This CD was recorded at LOHO Studios on Clinton Street on Manhattan's Lower East Side a few weeks after the Hungry March Band returned from its first European tour. In a similar style to On the Waterfront, the entire thing was recorded live, but this time with many well-placed microphones, and in a more controlled sound environment. It was produced by Jason Candler and the Hungry March Band, recorded by Joe Hogan, and contains cover art by Troy Frantz.

Roaring out of Brooklyn NYC, the Hungry March Band is the greatest brass march band of all time. The HMB is based in New York City. We are a community group with a membership as diverse as our music. Put on your dancing shoes and break out the fancy threads because we’ve got the party going on - a blazing parade of flesh, blood, steel, brass and wood. We are the music of the people!

Our musical repertoire consists of original compositions written by band members as well as scores selected from our multi-cultural world community. These songs range from New Orleans street bands, European brass traditions, Gypsy/Roma classics, wedding brass bands from India, the jazz world and the global community of NYC. The band is an ever evolving musical experiment influenced and inspired from Brooklyn’s backyard with Latin flavor, punk rock noise, hip hop beats and music of the streets.

Our discography includes three self-produced CD’s. The most recent, “Critical Brass” was recorded at Loho Studios, NYC, in the Spring of 2004 merely days after returning from a very successful European tour. Our second release “On the Waterfront” (2003) was recorded in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and dedicated to the hallowed grounds upon which the tunes were wrought. The virgin debut, Hungry March Band Official Bootleg, (2001) consists of a series of live recordings and is considered an historical reference for exercises in wind, percussion and fluid dynamics.

We have been featured in articles in the New York Times, The Village Voice, London Times, New York Post, Time Out New York, New York Press, Tokyo Times, various European publications and have countless mentions in blogs, various zines and web articles. We have appeared on several TV networks including Lifetime, CNN, and New York One, march bys on the fly with ABC, NBC, CBS as well as appearances in several documentaries including an HMB feature Rockumentary, A Cat in a Bag.

We have performed in a huge variety of fine venues and celebrated events. The band is infamous for playing shows that are somewhere between legendary and magical. Such planned and spontaneous performances have included guerilla art events, the Staten Island Ferry, NYC subways, Brighton Beach Boardwalks and steps of the NYC Post Office. We are available to play festivals, parties, parades, community celebrations, conventions, birthdays, weddings, bar mitzvahs…and remain open to suggestion!

HMB Pleasure Society and Second Line is an evolving extension of the band that adds so much spice to our parades and events, that includes a dedicated group, its participation in parade presentations features up to 75 performers who reflect the music with their vibrant dancing, baton twirling, fire spinning, hoola-hooping, gymnastics, stilt walking, and puppeteering.

Thanks to the Buena Vista Social Club, Omara Portuondo requires no introduction to British audiences. But Maria who? The sister of that Brazilian genius Caetano Veloso rarely ventures this side of the water. All the more reason to savour this meeting between the two great Latin traditions. The emphasis is on more ruminative material that does full justice to the darker tones of the singers’ voices. While it’s frustrating that the pianist, Roberto Fonseca, does not break loose all that often — the Havana dance pulse of Tal Vez being a rare exception — this remains a magisterial set, Portuondo sounding more majestic than ever as she approaches her 80th birthday. Her seemingly improvised opening performance on Lacho is simply gorgeous. No English translations of the lyrics, alas, but there’s an accompanying documentary DVD.

MARIA BETHANIA - a portrait:

Born in Santo Amaro da Purificação, a small town in the countryside of Bahia (Northeast Brazil), Bethânia used to sing along with other family members and dreamt of becoming an actress. In 1960, she moved to Salvador to finish her formal studies, and joined the local artistic milieu with her brother Caetano Veloso. Three years later, she made her debut as a singer in the play "Boca de Ouro", by Nelson Rodrigues.

In that period, Bethânia e Caetano met other musicians who were also starting their music careers: Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Tom Zé, Alcivando Luz and others. And in 1964, this group of artists put on the shows "Nós Por Exemplo", "Nova Bossa Velha, Velha Bossa Nova" and "Mora na Filosofia". On that occasion, Bethânia was heard by the bossa nova muse, Nara Leão, who invited Bethânia to replace her in the show "Opinião", which was on in Rio de Janeiro. In 1965, during the Military Dictatorship in Brazil, Bethânia and Caetano moved to Rio de Janeiro. Bethânia's performance of the song "Carcará" (João do Vale/ José Cândido), in the show "Opinião", became a huge success and she got famous as a protest singer.

In that same year, Bethânia made her first recordings - a single and an LP, which included samba tunes by Noel Rosa, Benedito Lacerda, and songs by her brother Caetano Veloso.

