Why Veza? And What Does Veza Mean?
When MADCO artistic director, Stacy West, learned there are more Bosnians living in St. Louis than anywhere else outside their native country, she felt strongly that she needed to reach out to that community and see if there was a way to use MADCO and dance to develop a greater sense of cross-cultural understanding. In her search West met a young Bosnian man named Haris Fazlic. The interaction between West and Fazlic became the seed for Veza, which means connection in Bosnian. The concept of connection inspired the whole evening's program.
Dance uses passion, body language, and rhythm to tell stories and connect us to the world. Veza not only features the world premiere of "Still Standing" honoring Bosnians in St. Louis but also four other works that use movement to tell stories, express emotions and move audience members even though they never leave their seats.
Reflections in the Well of Solace" was developed on MADCO by New York choreographer Joseph Mills in response to the American tragedy on 9/11 and the process of healing in the aftermath. Other pieces on the program include "The Carpet" by internationally active choreographer, Michael Foley and "Flashpoint" by Timothy O'Slynne.
When MADCO Artistic Director Stacy West was asked about Veza, she replied, "When I look at the world I see dance and when I look at dance I see the world. Connection, Veza....it's the perfect title! "
