The Saudi-led coalition fighting rebels in Yemen says Saudi air defense units have intercepted a rocket fired from inside Yemen towards southwest Saudi (Jazan Province). A statement by the coalition said the rocket, which was fired early this morning, did not cause injuries or material damage and that the Saudi Air Force reacted immediately and destroyed the launching pad inside Yemen.

Saudi Arabia’s state media have reported that the country’s military had intercepted a Scud long-range ballistic missile, fired from neighboring Yemen by the Houthi movement and its allies. The missile was reportedly targeting the southern city of Najran.

Several such attacks have been reported in recent weeks. Saudi missile defence systems have successfully intercepted these missile attacks.

The immediate border area of Jazan province has experienced regular low-level violence. Mountainous terrain along the border complicates Saudi forces’ ability to stop these attacks, including small-scale assaults against border observation posts, though it remains unlikely that the Houthis have the capability to launch broader incursions.

Peace talks between the Houthis and the government of President Hadi are set to resume on 14 Jan. This may see an increase in hostile activity in border regions.

“They have less than five years to lose all their foreign currency reserves because of their major financial deficits, cost of military campaign in Yemen and their support to Syrian rebels,” said Luay Al-Khatteeb, a nonresident fellow at the Brookings Doha Center in Qatar, who specializes in the political economy of the Persian Gulf countries. “Saudi Arabia must act fast and smart by starting to gradually cut down on their subsidies, reduce superfluous spending on defense and privatize selected state-owned entities to generate cash,” he said.

Regularna vojska Sauda (kao i policija) je vec decenijama nacin rjesavanja socijalnih problema, odnosno zaposljavanja ogromnog broja populacije izmedju 18 i 24 godine. Ljudi koji se nisu snasli nigdje drugo, su stalni posao pronalazili u vojsci. Zato im je vojska tako smijesna i neefektivna.
Ovo istina nije slucaj samo sa Saudijom, skoro identicna je situacija sa ostalim drzavama GCC-a.

Ukidanjem subvencija, odnosno trosenja na vojsku, Saudija rizikuje ozbiljne socijalne nemire koje si ne moze priustiti u ovom trenutku, dok ratuje protiv koalicije Hutija i Salehovih lojalista.
Jedino relativno dugotrajan mir omogucuje Saudima da se izvuku iz problema koji se samo nagomilavaju.

Prilicno star tekst, ali se vrijedi malo osvrnuti nazad.

Saudi Arabia has jumped into the abyss.

Its air attacks on Yemen are a historic and potentially fatal blow to the Kingdom and to the Middle East.

Who decided that this extraordinary battle should take shape in the poorest of Arab nations? The Saudis, whose King is widely rumoured in the Arab world to be incapable of taking decisions of state? Or the princes within the Saudi army who fear that their own security forces may not be loyal to the monarchy?

The “story” of Yemen appears simple. Houthi rebels, who are Shia Muslims, have captured the capital of Sanaa with the help – so say the Saudis – of the Iranians. The legitimate President – Abed Rabou Mansour Hadi – has fled to the Saudi capital of Riyadh from his bolthole in the old southern Yemeni capital of Aden. The Saudis will not permit an Iranian proxy state to be set up on their border – always forgetting that they already have an Iranian-proxy state called Iraq on their northern border, courtesy of the 2003 Anglo-American invasion of Iraq. The real “story” is more important. Perhaps half of the Saudi army is of Yemeni tribal origin. Saudi soldiers are intimately – through their own families – involved in Yemen, and the Yemen revolution is a stab in the guts of the Saudi royal family. No wonder King Salman of Saudi Arabia – if he indeed rules his nation – wishes to bring this crisis to an end. But are his bombing raids on Sanaa going to crush a Shia Muslim rebellion?

... What provoked the Saudis into their extraordinary adventure in Yemen was not the approach of Houthis towards Aden but the approach of US-Iranian agreement at Lausanne.

History may say that the attacks on Yemen are the start of a great civil war between Sunnis and Shia in the Middle East. This would satisfy the West – and Israel – in a belief that the Arabs are at war with themselves. But it may also be true that this is the last attempt by the Saudis to prove that they are a major military power. In 1990, faced with the arrival of Saddam’s legions in Kuwait, they asked infidel America to protect them (to the fury of Osama bin Laden). ...

More seriously, will it resolve the coming struggle within the royal family, whose princes do not all believe Yemen must be the cornerstone of Saudi power – nor that Wahabism must be the permanent sectional belief. And who gains from the new Yemen crisis? The oil producers, of course. And that means Saudi Arabia – and Iran.

Koliko znam ima pregradu izmedju municije i posade i ako je pogodjena obicno posada prezivi jer snaga eksplozije ode ugore kroz blow-up panele, ali mozda je kod ovog (prvog) tenka pregrada bila otvorena u momentu pogotka (ako su punili top bas tada) i sve ode u p.m.
