Spare and scratchy, this album is rougher and less even than the later efforts of Miss Marshall. Absolutely amazing is "Rockets" -- still one of her best in it's sweetness and sing-along-ability. "Headlights" is tragic and pained, and more driving (sorry about the pun) than most Cat Power songs. This is a wonderful rainy day album probably better suited to people who are already fans of her music, but absolutely necessary in a CP fan's library. Also: she's backed by Tim Foljahn and Steve Shelley, who add a whole different set of sonic youth-ey influences.

Minus the Bear - They Make Beer Commercials Like This (2004)

This is the third release from Seattle's Minus The Bear, who construct their sound from guitar tapped melodies, textural electronics, an airtight rhythm section, and vivid melodic narratives. "They Make Beer Commercials Like This" shows the evolution of the band's craft and finally captures the spark of their live show.

Although Minus the Bear's uniformly goofy song titles and album names make the Seattle quartet seem at first like the spiritual descendents of local scene godfathers the Young Fresh Fellows - besides the sarcastic album title, the best titles this time out have to be "Hey, Is That a Ninja Up There?" and "I'm Totally Not Down With Rob's Alien" - the funniest thing about them is how straightforward and (relatively) serious their music is. Boasting a slightly rougher sound than the Steve Fisk-produced Highly Refined Pirates, They Make Beer Commercials Like This is nevertheless at least as complex as their previous releases, but with more of an emphasis this time on constantly shifting, tricky rhythms and a more prominent and melodic presence for bassist Cory Murchy to counterpoint David Knudson's typically fluid guitar showcases. This is especially notable on the opening "Fine + 2 Points," which has even more of the chilly but danceable sound of early-'80s post-punk outfits like A Certain Ratio and Crispy Ambulance than the far more celebrated Franz Ferdinand do.

Isolйe - We Are Monster (13/06/2005)

There were rumours, there were whispers but nothing seemed to be forthcoming. People use the term "long awaited new album" far too flippantly but in ISOLÉE's case that term doesn't even begin to do it justice. Five years ago, after a handful of 12'' singles (including the now bona fide classic "BEAU MOT PLAGE"), RAJKO MUELLER released the "REST" album which blew minds around the world.
House music had been stagnant for so long but Rajko found new ways to breathe life into it and made it sound as exciting as the day it was first born in Chicago. He also did something else, he created something entirely new and fresh sounding and made one of the few "dance" albums that stood up to long term listening. To this day it sounds like it came from another world.
In the intervening years there have been a few more singles and several acclaimed remixes along with a few whispers that the next Isolée album would see Mr. Mueller go disco. And now that day has come and "WE ARE MONSTER" is here.
The first time I listened to it was in the company of a friend who is another huge Isolée fan. At first she wouldn't believe me it was Isolée until after a few minutes she made the following remark - "Actually, you can tell it's Isolée by the way it goes all mad and wonky and shit". Quite!
So, yes it is a bit wonky and yes it is a bit different and yes it is a bit disco. Not disco in the conventional sense but some mutant 21st century hybrid of beautiful, melodious but disjointed melodies, space noises from another galaxy, strange basstones and percolating drum patterns. It also goes far further than just disco as while that music is designed specifically for the dancefloor, "WE ARE MONSTER" is making a fantabulous soundtrack to my movements around the city and my spacing out time at home too. Beautiful music from one of the greats. The wait was worth it.

The classics kid in me craves noble grandeur-- craft-happy shit with more than meets the rods and cones, less is always more (except with clothes), suggestive-seductive vs. the once-off gunfuck. Full-on body music's great, sure, but so is porno, and with that shit I'd much rather wax new flesh than drag my stylus off the same old 10-second loop. Same time, Intelligent Body Music's as much a nightmare as Intelligent Anal, both a prefab excuse for pleasure-lack. So we're stuck in this immediacy=better rut, when really the best stuff cross-genre-- cross-platform, cross-media-- has instant funk, but with enough tricks for prolonged appeal.

Liking We Are Monster is easy. Isolйe aren't bangers but they groove hard enough; melodies are pretty but most times we have to look for them (no lead vox or riff jihad per se). Tracks aren't afraid to be songs ("Face B"), and songs aren't afraid to be tracks ("Jelly Baby / Fish"). Everything's pleasant in other words, non-threatening like the cutesy-est Morr Music lullaby, but physical enough that you could get away with some great normal-person dancing. There are guitar sounds on a few tracks too, if that's important ("Today" sounds like "Do You Realize?"), and traceable horizontal A-->B trajectory in songs with klix movements and quantifiable progress. No need for all the "it's about size! it's about expansion!" apologies people make for their favorite loops.