In 1966, after a brief stay in her native Bahia, Bethânia participated in two shows - "Arena Canta Bahia" and "Tempo de Guerra", both directed by Augusto Boal. She also sang in music festivals, theaters and nightclubs in Rio and São Paulo, becoming known all over Brazil. Possessing a discography of more than 30 records, Bethânia has also performed and recorded with Edu Lobo and Chico Buarque. And in 1976, along with Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Gal Costa, she co-founded the group Doces Bárbaros. Her 1978, album "Álibi", sold over a million copies, placing Bethânia on the top of the charts in Brazil. This record included the hits "Negue" (Adelino Moreira/ Enzo Passos), "Explode Coração" (Gonzaguinha), "Ronda" (Paulo Vanzolini), "Sonho Meu" (Dona Ivone Lara/ Délcio Carvalho) and "Cálice" (Gil/ Chico Buarque). In 1986, Bethânia released the LP "Dezembros", featuring the bolero "Anos Dourados", by Tom Jobim and Chico Buarque. In the early 90's, she made more intimate albums, and in 1994 Bethânia re-emerged with a CD of romantic songs by Roberto and Erasmo Carlos ("As Canções que Você Fez pra Mim"). In 1996, Bethânia released the disc "Âmbar", which was turned into the show "Ambar - Imitação da Vida" in the following year, being acclaimed by the audiences and resulting in a double album. In 1999, she released the live, double CD "Diamante Verdadeiro".

On his first Intuition Nubenegra release El Sueño de Al-Zaqqâq, Spanish musician and producer Luis Delgado sets the works of twelfth century Moorish poet Ibn Al-Zaqqâq into music.
Thus an expert of Moorish culture still present in today's Spain through its breathtaking architecture, Delgado mixed the sound of original Arabic instruments such as Ud, Bendir, Nay, Turkish Qanun, Tajira, Darbuka, and many more (mostly part of his own private collection of over two hundred instruments) with ambient sounds created with digital instruments of more contemporary times. The poems are interpreted by the haunting voices of Aurora Moreno and Mohamed El Arabí Serghini; entwined with the wonderful music of Luis Delgado they take us to places in which it seems only pleasant to live: El Sueño de Al-Zaqqâq easily seduces the listener into dreaming along, of a world full of wonder.

After recording with jazz greats, with traditional Arab musicians, with classical string quartets or Armenian musicians, after writing symphonic orchestral works for the BBC Orchestra in London and the Ensemble Modern in Germany – what would a Lebanese composer do next? Of course he would go to Portugal, put music to Portuguese poetry and record the songs with a young fado singer from Lisbon.

The adventure started with an inquiry by Ricardo Pais, the director of the National Theatre in Porto. Rabih Abou-Khalil, who first thought the whole idea was humorous – especially considering that he spoke absolutely no Portuguese at the time – immediately consented; the thrill of doing something that surreal was simply irresistible. It had not been the first time that Abou-Khalil considered working with a singer. However, he had not encountered the right one before – a free spirited virtuosic vocalist, who could sing Abou-Khalil’s complex rhythms and unusual melodies, sufficiently rooted in his own culture to be able to transcend it. These traits have always played a major role in the choice of musicians Abou-Khalil made. And if the lyrics should have to be in Portuguese, so be it, music transcends language…

Abou-Khalil’s discovery is Ricardo Ribeiro, a young singer from Lisbon, who until now has “only” sung fado, Portugal’s national music. Despite his 26 years he has already established a reputation for himself. He sings Abou-Khalil’s compositions as if they were his own, he masters the complicated rhythms and unusual melodic lines with absolute ease. His voice, at times tantalizingly silky, at others rapturously powerful, melts into Abou-Khalil’s oud playing to create a new unity, as though the two sprung from the same source. Ever present is Ricardo’s "saudades", the Portuguese art of sadness and longing.

Abou-Khalil’s long-time companions have more than supporting roles. Luciano Biondini from Spoleto in Italy, the accordion virtuoso, is as discreet as he is present, masterfully accentuating the musical subtleties. Michel Godard from Paris, the French tuba player, who doubles on bass and serpent, has been playing with Abou-Khalil since 17 years. It is always a revelation to hear the tuba played this light-footed, or to hear the almost human voice of the serpent, a renaissance instrument brought back to life by Michel. Jarrod Cagwin, the American drummer from Iowa, is once again part of Abou-Khalil’s recordings. He moved to Europe eight years ago so as to join the band, and has become an expert in Abou-Khalil’s rhythms, making every note swing with an infectious drive.

The result is an “imaginary folklore”, a music that sounds new and strange, yet familiar and natural, as if it had always existed. Far away from any banalities, something new has been born. Perhaps the missing link between East and West, between Classical and Modern, between Folklore and Art Music, deeply rooted in the everywhere and the nowhere.
