Loudovikos ton Anogeion with his gentle voice, the compelling lyricism of his songs and his emotionally sensitive arrangments have enchanted Greek audiences for years. His midnight concerts in historic settings have cult status, and his CDs habitually top the Greek charts, staying there for weeks. His lyrics are inspired by his profound knowledge of the way of life, the feelings and the klix of the people who live here. In the foreword to this edition, Loudovikos wrote: "Up here on the barren slopes of Mount Psiloritis, people listen to the spirit of the stones. We sing of unrequited love and the paths it takes. And we still sing of death in a deeply erotic way. The people of the mountains are closer to the heavens."

The album 'BAHAR' (LM020) by Makis Ablianitis was released in December 2000 and it immediately became a great success. Ablianitis was invited at the 'Ethnic & Jazz Festival' ( Athens ) in the spring of 2001 to perform 'BAHAR'. And therefore, the opportunity for Ablianitis' group to be formed was presented. 'BAHAR' crossed the borders and became known worldwide. The French company 'George V Records' included the piece "Love Secret" in the collection of "BUDDHA BAR" for the 40 th anniversary of Amnesty International. Three more record companies ( Stereo Deluxe, Kriztal, 4 Fun Music) have asked for pieces from 'BAHAR' to be included in their collections. Ablianitis' group appeared in Constantinople in the spring of 2002 and in the summer of the same year it participated in the festival of Ohride and a month later at the "New Age & World Music Festival" at Skopje . The following spring the group performed for the second time for the audience of Constantinople that had supported "BAHAR" so fanatically.
After all these live performances there was a new inspiration in the music of "BAHAR". The direct communication with the audience, the chemistry among the members of the group but also the musicians' improvisational mood has created a new, completely different and very interesting version of 'BAHAR'. Yet, it's not just about the already known pieces. Ablianitis has written new pieces especially for his concerts, and has rearranged the pieces of other musicians (Imaginary Traveller/ Brian Keane). Therefore, the material of the live recordings of 'BAHAR' is now completely different from that of the original record.

http://rapidshare.com/files/152596130/MakisAblianitis-Kismet.rarSeven years after the golden CD BAHAR (LM020), and three years after BAHAR LIVE, under the sky (LM035), Makis Ablianitis releases his new album. KISMET, the fate that controls our lives or the fate that we make (?): a title that was not accidentally used, as Ablianitis writes at his dedication to his father.
This time Makis Ablianitis is travelling to internal landscapes: to the past, the memories, the emotions. And as we travel from track to track our emotions change from melancholic to optimistic, from down-tempo to up-tempo.
Biography from official website:
Makis Ablianitis is an inspired composer and one of the most important guitar players in Greece. His relationship with music began at the age of 15 when he got his first guitar. He studied theory by attending seminary courses of Theodoros Antoniou and at the Center of Contemporary Musical Research. Following this, he studied higher theory by graduating from the classes of Fugas and Orchestration with excellent. He concluded his studies at the Berklee Music College of Boston with a scholarship. The period of his studies at Berklee was decisive for his later course as a musician, because at the same time of his studies, he had the ability to play with renowned musicians of the Boston jazz scene.
In 1993 he formed the quartet ‘Jazz Steps’ and in 1995 the group ‘Jazz Crew’. During the period of 1996 - 1998 he was a member of the ethnic group of Michalis Nikoloudis and Omar Faruk Tekbilek, performing at the concerts they gave in Greece and abroad.
His debut took place in 1997 with the album ‘FLAME KEEPER’ (THESIS / 1997). An integral part for his carrier also was his collaboration with the ‘ARTS, DANCE & MUSIC PRODUCTIONS’, in November 1999. It involved the very successful BROADWAY shows in Athens.
