From record label:
'The fourth release by Serbian group Earth Wheel Sky Band, titled Gipsy Tango, finds the band a step further on their music ladder. The band’s first two releases saw the band working both with contemporary and traditional arrangements, while keeping the integrity of music from the region they come from whereas the third one “ 21st Century”, was a collection of side works and collaborative projects that band leader Oláh Vince undertook with the band or without.

Gipsy Tango finds the band merging gipsy music both from the north of Serbia, which is more under the influence of Hungarian folk music and brass instruments and uneven rhythms from the south. EWS-band draws with ease from a myriad of other forms such as flamenco, reggae, soul and each song draws you to its heart, and keeps you there. This is not the first time that the band does amalgamation of different traditions as on the previous records it was done with brilliant results on tracks such as “Chochec” (from Rroma Art) and Only a Man (from Waltz Rromano).
The band’s playing is the first thing that will strike you as you start to listen to it. The EWS-band plays this music with exuberance and each musician plays with a buoyant, infectious energy. Especially arrangement wise it flows easily and is well balanced. The music ranges from soulful ballads such as the achingly beautiful “Gospel” or the dreamy “Free7/8” to folkish up tempo tracks such as “Crayngtime” and “Scheherezeda”.

The album opens with Gipsy Tango and is soon followed by Rumba Janika, an upbeat track with a killer violin, swinging trumpet and wonderful rhythms. Other highlights include “ApsolutRromantic” and “Tikno Luludi”.

The approach the band took on this record could perhaps be characterized as ethnic jazz but with roots and fronds of the tradition that make them irresistible. This is indispensable stuff from giants of gypsy music, and highly recommended.'
Nenad Georgijevski.

'Earth - Wheel - Sky is one of the first projects of the Roma musicians in Vojvodina. The band was founded in 1981. Having in mind the experience of jazz, rock and Roma folk music, the leader of the group Vince Olah wanted to give his contribution to the music of the Roma people, as one of the strong points in the fight for Roma emancipation.

Boris Kovač on EWSB:
I proudly present to you one of the best Romany ensembles in the Balkans. Olah Vince and his Earth – Wheel - Sky Band are legitimate representatives of the new urban cultural Romany scene, which presents its own musical and cultural heritage through world music. After publishing two albums for foreign labels, taking part in the most eminent ethno and jazz festivals, and after their European and World tour within which they visited France, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Holland, Japan, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Croatia, the time has come for the audience in our country to get to know their discography. To start with, it is enough to say that Mr. Olah has dedicated his entire life to the struggle for his people’s cultural, social, and political rights. The “modern” people would say that the man is an expert but. I like more to think of him as Romany Bob Marley or to compare him to Manu Chao. Time will tell best to what extent he succeeded in that. The music on this compact disc bears only one message. The time has come for you to learn about the other side of the story about Romanies. From themselves.
The promotion and (ab)use of the Roman culture has becomea major trend in the world in the last few years. The irony of the historic moment has proven itself explicit this way: the people that represent the symbol of a-historic principle have come into focus of attention at the exact time when the unstoppable historic (technological/economic) progress got out of hand. You can draw conclusion yourself... Vince Olah, the living legend of the Novi Sad music scene, has dedicated his whole life to the cultural, social and political emancipation of the Romany people. The project RROMA ART is an attempt to find a unique matrix in the vast range of Romany music which will make its creators, who have been discriminated and spread all over the world, awere of their Romany identity. Trust your heart, at least for a moment, for we are all Romany at heart...

B92 o albumu XXI vek

Gypsy Shana Ba predstavlja neku vrstu, skoro neo-klasičnog, intermeca u kojoj će vas violina dovesti do suza.

Ploču konceptualno zatvara potresna i refleksivna Where Is My Soul (obrada tradicionala Gde si dušo, gde si rano), ali pravi kraj dolazi sa temom Politika, Olahovim oštrim i duhovitim komentarom na prilike u Srbiji. Earth-Wheel-Sky Band i Olah Vince to najbolje znaju.

The second CD, Waltz Romano, is truly an “on-the road” record, and this time it carries images of songs and music being played while travelling either on foot, by train or by sea as various sounds regarding the travels of these nomadic people have been added. In between songs one would hear sounds of water or sounds of trains. Although in reality the road taken is never that joyfull and merry, Earth Wheel Sky seem to have fun while doing that. The band plays with vibrant energy and along the way they are picking up all those influences and characteristics from regions starting from India up to Spain. It seems that fun never ends and it goes on and on.

