SHUJAAT KHAN, son and pupil of the famous Ustad Vilayat Khan, probably one of the greatest sitarists of all time, deceased in 2004, revealed his special qualities when still a child (his first public performances were when he was six), quickly becoming a specialist of the singing style called gayaki ang.. From that moment his name has appeared on the programmes of every major festival of his country and after that his art began to be appreciated all around the world, and in particular in the United States.

MAMADOU DIABATE was born in Kita, Mali, one of the major centres of the Mande culture and comes from a family of griots (or jeli) the singers who trasmitted and kept alive the oral patrimony of wisdom and knowledge of the community. Still a teenager, Mamadou performed at regional ceremonies, becoming quickly a celebrity. His kinship with the great kora player Toumani Diabate allowed him to become involved in the international music business, where he is now building an already significant career..

LALGUDI GJR KRISHNAN as well belongs to a family with an ancient musical tradition (his father is the famous violinist Lalgudi G Jayaraman).

Bukky Leo began his career in great company, playing with Fela Kuti and Tony Allen; Afro-beat boasts no bigger names. From there he moved into acid jazz, back when people cared about that style, but now he's returned to the style that nurtured him with plenty of modern ideas, bringing in plenty of loops and electronica. In a field where the groove is the key, all the technology could quickly excise the soul of the music, but full marks to Leo, he keeps his sounds fresh and real. The rhythms roar, and his singing becomes a linchpin for everything else. In fact, even with all the additions, this music bears a closer relationship to old U.S. soul than anything now being called R&B. There's plenty to listen to here, and for such a studio concoction, there's a great deal of warmth in it, with grooves that establish and don't quit. Proof -- if you still needed it -- that Afro-beat can be reinvented.

Plants hide their roots (koreshki) to protect them from bad weather while their leaves (vershki) are directly affected by the constant changes in the weather. These two vital parts develop simultaneouly but in opposite direction thus maintaining the balance of the overall organism.
The group Vershki da Koreshki grew in the same way: the roots are formed by two descendants of ancient cultures of Africa (Senegal) and Central Asia (Tuva). The leaves are two compatriots from Saint Petersburg who are nourished by jazz, classical and contemporary music and improvisation.
The synthesis of these seemingly contradictory elements results in the band's great freedom of style and concept.

Гитаристы Серхио Лара и Джо Рейес познакомились в конце 80х годов в техасском города Сан-Антонио. Мексиканец Лара играл на гитаре с девяти лет, уроженец южного Техаса Рейес - с семи. Оба в юности играли в разных рок-, джаз- и блюзовых коллективах, а после знакомства решили выступать вместе, как LARA y REYES. Дуэт дебютировал в 1992 году, записав альбом «Two Guitars, One Passion», распространявшийся лишь на концертах да в нескольких музыкальных магазинах Сан-Антонио. Диск содержал как оригинальные композиции Лара и Рейса, так и произведения других авторов («Spain» Чика Кориа, отрывок из «Carmen» Жоржа Бизе, классическая мариячи-тема «La Bikina»), помимо Лара и Рейеса над ним работал третий участник – испанский фламенко-гитарист Хосе Перейо. С 1995 года LARA y REYES записываются для Higher Octave Music. Первым релизом стал «Guitarras Hermanas», над которым работали перкуссионист Эрик Касийяс и басист Грэг Норрис. Три года спустя вышли альбомы «Exotico», на котором помимо гитар можно услышать скрипку, саксофон, флейту, клавишные инструменты, и «Riverwalk». В 2000 году были изданы тоже две пластинки- «Navidad» - интерпретация 18-ти рождественских стандартов и «World Jazz».

Luis Delgado's Tánger is a live concert recording by his Arab-Andalusian consort in the ancient synagogue Ets Haim. New compositions as well as extracts of Delgado's former works, using acoustic instruments, create an intense and beautiful work. The participating musicians are: Luis Delgado (santur, Andalusian oud), El Arabi Serghini Mohammed (voice, viola), Jaime Muñoz (kaval, bamboo-flutes, clarinet), Akrin Larbi (oriental oud), Jamal Ben Allal (violin), David Mayoral (darbucas and other percussions), and Cuco Pérez (accordion).
