Tipično, ne može nas zaobići top 6 klub taman baraž da igramo za plasman u kup. Čak su me i Donsi iznenadili.

‘He has to adapt to the position again’ – Return of Klopp’s ‘complete midfielder’ overshadowed by gifted teens

By James Pearce

Naby Keita is no stranger to dealing with adversity.

The Liverpool midfielder was just 16 when he first left his home city of Conakry, the capital of Guinea, on a solo mission to realise his dream of launching a professional career in Europe.

Rejected by French clubs Lorient and Le Mans, Keita refused to throw in the towel. When former Celtic defender and fellow Guinean Bobo Balde organised a talent-spotting tournament in Marseille two years later, Keita finally caught the eye.

Ligue 2 outfit FC Istres gave him the chance he craved after a successful trial in the summer of 2013. His first contract was worth £900 per week.

“Within 10 minutes of his first training session with us, I’d seen enough. It was clear we had to sign him,” recalled Istres’ sporting director Frederic Arpinon.

“He was young but he was special. Straightaway, he reminded me of Andres Iniesta. His technique was excellent. He was so good on the ball, he was strong and he could pass it well. When he lost the ball, he worked so hard to win it back. He could do everything.”

After scoring on his debut against Nimes, Keita didn’t look back. Within eight months he had been snapped up by RB Salzburg for £1.35 million. Back-to-back league and cup doubles followed in Austria before moving to their sister club RB Leipzig in 2016.

The good times kept on rolling. Keita scored eight goals and provided seven assists in 31 league matches as the Bundesliga new boys qualified for the Champions League for the first time. European football’s elite were soon battling to secure his services.

Liverpool had two bids rejected in the summer of 2017, with Leipzig adamant that Keita wasn’t for sale during that window. Sporting director Michael Edwards successfully outflanked rival suitors, including Barcelona and Bayern Munich, by thrashing out a deal that saw Keita stay put for another 12 months before heading to Merseyside in July 2018 for £52.75 million.

Jurgen Klopp described him as “the complete midfielder” but 14 months on, the third-most expensive signing in the club’s history is still battling to live up to both the hype and that lofty price tag.

There were flashes of brilliance during his debut season at Anfield but he struggled to nail down a place in Klopp’s side. He didn’t start more than four successive Premier League matches.

Injuries hampered his progress and at times, the iconic No 8 shirt he requested — Steven Gerrard was his father Sekou’s idol — weighed heavily on his shoulders. Thirty three appearances in all competitions yielded just three goals and a solitary assist.

Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup tie at Stadium MK represented a fresh start for Keita — his first competitive outing for Liverpool since he limped out of the Champions League semi-final first leg against Barcelona with a groin problem back in May.

The 24-year-old got just over an hour under his belt before departing to a sustained ovation from the 6,692-strong travelling fans. There was a warm handshake from his manager and a pat on the chest.

“Naby looked good in moments, really good, but he has to adapt to the position again,” Klopp told The Athletic.

“You saw it with Ox (Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain), too. That’s how it is when you’ve been out for a while.

“In moments, you saw what an incredible player Naby is and how important he will be for us but we don’t need to rush it. We can use Naby again now and that’s good for us.”

It was a night when Keita’s comeback was overshadowed by the impressive contribution of the club’s gifted teenagers.

Having fielded effectively a second-string side against League One outfit MK Dons, Klopp’s faith in youth was rewarded as Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Ki-Jana Hoever and Caoimhin Kelleher all excelled.

Jones deservedly walked away clutching the man-of-the-match award after the Liverpool-born attacker showcased the dazzling progress that recently led to the club rewarding him with a new five-year contract.

Elliott, who at the age of 16 years and 174 days, became the youngest player ever to start a first-team game for Liverpool, underlined why the Anfield hierarchy were so delighted to beat off competition from across Europe to sign him from Fulham this summer.

Twice, the fearless England youth international rattled the underside of the bar as well as providing a succession of quality deliveries into the box.

Dutch starlet Hoever, whose debut had arrived eight months earlier in an FA Cup tie at Wolves, became the second-youngest player ever to score for Liverpool when he emphatically headed home James Milner’s cross. His goal was the second of the night after Milner’s first-half opener and was enough to set up a last-16 tie at home to Arsenal.

Young Irish keeper Kelleher will cherish the memories of his senior bow with the highlight a fine save from Jordan Bowery late on.

Keita’s impact was less eye-catching. Operating alongside Oxlade-Chamberlain with Adam Lallana in the holding role, there were predictable signs of rust.

One trademark surging run early on ended with Keita overhitting a pass for Milner outside him.

As the game wore on, he settled and linked up smartly with Jones down the left, while a rare sight of goal ended with Keita slicing high and wide from just outside the box.

In the second half, his influence on the game dwindled before he was replaced by Pedro Chirivella.

The rested Georginio Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho can sleep easy between now and the weekend. That trio appear certain to return to the Liverpool midfield for Saturday’s Premier League showdown at Sheffield United.

But Klopp and his staff firmly believe that Keita will have more than simply a bit-part role to play this season.

Last term, he was adjusting to life in a new country, a new language and a new style of play. Now he’s more settled and knows exactly what his manager demands from him.

He’s living in a house next door to Klopp in Formby, some 12 miles north of Anfield. Andy Robertson lives on the same road and on occasion shares lifts with Keita to training.

Keita’s English has improved significantly and that has enabled him to communicate better with his team-mates. His closest friend in the squad is Sadio Mane, who lives around the corner and has gone out of his way to help smooth the transition from Leipzig to Merseyside.

Quiet and respectful, Keita has never forgotten his roots. When he gets the opportunity to return home to West Africa, he goes armed with football boots to give away to the children who play on the streets of the Guinean capital.

For all Klopp’s midfield options, there’s a sense that Keita offers something different. When he’s playing with a swagger, he’s dynamic and creative. He has the ability to break lines and really hurt teams. He’s got the X-Factor but Kopites want to see it on display more regularly.

In April, he scored Liverpool’s fastest goal in the Premier League era when he netted just 15 seconds into the rout of Huddersfield Town. His pressing forced a mistake high up the field and he then coolly tucked away Mohamed Salah’s pass.

At that stage, he had scored three times in the space of five games and confidence was high.

Getting picked to start away to Barcelona, having previously been overlooked for trips to Manchester City and Manchester United, was a sign that he was finally earning his manager’s trust for the biggest of tests.

But injuries then derailed his progress. Having missed the Champions League final, he certainly wasn’t helped by Guinea putting him under pressure to return ahead of schedule to lead the charge for them in the Africa Cup of Nations. Unsurprisingly, he broke down again and missed a large chunk of pre-season as a result.

He came off the bench to make a cameo in the Community Shield against Manchester City but then aggravated a hip problem on the eve of the Super Cup in Istanbul six weeks ago.

Now, he’s fit and looking to make up for lost time. The potential is clearly there for Keita to kick on and become a mainstay of the side.

If Klopp can unlock it, then Liverpool’s pursuit of glory will have an extra dimension.

Speaking on regards to Grujic’s future at Liverpool, James Pearce says: "Klopp rates Grujic highly. He has a genuine chance of being part of the LFC squad for the 2020/21 season." [@TheAthletic]

Klopp on Elliott and Jones playing in PL: They are ready for that but we need to learn the right moment. We are not in doubt with these boys, we know exactly what we want to do with them and what we expect from them. They have all the time in the world.
Klopp: They need to be patient. But when you let them off the leash, they are ready for some really nice football things. We aren't preparing them for one PL game, but a PL career. Still steps to go but some really nice signs on Wednesday.