At his second album 'BAHAR' (LIBRA MUSIC / 2000), Ablianitis met the world famous Indian flute player, Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, and one of the best Greek singers, Manolis Lidakis. Not only 'BAHAR' is a very interesting project, but also it was hit at once. Ablianitis formed his own group and toured Greece, FYROM and Turkey. His music became famous, and many labels ask for license to include tracks of BAHAR in their collections. On January 2004 was released MOSAIC (LIBRA MUSIC), the album of the famous Greek singer Maria Farantouri (featuring: Glen Velez, Fuat Saka, Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, Ross Daly). Ablianitis has given 3 songs to Farantouri and made all the arrangements of the album.
In the spring of 2004 he formed the group “HOT ORGANIC TRIO”. The trio plays original songs and jazz standards, with the distinctive sound, that only the trio: guitar- hammond organ- drums, can create.
On December 2004, released the album ‘BAHAR Live under the sky’, with songs from the ‘BAHAR’ cd, and new songs that recorded live.
The listener who has already listened to ‘BAHAR’ will feel here the value of live, since the communication with the audience, but also among the musicians is determinative and it is that, which gives to the musician the impulse to ‘take off’. The melodic lines are changing, following the vividness of the moment and in their turn they influence and are influenced by the audience’s reaction.
Makis Ablianitis has numerous participations on festivals and concerts all over the world, while he is also involved with the tuition of jazz music by teaching guitar, modern harmony and orchestration at various Conservatories in AthensAt this time period Makis Ablianitis released his new cd ‘KISMET’, featuring among others: Manolis Lidakis, Hariprasad Chaurasia, Fuat Saka, Dragan Dautovski, and Giorgos Maglaras.

Ivo Papasov - Dance Of The Falcon
http://rapidshare.com/files/153218962/IvoPapasov-DanceOfTheFalcon.rarSome Papasov fans might be slightly disappointed at the absence of vocals from Ivo’s mercurial wife, Maria Karafizieva, but there’s a real focus to these blistering, Balkan-flavoured tunes. Papasov’s playing is sometimes broiling and spicy, sometimes considered (almost ethereal) in its reflection, but it’s always at the centre of arrangements that illustrate the power of putting together a sterling set of support musicians and enveloping them in a big, spacious production sound.
Highlights include the rip-roaring opening track, and on this and the more melodic ‘Tinner’s Dance’, Ivo’s dazzling virtuoso runs are underpinned by percussion that crackles with energy. ‘Sunrise’ is moodier, almost menacing in tone and positively begs for inclusion on an arty East European cinema verité soundtrack.
Speaking of films, there’s a nice oriental nod in the direction of Henry Mancini on ‘Pink Panther’, the smooth tone invigorated by Papasov’s innate tendency to stray adventurously into wild and soaring improvisational runs.
Technically brilliant but with a fresh, energetic approach, the only real drawback to Dance of the Falcon is that some of the jazz tinges (especially the guitar and keyboard flourishes) seem superfluous, and in fact at times they’re buried almost apologetically in the mix. There is also a danger that the sheer breathless virtuosity will become overwhelming for some — don’t expect to be humming too many catchy melodies after hearing this album. But with Paposov’s wild gypsy past rushing like an invigorating whirlwind through this recording, Dance of the Falcon is one of the most thrilling — if challenging — releases of the summer.

"Makes brass sound cool and sassy again" - The Daily Telegraph
"Turning the songs of Snoop Dogg and Marvin Gaye into New Orleans masterpieces" - Word Magazine
After wooing fans with the raucous charm of their debut album ‘Rock With The Hot 8' (featuring that "Sexual Healing" cover) and the raw party energy of their live shows, Hot 8 Brass Band are back in town.
It's been a busy old year - they completed a sell-out UK and European tour in February, appearing on The Culture Show (BBC 2); laying down a couple of tracks for the new Basement Jaxx album; and recording live sessions for BBC Radio 1 and BBC 6Music while they were over here.
Hot 8 will be touring the UK between 29th July - 10th August, including a high profile spot at The Big Chill festival (2nd August); gigs including Brighton (30th July) and London (31st) and a host of other festivals. They have also had requests to play on major UK chat shows and in the BBC's Electric Proms so you may be seeing them from the comfort of your living room soon.