“Azija Rromansa” opens with sounds from a pub and one can hear the sounds of glass and people talking, when a violin slowly makes its way through the crowd and then the band suddenly bursts into a dynamic performance. It features complex rhythms, intricate flamenco guitar soloings and in the background one can hear middle eastern melodies. The same combination and flavors are carried on to the next track “Sa e Rroma, Ando Them” (All the people in the world). “Me Sem Rrom” (Only a Man) is a vibrant tune with a brilliant C&W violin solo as well as fantastic cymbalo crashes. The world of Earth Sky Wheel Band is not as simple as some may think. Some melodies may seem familiar and the combination of that with heavyweight performances offers something special to the listener. “Music Rroman” is a flamenco tinged tune with strenght and sadness typical for flamenco music. It undoubtedly has, what people might say, a duende. “India Rroma” is a funky tune with a sitar playing different funky melodies unlike the traditional stuff we usually assosiate the sitar with.

Even though one can feel so many influences and tinges the band has managed to maintain the integrity of the music from their own region. With the explosion of the popularity of this type of music there was also an increase of misconceptions and sacriledge of their heritage. These days the music stores are flooded with CDs with gypsy music. Although the cover sleeves and the packaging are excellent, the quality of the music inside has proven to be poor. Not everything that shines is gold. In this case both releases have excellent cover sleeves and even better music.

Passion: Music For The Last Temptation Of Christ
To call Peter Gabriel's Passion a pivotal recording in the development of the world music genre would be a significant understatement. What makes Passion so undeniably huge is, of course, its global reach but also its expert handling of what could've easily become polyglot babble. Vocalists Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Youssou N'Dour, and Baaba Mal bring strong Middle Eastern and African voicing to the project, and Balkan textures come via the ney flute and doudouk. But Gabriel is the glue, offering electronic ambient flows between the multiple streams. Gabriel also brings something even less tangible: an awesome visual imagination that takes often seamless sounds and makes them impress the listener with picturelike colors and phrasing. This is, however, far more than an ambient global mix. To be certain, the intertwined rhythms stand out but always do so both unto themselves and as brushstrokes on a larger canvas. Never mind that Passion helped launch North American careers for N'Dour and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, this is a stellar musical achievement by any standard.

Each year in Fes, Morocco, some of the world's most extraodinary music rises above the city's ancient medina. This is the site of the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music: a one of-a-kind celebration of the divine in music, song, and dance. Nowhere else is the confluence of music and the sacred more joyfully and reverently celebrated than in these highlights from the second Fes Festival. B'ismillah (in the name of God) is alive with passion, inspiration, and musical realization that transcend national and religious boundaries. In these devotional songs we discover what the sufis have always known: that music in nothing less than an echo of God.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s in Mexico, singer Chavela Vargas dressed in men’s clothes, drank and smoked cigars like any man, carried a gun with her, and was notorious for her love of women. Some even say that she once kidnapped a woman at gunpoint, but Vargas denies that rumor. However, she doesn’t deny that she gained her slight limp from jumping out of a window because a woman disappointed her in love. If that’s true, Vargas in her youth was every bit as romantic as the music she sang.
A legend in Mexican ranchera music—traditional folk music filled with lusty songs about women and romance and heartbreak—Vargas publicly came out as a lesbian in 2000 at the age of 81, the same year she was awarded Spain’s Great Cross of Isabel la Católica, the country’s highest honor for artistic production.
Speaking to Madrid’s El País newspaper in October 2000, Vargas declared, “I’ve had to fight to be myself and to be respected. I'm proud to carry this stigma and call myself a lesbian. I don't boast about it or broadcast it, but I don't deny it. I've had to confront society and the Church, which says that homosexuals are damned. That's absurd. How can someone who's born like this be judged? I didn't attend lesbian classes. No one taught me to be this way. I was born this way, from the moment I opened my eyes in this world. I've never been to bed with a man. Never. That's how pure I am; I have nothing to be ashamed of. My gods made me the way I am.”

Biography by John Bush
The best and longest preserved of the Mexican cancion ranchera singers, Chavela Vargas began singing rather late in life — past the age of thirty — but continued well into old age, charming audiences until she was well into her 70s. Born in Costa Rica in 1919, she first sang on a professional level in the early '50s, and toured with the legendary José Alfredo Jiménez. Her first recordings appeared in 1961, and she became quite popular during the 1960s and '70s, both in her native land as well as across the ocean in Spain and Europe. Although she retired in 1979, a victim of alcoholism, Vargas returned in 1990 after accepting a role in the Werner Herzog film A Cry of Stone. One year later, she contributed a song to the soundtrack of Tacones Lejanos, and in 1993 she entered a recording studio for the first time in decades.