As for loving this record-- letting it problematize itself with spins and learning to let it offend-- well, We Are Monster has the depth if you have the time. Yep, here's a fun record that's a work-for-it, in-the-details record, too. Behind the choked-vocals groove of, say, "Enrico" are countless micro-surprises (check how the kicks break down differently each turnaround, or how the downbeat finally drops deceptively mid-bar instead of on the loop's head), structured flips with chess-like anticipation (the guitar-like scratches function percussively at first, their color stuck in overtones until the song needs them in full), and avalanching momentum not from Isolйe stuffing ideas half-baked, but from letting the seeds of lines grow, branch out, and tangle. Not sure we can talk of "Golden Age IDM" or even "Golden Age Techno" yet, but something like the Copeland-does-Glam gem "Schrapnell" seems so effortless, breathes so carefree, years from now crits might accuse it of sounding timeless-- maybe even of being so.

The rest of the tracks have their own self-revealing logic, obeying the beat but never in dependency to it. Honestly, you could drop the drum sounds off "Madchen mit Hase" and the song would still kill a floor, the rhythms of its composite parts boasting good spine, serving the melody before decorating the dancefloor. No gesture's incidental; the simplest blip plays for both a greater purpose and its own passing punchline. Even the second-trackiest number, "Do Re Mi", fronts a perplexing guitar jingle so it can alley-oop with drones of the same progression and a goofy italo-disco melody of 180-degree mood change, then the polar-opposite timbre. These songs are well-poised and well-developed and terrifyingly autonomous-- so much so I'm afraid they're no longer Isolйe's anymore. On that note: Yeah, while I wish We Are Monster was an Album w/Overarching Concerns and Worldview, not just a Bunch Of Sweet Similar-Sounding Stand-Alone Tracks, I'm also convinced that in fact, a worldview is there, and probably an exciting one at that. I just haven't cracked one yet-- or just won't be able to.

Taj Mahal's been chasing the blues around the world for years, but rarely with the passion, energy, and clarity he brought to his first three albums. Taj Mahal, The Natch'l Blues and The Real Thing are the sound of the artist, who was born in 1942, defining himself and his music. On his self-titled 1967 debut, he not only honors the sound of the Delta masters with his driving National steel guitar and hard vocal shout, but ladles in elements of rock and country with the help of guitarists Ry Cooder and the late Jessie Ed Davis. This approach is reinforced and broadened by The Natch'l Blues. What's most striking is Mahal's way of making even the oldest themes sound as if they're part of a new era. Not just through the vigor of his playing--relentlessly propulsive, yet stripped down compared with the six-string ornamentations of the original masters of country blues--but through his singing, which possesses a knowing insouciance distinct to post-Woodstock counterculture hipsters. It's the voice of an informed young man who knows he's offering something deep to an equally hip and receptive audience.

Soon, Mahal turned his multicultural vision of the blues even further outward. The live 1971 set, The Real Thing, finds him still carrying the Mississippi torch, while adding overt elements of jazz and Afro-Caribbean music to its flame. But it's overreaching. His band sounds under-rehearsed, and the arrangements seem more like rough outlines. Nonetheless, these albums set the stage for Mahal's career. (For a condensed version, try the fine The Best of Taj Mahal.) Today, he continues to make fine fusion albums, like 1999's Kulanjan, with Malian kora master Toumani Diabate, and less exciting but still eclectic recordings with his Phantom Blues Band.

Less experimentally brash than his more recent release, Tricky's debut CD Maxinquaye is actually a better introduction to the British hip-hopper turned international trip-hopper than his later work. The dozen smoldering, moonlit tracks are less concerned with loopy aural exaggeration than they are with showcasing Tricky's slow-mo rap and singer Martine's sexy soprano. With the exception of the stellar "Pumpkin," (featuring vox from Alison Goldfrapp), the duo mix a colorful palate of rhythmic vocals, throbbing backbeats and gravelly electronic textures. Toss in large doses of sexual innuendo and Maxinquaye becomes a libidinous foray into languor and lust.

Van Morrison - Live at the Grand Opera House - Belfast (1985)[1998]

It is very difficult (if not totally pointless) to choose a 'favorite' Van Morrison cd. The sheer volume of recorded work precludes such a choice. Also, works of art (and much of Morrison's recorded work is art) often defy such catagorization. That being said, I find myself returning again and again to this disc. The instrumental arrangements for the most part are spare yet the vocals very lush creating a sort of low-key ecstasy (if such a thing can be imagined) quite unlike almost any other of Morrison's recordings. The pairing of Van's voice with the synthesizers and trumpet of Mark Isham is inspired. These versions of 'She Gives Me Religion' and 'Vanlose Stairway' are absolutely inspired providing a thrilling emotional resonance rare even for Van. I never tire of this disc and recomend it highly.