Available as a digital download-only release to coincide with their forthcoming UK tour, this remixes album kicks off with the seriously funky, hi-energy Lack Of Afro Remix of "It's Real", with wayward wah wah guitars and heavy hitting drums; ditching the vocal for a full on instrumental jam.
Tru Thoughts label-mate Natural Self applies his innately classy beat-making and production skills to "We Are One", laying a stripped back, bassy reggae-style groove under the lush, multi-layered horns. Those who are familiar with Natural Self's latest album ‘The Art Of Vibration' - which came out in June to great reactions and radio play from Mark Lamarr (Radio 2) and Gilles Peterson (Radio 1) - will know that a strident, funky horn section is a prominent feature in his own compositions.
Hint's rework of "Jisten To Me" has got his light yet energetic touch running right through it, transforming the flowing big brass number into a cheeky dancefloor track, isolating a single horn hook and fashioning a catchy break. All the tricks and quirky electronic touches that have made Hint's own tracks, such as "At The Dance" and "The Tremmuh" such massive DJ weapons in recent years, are out in force. Hint's hotly-anticipated new album ‘Driven From Distraction' is out on 28th July.
The famously wonderful Hot 8 Brass Band cover of "Sexual Healing" features here too, edited to a slightly more manageable five minutes by Me&You - aka Tru Thoughts' TM Juke and Robert Luis.
Unforscene seamlessly weave their trademark atmospheric textures through "Mish Mash" and give "Get Up" an eerie, ominous edge, cranking up the marching beat and the tension levels to eleven. Diesler takes the chunky jazzy hip hop of "Get Up" and gives it a dusting down for the dancefloor, while "It's Real" comes out of Palov & Mishkin's studio with a cheeky cut'n'paste hip hop vibe, scratching and a big ol' beat. One of the most out-there remixes on this collection is Aldo Vanucci's makeover of "What's My Name", with an insistent hook and a dancehall-style vocal taking it to another sphere.
---------------------------------------------------
The members of the Hot 8 were all born and raised in New Orleans; many of them began playing together in high school. In 1995 they came together and began playing traditional New Orleans brass band music professionally.
Founded by Bennie Pete, Jerome Jones, and Harry Cook in 1995, the band has played in traditional Second Line parades hosted each Sunday by a Social Aid and Pleasure Club ever since. The Hot 8 are famous for playing all day in the sun, then hopping to a club gig and playing through the night. But even more than their boundless energy, what makes the Hot 8 special are the sounds they coax from their well-loved, well-worn horns.
The Hot 8 Brass Band has toured in Japan, Italy, France, Spain, Finland, England, and Sardinia. They play regularly at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival ("Jazz Fest") and have played in the Village Halloween Parade in New York City, the Putumayo World Musics Concert of Thanksgiving in New Orleans, the Mardi Gras day Zulu parade, San Antonio Zulu Association Festival, the City of New Orleans New Year's Celebration and Mo' Fest, the Tom Joyner Morning Show, and the Master P music video Hootie Hoo.
Following Hurricane Katrina and the devastation wrought upon New Orleans, The Hot 8 became the featured band in the SAVE OUR BRASS! relief project, which brought music to evacuee shelters, temporary trailer parks, and communities that have reached out to New Orleanians. As a result, the Hot 8 Brass Band have been featured on CNN, Nightline, WDSU-TV (New Orleans) and in the New York Times.

