Da li znate da su poganski Rimljani vjekovima prije Krista slavili 15. februar, a da se 14. februar odrzavao razbludni idolopoklonicki festival u cast Luperkusa, "lovca na vukove"? Rimljani su taj praznik zvali "Luperkalija". Isto tako, obicaj razmjenjivanja ljubavnih pisama i ostala tradicija u cast obozavanog junackog lovca iz Rima, Luperkusa, bili su u staro vrijeme povezani sa obicajima medu adolescentima da nasumice sklapaju "ozbiljne veze" u kojima je obicno dolazilo do intimnih odnosa. Smatra se da su "ozbiljne veze" moderna stvar, ali nije tako! One su samo obnova jednog starog obicaja "koji je prenijet iz rimskoga festivala Luperkalije u mjesecu veljaci, u kome su se imena mladih zena stavljala u kutiju, a potom bi bilo izvuceno ime one 'koju je htjela sreca'", priznaje se u odrednici "Dan Svetoga Valentina" u Enciklopediji Americana.

Kada je Konstantin ucinio krscanstvo sluzbenom religijom Rimskoga Carstva, crkveni krugovi su razmatrali eventualno ukidanje toga poganskoga obicaja. Rimljani nisu htjeli niti cuti za takvu mogucnost! Zato je sklopljen kompromis da praznik i dalje ostane, ali da se iz njega izbace prostacki i razbludni obredi.

Taj praznik nije postao "hriscanski obicaj" sve do dolaska pape Gelasija na vlast. Vec 496. godine ovaj papa mijenja dan odrzavanja Luperkalije i umjesto 15. februar uvodi promjenu, pa se taj praznik proslavlja na dan Svetoga Valentina, 14. februar (str. 172 u knjizi "Obicaji i praznici sirom svijeta", autorice Lavinie Dobler). Postavlja se pitanje kako je taj poganski festival dobio ime "Dan Svetoga Valentina" i zasto se u danasnje vrijeme mali golisavi Kupid (lik poganskih Rimljana) tako cesto povezuje sa 14. danom u veljaci? Zasto mladi ljudi i djeca isjecaju slike srca i salju ih jedni drugima na dan u kome se odaje pocast Luperkusu, lovcu na vukove? Kako smo dosli do pretpostavke da su ti poganski obicaji, koji se drze u cast jednoga laznoga boga - hriscanski?

Cinjenica je da se ovaj praznik na Zapadu zove Sveti Valentin

Saint Valentine or Saint Valentinus refers to one of at least three martyred saints of ancient Rome. The feast of Saint Valentine was formerly celebrated on February 14 by the Roman Catholic Church until the revised calendar 1969.

The feast of St. Valentine was first decreed in 496 by Pope Gelasius I, who included Valentine— and Saint George— among those "...whose names are justly reverenced among men, but whose acts are known only to God." The creation of the feast for such dimly conceived figures may have been an attempt to supersede the pagan holiday of Lupercalia that was still being celebrated in 5th century Rome, on February 15.

According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, the saint whose feast was celebrated on the day now known as St. Valentine's Day was possibly one of the three martyred men who lived in the late 3rd century during the reign of Emperor Claudius II (died 270):

a priest in Rome
a bishop of Interamna (modern Terni)
a martyr in the Roman province of Africa.
It's believed that the priest and the bishop Valentinus are each buried along the Via Flaminia outside Rome, at different lengths from the city. In the 12th century, the Roman city gate known in ancient times as the Porta Flaminia (now known as the Porta del Popolo) was known as the Gate of St. Valentine.