The Pogues - Rum, Sodomy & The Lash (1985)

Chávez Ravine was a Mexican neighborhood in Los Angeles that was demolished in the 1950's to make way for Dodger Stadium. And Ry Cooder's "Chávez Ravine" (Nonesuch) - a time-warped, kaleidoscopic, deep-grooved reimagining of a community arbitrarily destroyed - must be the first concept album about so-called urban renewal. But its seriousness never makes it earthbound. Mr. Cooder brings to it all he has learned from a career delving into odd corners of American and world music, including projects like "Buena Vista Social Club" and collaborations with musicians from Mali to Okinawa.

"Chávez Ravine" plunges into a remembered 1950's: a time of fear-mongering over Communists and U.F.O.'s, of hard-bop jazz and Latin dance crazes and burgeoning rock 'n' roll, of overweening city planners, casual racism and close-knit neighborhoods. The album mixes new songs and revived ones from the late 1940's and early 50's, in Spanish and English, and it's full of character studies, from Mexican hipsters circa 1949 to a bulldozer operator just doing his job.

Mr. Cooder's guests include an elder generation of Mexican-American musicians. But "Chávez Ravine" isn't a time-capsule album. Straightforward Mexican-American styles, like the accordion polka of "Ejercito Militar" ("Military Army"), and the bolero "Barrio Viejo" ("Old Neighborhood") - dramatically sung by the renowned Mexican songwriter Lalo Guerrero, who had hits in the 1950's - sit alongside the ethereal "El U.F.O. Cayó" ("The U.F.O. Fell"), sung by Juliette Commagere in a haze of synthetic tones, and "In My Town," a thoughtful ballad (with the jazz pianist Jacky Terrasson) that turns out to be narrated by a ruthless real-estate developer.

"Don't Call Me Red," about a public-housing visionary who was red-baited, merges a hazy bolero, briskly angular jazz and sound bites from "Dragnet"; "Muy Fifi" comes up with bluesy, 1950's-flavored rock akin to Los Lobos. The loping, syncopated twang of Mr. Cooder's guitar is all over the album.

While Mr. Cooder is sure who his heroes and villains are, he lets them all have their say. "Chávez Ravine" isn't a sanctimonious protest or an attempt at re-creation; it's a modern daydream about a place as vanished as Atlantis.

A rare solo outing from Ry Cooder, but don’t expect the conventional ‘twelve unrelated songs’ schtick that constitutes an album these days.
For "Chavez Ravine" is a concept album about the eponymous area near Los Angeles that was torn down in the 1950’s by developers to make way for the Dodgers Stadium.
The attraction of this neighbourhood for Cooder is obviously its largely Hispanic population, which is explicitly echoed in the music that tells the story.
Linking his past solo work with his famed Buena Vista Social Club projects, Cooder delivers his story amidst lazy Cuban percussion, rolling piano, mariachi horns and of course, his understated guitar playing.
Of course there are still surprises; the schizophrenia of "Don’t Call Me Red"; half ballad, half frenetic percussion and television narration being the biggest and best.
With a large cast of vocal talents, including the legendary Little Willie G of The Midniters, and Cooder’s own contributions (which end up sounding not unlike Steely Dan fronted by John Sebastian), the album as a whole is extremely effective and succeeds in every department, evoking the kind of atmosphere aimed for.

Ry Cooder might have been tempted to bill this as the Chavez Ravine Social Club. After generating such popular and critical interest in Cuban music of decades past with the Buena Vista Social Club, Cooder applied a similar approach closer to home, extending his fascination with the Mexican-American culture that flourished in 1940s and '50s Los Angeles. The result is an CD that sounds like it's aspiring to be something far more ambitious: a DVD, a theatrical production, even a time machine. Cooder and a cast of seminal Chicano artists present a song cycle that conjures an era of UFOs, the Red Scare, and political machinations that leveled the Chavez Ravine barrio to lure the Brooklyn Dodgers to Los Angeles. In his celebration of a vibrant community that doesn't know it's on the verge of displacement, Cooder enlists Thee Midnighters vocalist Little Willie G. (whose songwriting collaboration with Los Lobos's David Hidalgo on "Onda Callejara" highlights the album). and Pachuco patriarchs Don Tosti and Lalo Guerrero, with the latter reviving his dancefloor favorite "Los Chucos Suaves." The accordion of Flaco Jimenez adds conjunto flavor to "Barrio Viejo." Throughout the album, Cooder plays a typically tasteful, understatedly virtuosic guitar, assumes a variety of vocal roles--including a cool Chet Baker homage in duet with pianist Jacky Terrason on "In My Town"--and provides the provocative social context.