http://rapidshare.com/files/154584317/BuenaVistaSocialClub-LiveAtCarnegieHall-2008.rar'With the bittersweet delicacy of a classic bolero,' said The New York Times in a review of the concert, 'the Buena Vista Social Club simultaneously celebrated the vitality and virtuosity of its musicians and mourned the era they embody.' The cultural significance of BVSC's performance was matched by its political momentousness; this concert offered a rare opportunity for these master Cuban musicians, coming together for the first time as a single ensemble, to freely play their classic songs for an American audience. This two-CD set preserves an important, but sadly evanescent, moment when borders and bureaucracies miraculously disappeared in the name of art. As singer Portuondo, who would subsequently embark on her own successful American tour, recalled, 'I felt triumphant seeing how we all worked together as a group, seeing how the music reached the audience...We felt so elated to be able to share our music. All of us had known each other for many years and played together many times, but it was a unique and unrepeatable occasion that our culture and our roots could reach the public through such a beautiful concert with all of us there together on the stage.'
To build awareness and anticipation for the live set, Nonesuch released a digital single of 'Chan Chan,' the concert's opening number and arguably the
BVSC's signature song, on July 1, the 10th anniversary of the concert date. The two-disc package also includes candid, often quite moving, first-person reminiscences from many of the surviving participants about the days-and hours-leading up to the concert and the once-in-a-lifetime experience of the evening itself. As album producer and fellow performer Cooder puts it, 'Listening to the tapes of the concert for the first time in ten years, I'm struck by what an amazing musical event it was. You'll never hear it again, people of this caliber working together. They were dramatic personalities and they're nearly all gone. There's nobody left like that anymore.'

The long expected studio album of Huun-Huur-Tu was created in cooperation with famous singer Sainkho from Tuva. The aim was to produce an album based on ballads, with sounds of silence and nature, closed to the great enviroment of central Asia. The listener should dive into the nature and take time for "Mother-Earth! Father-Sky!" The music infers itself to the listener at the moment he/she takes time to relax.
What surprises and delights people who visit Tuva for the first time is that vast expanse of pristine nature.
The tenderness of springs, the wildness of rivers, the calmness of lakes, framed by severe, age-old mountains.
And in Tuva, people are amazed by the immense sky, always blue in the daytime, and infinitely starry at night. And what else? Tuvan melodies.
They have probably been sounding out for a thousand years between the great sky and the pristine earth.
And this calls to mind the words of Sotpaa Sat, the greatest story-teller of Tuva: "Mother-Earth! Father-Sky!"
"In this world, all plants and human beings have their father and mother; that is how the deity created it. Man's father is the sky, they say. From the very beginning, the sky was man's father, so people say."
"Once upon a time, when the flat thing used to float by like the wind, and the round thing used to roll by like a ball, three storms raged in this world. First the fire storm blazed and covered the world with flames. Then the water storm brought a flood and triumphed over the fire storm, putting the fire out, so they say.
Finally the tempest began and razed the high mountain of Sumber-Uula to the ground. The Earth speck emerged from the Sumber-Uula Taiga, which the tempest had destroyed, and crushed the water spout and dried the flood.
People say the tempest created this world. In the place of the tempest, rivers, mountains, valleys, seas and mankind appeared. So they say. Since that time, Father Sky and Mother Earth have coexisted and cannot live without each other. If the fire of the white sky goes and heaven vanishes, then all the living things and beings on Earth will perish..."
"Mother-Earth, I beg you to grant me happiness. Mother Earth, I beg you to grant me luck. Mother-Earth, I beg you to protect and care for my children. Mother-Earth, I beg you to protect my home and origins."
--------------------------------------------------------------
The American producer and critic Ted Levin writes:
"It was shortly after the ensemble HUUN-HUUR-TU left Los Angeles to return to Tuva on the heels of a recording session for the sound track (by Ry Cooder) of a new Hollywood film about Geronimo, the chief of the Apaches, that I sat down to write these notes and realized that I'd forgotten to ask the members of HUUN-HUUR-TU a crucial question: what does HUUN-HUUR-TU mean in Tuvan, and why did they choose it as their monike? I picked up the phone and dialed Kyzyl, the capital of Tuva. In a few seconds, I was speaking with Alexander Bapa, the percussion player in HUUN-HUUR-TU (whose instrumentarium includes a conch shell, an enormous goat-skin shamanic drum, and a rattle made from the ankle bones of a sheep enclosed in a bull testicle. 'HUUN-HUUR-TU' means the vertical separation of light rays that you often see out on the grasslands just after sunrise or just before sunset.
