahar & Bahar Live Under The Sky

Makis Ablianitis is an inspired composer and one of the best guitar players in Greece.
His relationship with music began at the age of 15 when he got his first guitar. He studied theory by attending seminary courses of Theodoros Antoniou and at the Center of Contemporary Musical Research. Following this, he studied higher theory by graduating from the classes of Fugas and Orchestration with excellent. He concluded his studies at the Berklee Music College of Boston with a scholarship. The period of his studies at Berklee was decisive for his later course as a musician, because at the same time of his studies he had the ability to play with renowned musicians of the Boston jazz scene.

Ablianitis also in involved with the tuition of jazz music by teaching jazz guitar, modern harmony and orchestration at various auditoriums in Athens. In 1993 he formed the quartet "Jazz Steps" and in 1995 the group "Jazz Crew". During the period of 1996 - 1998 he was a member of the ethnic group of Michalis Nikoloudis and Omar Faruk Tekbilek, participating in the concerts they gave in Greece and abroad.
His debut took place in 1997 with the album "FLAME KEEPER" (THESIS / 1997). An integral part for his carrier also was his collaboration with the "ARTS, DANCE & MUSIC PRODUCTIONS", in November 1999. It involved the very successful BROADWAY shows with American performers.
At his second album 'BAHAR' (LIBRA MUSIC / 2000), Ablianitis met the world famous Indian flute player, Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, and one of the best Greek singers, Manolis Lidakis. Not only 'BAHAR' is a very interesting project, but also it was hit at once. Makis became famous and many labels ask for licence to include tracks of BAHAR in their collections.
On January 2004 was released MOSAIC (LIBRA MUSIC), the album of the famous Greek singer Maria Farantouri (featuring: Glen Velez, Fuat Saka, Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, Ross Daly). Makis Ablianitis has given 3 songs to Farantouri and made all the arrangements of the album.
Makis Ablianitis has numerous participations in festivals and concerts in Greece, Turkey and FYROM.

Bilja Krstic & Bistrik Orchestra's aim is to translate folklore into contemporary art, blending traditional Balkan music, acapella songs and ethnic grooves with elements of improvisation and a modern approach to the music.

Vocalist Bilja Krstic has been on the Yugoslav pop scene since the 1970s and she has written music for Belgrade's National Theatre. After her successful career in pop music, Bilja Krstic decided to record material that has been close to her heart since her childhood. For more than five years, she patiently collected obscure folk songs from the territory of Kosovo, south Serbia, Macedonia, the Vlach district in east Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary. This is the third album that has resulted from this research. The material has been performed at more than 170 concerts across the world and in her home country and Krstic has been acclaimed for her sincere stage presence and beautiful voice.

Kulsan organised a series of concerts in which Sufi music from Anatolia and spanish flamenco are presented together. They were mainly interested in the mutual influence between these forms of music from Spain and Turkey. The concert, "From sufi to Flamenco" was presented in the following locations arch 21st 1999 in the Tropical institute in Amsterdam, March 24th in the city theatre of Nijmegen. March 25th in the Korzo theatre in The Hague, March 26 the ICC intercultural center in Gent,.March 27th in Music center De Doelen in roîterdam and March 28 in Vredenburg Music center in Utrecht. Besides these six concerts there was also a radio performance on March 22d tor the VPRO radio program "De Wandelende Tak"
The group, comprising the very best of musicians from both traditions, was selected by Turkish kanun player Tahir Aydoğdu and Dutch flamenco guitarist Eric Vaarzon Morel. They also designed the program for the concert.
The Sufi music is sung by Bilal Demiryürek, imam of the Yenimahalle Mosque of Ankara. The flamenco is sung by the famous Yeye de cadiz from Spain.
As you can make out from the above list, the concerts were not only pleasing to the car. but also to the eye, sema (dervish dance) was performed by Engin Kökçü from Turkey, and flamenco dance by mes contreras from the Netherlands.The cd contains pieces of Turkish Sufî music, Ivhich has its roots in l ith and 12 th century Anatolia. There examples of three different musical forms, ayin, ilahi and sema. There are also flamenco pieces, some separete, some mixed in with the Sufi music. Other pieces illustrate how the two musical traditions have ifluenced one another historically.With this project we also wish to lend expression to the filosophy of the founder of Turkish Sufi. Mevlana, who said that all people are hrothers, despite religious differences, and should live together peacefully.