As Gelasius implied, nothing is known about the lives of any of these martyrs, however. Many of the current legends surrounding them were invented in the late Middle Ages in France and England, when the feast day of February 14 became associated with romantic love. No such sentiment appears in the Golden Legend of Jacobus de Voragine, compiled about 1260 and one of the most-read books of the High Middle Ages. The Legenda Aurea gives sufficient details of the saints and for each day of the liturgical year to inspire a homily on the occasion. The very brief vita of St Valentine, has him refusing to deny Christ before the "Emperor Claudius" in the year 280. Before his head was struck off, this Valentine restored sight and hearing to the daughter of his jailer. Jacobus makes a play with the etymology of "Valentine," "as containing valour", but there is nothing of hearts and last notes signed "from your Valentine," as is sometimes suggested in modern works of sentimental piety [1].

The historical 2nd-century bishop Valentinus (died ca 153) is not venerated on any day of the Roman Catholic calendar, for his teachings were declared heretical and his works suppressed. Valentinus or Valentinius was the best known and for a time the most successful Christian Gnostic theologian, and a charismatic though divisive figure. Bands of his followers could still be found in the 5th century, when a more acceptable Valentinus was recollected and canonized.

In 1836, relics that were exhumed from the catacombs of Saint Hippolytus on the Via Tiburtina near Rome, were identified with St Valentine, placed in a golden casket and transported to the Whitefriar Street Carmelite Church in Dublin, Ireland, to which they were donated by Pope Gregory XVI. Many tourists visit the saintly remains on St. Valentine's Day, when the casket is carried in solemn procession to the high altar for a special Mass dedicated to young people and all those in love. Alleged bodily relics of St Valentine also lie at the reliquary of Roquemaure in France and in the Stephansdom in Vienna..

The saint's feast day was removed from the Church calendar in 1969 as part of a broader effort to remove saints of purely legendary origin. The feast day is still celebrated locally in some parishes.

History of Valentine's Day

February fertility festivals
The association of the middle of February with love and fertility dates to ancient times. In the calendar of Ancient Athens, the period between mid January and mid February was the month of Gamelion, which was dedicated to the sacred marriage of Zeus and Hera.
In Ancient Rome, the day of February 15 was Lupercalia, the festival of Lupercus, the god of fertility, who was represented as half-naked and dressed in goat skins. As part of the purification ritual, the priests of Lupercus would sacrifice goats to the god, and after drinking wine, they would run through the streets of Rome holding pieces of the goat skin above their heads, touching anyone they met. Young women especially would come forth voluntarily for the occasion, in the belief that being so touched would render them fruitful and bring easy childbirth.

Medieval era

The first recorded association of St. Valentine's Day with romantic love was in the 14th century in England and France, where February 14 was traditionally the day on which birds paired off to mate. This belief is mentioned in Geoffrey Chaucer's Parlement of Foules (1381). It was common during that era for lovers to exchange notes on this day and to call each other their "Valentines". A 14th century valentine is said to be in the collection of the British Library. It is probable that many of the legends about St. Valentine were invented during this period.

Valentinius
The influential Gnostic teacher Valentinius was a candidate for Bishop of Rome in 143. In his teachings, the marriage bed assumed a central place in his version of Christian love, an emphasis sharply in contrast with the asceticism of mainstream Christianity. Stephan A. Hoeller assesses Valentinius on the subject : "In addition to baptism, anointing, eucharist, the initiation of priests and the rites of the dying, the Valentinian Gnosis mentions prominently two great and mysterious sacraments called "redemption" (apolytrosis) and "bridal chamber" respectively" [1].

Ako ces slaviti Valentinovo i Djeda Mraza ja nemam problema s tim ali znaj odakle oba praznika poticu.

ma da je Deda Mraz milion puta sveti Nikola meni je to super koncept, stari dedo u crvenom odjelu, koji raznosi djeci poklone na kraju godine to bi znaci trebala slaviti samo djeca hriscana??? istorijska pozadina je jedno...nacin na koji su se odredjeni praznici kulturoloski integrisali u modernom svijetu je nesto sasvim drugo...

eh da vidis Istanbul kako bude okicen za Novu godinu, nema to ama bas nikakve veze ni sa jednom religijom