Officially prohibited to foreigners, Tuva had achieved legendary status among a small group of devotees fascinated by the phenomenon of throat-singing, in which a single vocalist produces two or even three notes simultaneously by selectively amplifying harmonics naturally present in the voice. For these devotees, part of the allure of Tuvan throat-singing has undoubtedly been the mystery of Tuva itself. Ringed by mountains, desert, and thick taiga forest where descendants of the aboriginal Siberian forest people still herd reindeer. Tuva seems to be on the way to nowhere.
During the last few years, the political and cultural barriers that isolated Tuva for so long have begun to crumble. Much has changed there since my visit in 1987, when xenophobic officials gave the order to give a whole town a fresh coat of paint before the arrival of our expedition. Additionally all amateur musicians were released from work for one week to be able to prepare the songs that we wanted record. Tuva has welcomed foreigners interested in its culture and nature. Today Tuvans have begun to travel widely to present their remarkable musical art to a steadily increasing, diverse public. The ensemble HUUN-HUUR-TU is a product of Tuva's increasing worldliness."
In 1992 HUUN - HUUR - TU was founded by Sasha Bapa, his brother, Sayan, and two other musicians, Kaigal-ool Khovalyg and Albert Kuvezin. Ever since they have tried to focus on the performance of "old and forgotten songs", as Sasha put it. Sasha, Sayan, and Kaigal-ool were refugees of one of the large state-managed song and dance ensembles that became fixed institutions of the public cultural life during the Soviet era. For decades these ensembles with their glitzy performances of folk music or pseudo folk music offered the only possibility for young musicians to play indigenous music for a living. But throughout the privatization of the music business in the former Soviet Union, many musicians decided to abandon these state ensembles and formed their own groups. The musical results have decidedly been mixed.
The members of HUUN-HUUR-TU have devoted themselves to learning oId songs and tunes but at the same time their performances reflect the values of innovation as much as tradition. For example, the very notion of an ensemble like HUUN-HUUR-TU is new to Tuva: Most Tuvan music has traditionally been performed by a solo singer or instrumentalist, and musicians have tended to specialize in a particular genre or musical style. These genres and styles in turn have deep roots in particular kinds of social occasions. By contrast, HUUN-HUUR-TU's eclectic concert presentations of old songs and tunes fall between the cracks of Tuvan musical life. "In Tuva, there's still no real context for what we do," says Sasha Bapa. "We perform there only rarely because it's so difficult for an independent group like ours: where can we find a good hall and sound equipment, and transportation to get there? How can we deal with all the government and commercial structures that still control a lot of the booking? And who can offer fees that will support us even modestly as professional musicians? Kaigal-ool Khovalyg, the musical leader of our group, might be better known in America than in Tuva. We're trying to preserve our musical heritage, but at the same time, we're trying to look forward. If a musical tradition stops evolving, it is destined to die."
TUVA
This is the name of a remote region, far away from the familiar route of civilization in the center of Asia. The autonomous republic of Tuva, ringed by mountains and deserts (population 300.000) is part of the new formation of countries lead by Russia. It shares its Southern border with Mongolia, the capital is Kyzyl by the river Yennisey.
Tuvan explanations:
Khöömei: The name for overtone and throat singing
Sygyt (Tuvan: "whistle"): High overtone singing, sounding like a flute
Igil: Two-stringed fiddle with a carved wooden horses's head attached to the top of the neck, modern versions with three strings, played vertically, while sitting on the ground or on a chair
Doshpuluur - Two or three string banjo-like plucked instrument
Khomus - Mouth harp
Dungur - Large flat shaman drum or tambourine
Chanzy - Three string bowed instrument
