A frequently cited statistic is this one:
30% of people killed by cops are black people. Black people only make up 13% of the population. That paints a very bad, very racist picture. This is the picture that Social Justice Warriors and Black Lives Matter activists frequently bring up.
But there are other numbers that they NEVER mention and actively suppress:
In the 75 largest counties in America, blacks constitute:
- 62% of all robberies
- 57% of all murders
- 45% of all assaults
Despite the fact that they only comprise 15% of the population!!!
That is quite... DISPROPORTIONATE... wouldn't you say?
Further, it is not racist to point out FACTS!
Now that changes the picture entirely doesn't it?
It's not surprising at all that the group that is most frequently at the business end of a cop's gun is the group most frequently provoking law enforcement contact.
Now you can argue about why there is so much criminal activity, you can make the case that there are a lot of social and historical forces at work, that ARE racist, that have created this climate.
You can argue that cops harass and detain blacks without justification. You'd have to make your case. But you could argue that.
You can also CERTAINLY argue that individual cases show criminal conduct by the police.
But one thing you CAN'T do then is to:
1. say that black men are disproportionately being killed by police (when they are disproportionately engaged in violent crime)
2. such killing is a clear indication of racism by the police.
I'm not even a fan of the police. I think there are problems with a group of people who more or less have to go around asserting their AUTHORITAAAAAY.
But it is not only wrong, but DANGEROUS to accuse them of racism based on disingenuous figures that paint a FALSE picture.
If you are arguing that the institution of policing is racist, prove it with good numbers. Prove it with correct facts. If the truth is on your side, you should have no trouble doing it.
If you need to resort to lies and red herrings, you undermine your own movement.
